Faye Rene Clark - May 04, 1936 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Faye Rene Clark, born May 4 th , 1936 in El Paso Arkansas to Oliver Edward Modlin and Mary Estella (Ramsey) Modlin, passed away on Monday night, January 1, 2024. She will be forever remembered as a beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and friend who never passed up an opportunity to snuggle a baby or offer a warm hug—a woman who laughed, shared, and loved with such sunshine-fierce intensity that the warmth and wisdom of her kindness will continue to inspire generations to come. While Faye was blessed to travel to such exciting places as Hawaii and Israel during her lifetime, she was most known for her dedicated service to local community and family, where, in addition to her many talents as a grandma- extraordinaire, she worked, volunteered, and provided caregiving services in various capacities throughout the Monroe-Pella-Newton area. If someone needed a little TLC, Faye was always willing to lend a hand. Her infectious smile and gentle ways brought happiness wherever she Went.
After marrying Seth Blake Clark on October 16, 1954, Faye spent much of her early adult life raising six children and helping her family run their farm in Monroe, Iowa. Later, while working outside the home and watching her family continue to grow, Faye always managed to make time to be a dedicated sister and friend to her many siblings, to fulfill her role as a most-adored grandma and great grandma to her many grandchildren, and to be ready to help whenever possible and in whatever capacity was most helpful—whether that be in the garden, taking a long walk, or providing a sympathetic ear. Of course, all who really knew Faye knew that her most treasured role was in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whether that involved rolling up to cheer at a game or meet, jumping into a friendly competition between the kids, or simply cuddling her newest great-grandbaby with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen. She will be deeply missed.
Faye is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Seth Clark, two sons, Park Eldon Clark and Wayland Seth Clark, her sister Loy Bell (Goodsell) Stines, her brothers, Vernon, Hoy, Oliver “Junior,” Lois Dale “L.D.”, several siblings-in-law, two sons-in-law, and a grandson. Survivors include her children, Randy (Judy) Clark of Monroe, Candy (Terry) Amyx of Wisconsin, Cindy (Vince) Vincentz of Florida, and Julie Olson of Grinnell. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren with one more on the way.
It has been said that the legacy of a life well lived is a tribute to all, and it is with the most profound and deepest gratitude that her family and friends will honor Faye’s many gifts during a memorial service at United Methodist Church in Monroe, Iowa on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 12:00 pm. The family will greet friends following the service at the church and a lunch will be served. She will then rest in eternal peace with her beloved family in the Dunreath Cemetery in Monroe, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the PCM Athletic Boosters www.pcmathleticbooster@gmail.com) and condolences may be left for family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

Bill was the middle child born to Rufus and Ellen (Leonard) Elliott on July 19, 1936 in Aledo, Illinois. Bill lived on the farm most of his life. He graduated from Reynolds High School in 1954. After graduating he continued to work on the farm. During his single days, he and some buddies would go to dances. It was there he met the love of his life, Mary Jansen from Missouri. Bill started talking to Mary and a friendship and love began to develop. Bill would go to Davenport where Mary lived with her sisters, just to visit her. They went to many dances and would dance the night away. One of their favorites to dance to was Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood”. They would unite in marriage on June 20, 1959.
Three months and three days later (September 1959) Bill was called to duty by the Army draft to Korea. He first went to Fort Riley in Kansas, Fort Carson in Colorado, Fort Benning in Georgia then onto Korea. There in Korea he was 1st Cavalry Division 8th Cavalry Battle Group.
Even though he was proud of his service and proud of his country he could not wait to get home to his bride. He returned home to the Reynolds, Buffalo Prairie area. Bill worked hard on the farm tending to his hogs, cattle, corn, beans and later tomatoes. Bill and Mary continued to go dancing when they could. Bill was a fun loving guy. He enjoyed doing stunts in Glenn Cook’s Rockridge Follies for many years. He was in the “Black Bart Gang” and part of “Elvis’s” crew. In addition to his ‘gang’ life he was also a belly-button whistler and he even pretended he had a right false leg. He would spend most of those Follies nights on roller skates too. Bill retired from farming when they sold the farm ground in 2008. He then went to work for Dave Martin at Martin Grain, then later Big River. Where he would haul crops for farmers until they moved to Pella, Iowa in 2020.
Along with farming he enjoyed going camping, hunting, traveling, snowmobiling, flying, going to sporting events, helping Kris with her show calves and pulling jokes on people. During one hunting season, he was part of a hanging deer theft. During fair time, he would be right in the middle of the water fights at the fair. That’s if he wasn’t at the ‘board meeting’ in the camper. He was a member at the time of the Buffalo Prairie Presbyterian Church, Kaaba Shriners, Buffalo Prairie Masonic Lodge #679, American Legion Post 1166 Reynolds.
He was currently living in Altoona, Iowa with his wife of 64 years Mary. Bill and Mary moved from Reynolds, IL to Pella Iowa to be closer to their daughter, Kris and her husband Judd in July of 2020. Bill and Mary recently moved to Altoona in April. While in Iowa, Bill enjoyed giving advice and talking farming with whomever would listen. He would help Judd and Kris on the farm when he was able, by using HIS little John Deere tractor to mow the pasture. He did get a chance to go to the hunting shed a couple of times with Judd and would tell stories of his hunts. He also attended some high school softball games to watch Judd and Kris’ niece play.

Reva Margaret McConeghey - November 21, 1929 - June 15, 2023

Departed: 06/15/2023 (Monroe)
Obituary Preview: Reva Margaret (Marshall) McConeghey, age 93, was welcomed into her eternal heavenly home on June 15, 2023. She was born east of Monroe to Roy and Olive (Woody) Marshall on November 21, 1929 joining older sisters Doris & Evelyn. She grew up in the depression so there was not many store-bought niceties or frills, but the family had musical talent and enjoyed playing instruments together and for local dances; father playing fiddle and mandolin, sister Evelyn playing guitar and other instruments, and Reva chording on the piano. Reva attended Cottage Grove school five miles east of Monroe through 8th grade. She was honored to be the Jasper County Queen in 1946 at the centennial celebration and was chosen for this honor by comedian and actor Bob Hope. Reva at age 18 married Dale, her beloved husband, at Tool’s Chapel Church east of Monroe and were the 1st couple married in the church in 1948. They farmed on Dale’s home place for ten years and then moved to a 40-acre farm close by. These years were full of love and arduous work and their family soon included four children, Gary Dale, Elaine Ruth, Alan Roy & Sheryl Lynn. Reva was a hard-working farm wife; choring, milking cows, selling eggs, raising and butchering chickens, and maintaining a huge garden & orchard, with the subsequent canning, freezing, and cooking of the produce. Life in the summer centered around what vegetable or fruit was ripe and getting it “put up” and safely in the cave for winter use. Reva could cook up a storm and many people enjoyed eating meals at her home especially in the summer when the food was fresh (hours old) from picking. Homemade ice cream was a staple every summer with batches made for birthdays and shared with everyone who visited. Coffeetime with freshly baked treats enjoyed with family and friends was a revered custom. Reva was a life-long learner, earning her GED in 1968 and reading constantly, even enjoying reading encyclopedias for fun! Her walk with her personal Savior Jesus Christ was nurtured and a lifelong pursuit, with her being a life-long member of Tool’s Chapel Church and then when it closed joining the Monroe Methodist Church and singing in the choir there many years. When the children were older, Reva contributed to the family fund by wallpapering/painting, shucking corn at PAG, waitressing at the Dairy Sweet, and working at the post office for 15 years. Reva and husband Dale enjoyed card playing dates with neighbors, Dale & Dorothy Mullins, Lloyd & Catherine Nolin, and Zeke & Phyllis Machin. Many hours were enjoyed playing 500, Farkle, Pitch, and Canasta. Reva commented “life was not as much fun” after husband Dale died in 2010. She continued living alone in Monroe for 5 years, then moved to an apartment in Pella, and then assisted living. In November 2021, Reva fell and broke her hip and was cared for competently and skillfully by Valley View Village staff in Des Moines until her death. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends, family, and acquaintances of the funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details. You may also include hobbies, achievements, and personal characteristics that made the person unique.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the essential details such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still want to add or modify content after your passing.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's published on a website or social media platform, making it easily accessible to a wider audience. Online obituaries often include features like guest books, condolence messages, and photo galleries.

How long do online obituaries stay posted?

The duration for which an online obituary remains posted varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them up indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been posted?

In most cases, yes. You can contact the online platform or funeral home where the obituary was posted to request changes or corrections.

What is a memorial website?

A memorial website is an online space dedicated to honoring and celebrating the life of a deceased person. It often includes features like photo galleries, video tributes, condolence messages, and stories about the person's life.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to archived newspapers or other resources that can help you find an old obituary.

Can I reuse an existing obituary for another purpose?

If you're considering reusing an existing obituary for another purpose (e.g., creating a memorial website or printing it in a program for a memorial service), be sure to obtain permission from the original author or publisher first.

What is the etiquette for responding to an online condolence message?

A simple thank you or acknowledgement is sufficient when responding to online condolence messages. You can also respond with a brief message expressing your appreciation for their support during this difficult time.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include this option in the obituary as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a cause that was important to them.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was posted as soon as possible to report any errors or inaccuracies. They will work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised version.

Can I create an obituary for someone who has passed away recently but didn't have any immediate family?

Yes! Friends, caregivers, or other individuals close to the deceased can write and publish an obituary as a way to honor their memory and provide closure for those who knew them.

What is the significance of publishing an obituary in multiple languages?

Publishing an obituary in multiple languages can help reach a broader audience and ensure that all those who cared about the deceased are informed about their passing.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber; including humor or heartwarming stories can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

Beyond just announcing their passing, focus on sharing stories about their life, accomplishments, and values that made them unique. This will help keep their memory alive for years to come.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms can be a powerful tool for sharing an obituary with a wider audience. You can post it on your personal profile or create a dedicated page for condolences and memories.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary serves as a way to acknowledge and validate our emotions during the grieving process. It provides an opportunity for us to celebrate our loved one's life and begin processing our loss.
