The son of Raymond and Vinette (Hubbell) Parvi, Pete was born on August 4, 1940, in Becker County, Minnesota, near Menahga, and grew up there and later near Nashwauk in the Iron Range country. Being one-half Finn (his paternal grandparents both came from Finland), Pete demonstrated the stoicism, deep-but-not-often-shown emotions, and enjoyment of coffee at any time of day that Finns are known for, along with taking a sauna (Finnish pronunciation 'sowna') in the separate bathhouse at the family home in Nashwauk, with stones fired by birchwood in a woodburning stove. Pete was an amateur boxer in high school and junior college, and competed in the Golden Gloves tournaments in Minnesota and Des Moines with his brother, Vern. He attended Itasca Junior College after graduation from Nashwauk High School, where he also ran track, and obtained a degree in forestry. He proudly served in the United States Army, discharged just at the beginning of the Vietnam War after serving on Machinery Logistics, helping to keep machinery and tanks and trucks running in constructing an airport there. On February 19, 1966, he was united in marriage to Delores Ann Casteel in Massena, Iowa. After living in Des Moines for a year, they purchased a home in Colfax where they've resided since. Pete worked at Kenworth Trucking Company in Des Moines from 1966-2007 as a Parts Manager, and after retiring, continued to work part-time for several years there. Pete was an avid bike rider, participating often in the BRR ride, the Des Moines Mayor's Ride, and parts of Ragbrai with his son Steve. Their riding adventures went far beyond civilized rides, however, and also included mountain bike riding on Sycamore Trail in Des Moines, Sugar Bottom Trail near Solon, and others, and sometimes included crashes, scrapes, and broken bones. Pete also served his community for several years, with his love of the outdoors and love of trails coming together in his work at Quarry Springs Park. The legacy he has created there through his acts of love through work and service will memorialize him in a way he would be proud of as a humble man who did not like attention drawn to himself. Pete also loved his grandchildren very much and enjoyed attending their many activities over the years. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Delores; three children, Brenda (Kevin) Yoakum, Wade Parvi, and Steve Parvi; three grandchildren, Madison, Jamie, and Kale; a sister, Sarah (Nick) Wedge, and several nieces and nephews. He then went to infantry training and was interviewed and selected for the prestigious honor of joining the Presidential Honor Guard in Arlington, Virginia. Red loved being in the military and enjoyed telling stories about his time in the honor guard where he participated in multiple military burials on a daily basis. Red was on the firing squad and part of ceremonial burials every half hour at Arlington National Cemetery. Red was a featured Clogger on Eastern Seaboard television sharing the stage with Patsy Cline and Jimmy Dean. Red enjoyed visiting with Patsy backstage and has been a lifelong fan.In 1957 Red completed his service to our country and returned to Colfax where he met and fell in love with the accordion player at his coming home party. Judy Kay Sage was married to Red Atwood in June of 1958. The couple made their home in Colfax and welcomed 3 children over the next 6 years. Regina, Jodi and Scott. Red was a great dad and loved teaching his children how to fish, play sports and cards and always gave them great advice.Red was engaged in farming and in 1966 was recruited by a local Pioneer seed corn salesman to help him grow the business. Red had a big personality and didn't know a stranger. It was the perfect fit for his gregarious personality. He then established Atwood Sales and Service, seeds of all kinds and became one of the top seed salesmen for Pioneer in the state of Iowa. He later became a Sunday School teacher and UMYF leader. Many Iowans know Red as the founder and owner of Trainland USA, the 2nd largest model railroad in the country. To say that Red loved trains, would be an understatement. His first layout started in the family basement but after seeing a large layout in Spirit Lake Iowa, Red had the dream of building something much bigger that would be open to the public and would bring joy to those from 1 to 101. In 1976, Red built a new home with the entire lower level to become Trainland USA. He then recruited 32 of his friends and neighbors to spend their winter nights in the basement building his dream. It took 32 people 4 ½ years to complete the project. It opened to the public in June of 1981 and more than 500 people showed up to witness Red's dream. Trainland USA was featured on ABC nightly news along with dozens of other TV networks, local stations and Newspapers. Peter Jennings, George McGovern and John Chancellor were just a few of the well know names that visited the museum. In 1993, Red lost his beloved wife Judy to cancer and in 1996 Red married another Judy, Judy Smith from Newton. Judy fortunately quickly became interested in the train business and helped run Trainland until the time of his passing. In addition to his well-known love of trains, Red also kept busy in the winter playing Santa. For over 50 years Red would put on the red suit and white beard and deliver gifts to many children. He eventually teamed up with the Colfax Kiwanis Club and delivered gifts to those less fortunate. Red loved kids and loved playing Santa. Many kids in the area still believe he was the REAL Santa.Red had a passion for nature and the great outdoors and loved fishing and hunting. Danny Keuning - November 12, 1951 - March 30, 2022

Departed: 03/30/2022 (Colfax)
Obituary Preview: Danny Eugene Keuning, age 70, lifelong resident of Percy and southern Prairie City, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at his home on his farm in his favorite recliner. Dan was born at home on a farm south of Percy. Dan grew up, lived and farmed in this area his entire life. He started school at the Pleasant Hill County School south of Prairie City and graduated from Prairie City High School in 1970. Following graduation Dan worked at Dowden Manufacturing and Rinehart Construction. Later he began a career in farming, something he loved to do with his dad. Dan married Denise Gilbert on November 22, 1975 at the Christian Church in Prairie City. They began their marriage living on the farm in the Percy-Pleasant Hill area where Dan and Denise raised their family. While farming Dan also worked part time for Grandia Locker, Kuyper Music, Rietveld Locker, and Wanders Farms Locker. Dan loved his profession of farming and was an excellent caretaker of the lands that he farmed. An example was that upon retirement, he felt strongly about providing land and opportunities to young farmers who were just venturing into their new career. He also deeply cared about all of the residents in the entire Pleasant Hill area. Dan was widely known to "patrol" the gravel in this area, sometimes traveling his route multiple times per day, checking on neighbors and wildlife. He loved his neighborhood and the beauty of the area. If someone wanted to know where the mushrooms could be found, Dan was the person to follow. He was also an expert on where the fish were biting and willingly provided ample advice on how to catch them. Dan also knew precise locations of where the big bucks and wildlife were hanging out. Dan's love for annual Deer Hunting week were prioritized days on his calendar each year. He looked forward to hunting with his brothers, son, family and friends. He was known for his innocent harassment of the Game Wardens and Federal employees. And of course, Dan always had the information on the location of the next card game in the area. Dan was famous in the area for his ability in playing Cut Throat Pitch. He had a reputation of staying at the annual Percy Pitch Tournament playing cards until the door was locked for the night.Dan enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada and to North Dakota where he enjoyed "showing everyone how to catch the big ones" and cooking up some great meals for the other travelers. Trips to the West with his family and trips to Hawaii, Branson and Las Vegas were all enjoyed by Dan and Denise. In life, Dan and Denise shared everything. Time together with their friends and family was a high priority for him. His loved ones and neighbors knew that if they needed anything, Dan would be there for them or would provide what was needed. Likewise, Dan never knew a stranger. He always made people feel included, valued, and cared for. Dan was very active in the Percy Fair, spending time in the preparation of the grounds and then enjoying visiting with old friends and neighbors on the fun day. Dan is survived by his beloved wife Denise of 46 years, a son Ryan Keuning and daughter in-law Kelly of Prairie City, and daughter Lisa, and son-in-law Bill Beougher of Monroe. Dan will be greatly missed by his special granddaughter, Ila Keuning, and his grandson, Jack Beougher. His kids and grandkids brought him so much joy. An example was his love to watch Ila's involvement in softball and other activities. He was very proud. Dan is also survived by three brothers, Don and his wife Elaine of Monroe, Max and his wife Patty of Prairie City, and Mark and his wife Jean of Prairie City; along with several special nieces and nephews and their families who loved him very much. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Coleen Keuning. Dan was a member of the Pleasant Hill Community Club, Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, and the Prairie City Odd Fellows. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 10:30 am at the Prairie City United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Monday, April 4, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. The Family has asked for memorials to be given to the Pleasant Hill Community Club (Percy Fair) or to the family for a Memorial to be decided on at a later date.
