An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

What is included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or professional writers. Funeral homes and online obituary platforms often provide templates and guidance to help individuals write an obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and focus on the most important information about the person's life. Aim for 100-200 words for a standard obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write an obituary before someone passes away?

Yes, it's not uncommon for people to prepare their own obituary in advance or for family members to write one for a loved one who is terminally ill. This can help alleviate some of the burden during a difficult time.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper, online platform, or other medium. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submitting it for publication.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report the error. They will work with you to correct it as soon as possible.

How long do online obituaries stay available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived or removed after a certain period.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just ensure they are relevant and respectful.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

You can still publish an obituary without including funeral service details. Simply omit this information or indicate that services are private.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes, even if someone passed away years ago, you can still write and publish an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives, visit local libraries or genealogical societies, or contact newspapers directly to access old obituaries. Some websites also specialize in archiving historical obituaries.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to suggest memorial donations to a specific charity or organization in lieu of flowers. This can be included in the obituary text.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the person's life or death, it's best to exercise discretion when writing the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on negative aspects.

Can I write multiple obituaries for different publications?

Yes, you may want to tailor separate obituaries for different audiences or publications. For example, a longer, more detailed obituary might be suitable for a local newspaper, while a shorter version might be better suited for social media or online platforms.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

Drafting an outline can help you organize your thoughts and ensure you cover all the essential information. You can also seek guidance from funeral home staff, online resources, or professional writers if needed.

How do I preserve an original copy of the obituary?

You can save a digital copy of the published obituary or request a printed copy from the newspaper or funeral home. Consider laminating or framing it as a keepsake.

Can I republish an existing obituary at a later date?

This depends on copyright laws and publication policies. Check with the original publisher before republishing an existing obituary elsewhere.
