Ludmila Komeck Sabatiuk - August 23, 1928 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Buckhannon)
Obituary Preview: Ludmila Komeck Sabatiuk, 95, passed away in Elkins, West Virginia, on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
Ludmila, known to family and friends as "Em", was born on a farm in Montville, Connecticut on August 23, 1928, the youngest of five children. She attended a two-room elementary school from first through eighth grade. She often said that her family survived the Great Depression only because they had a farm and were able to produce enough food to feed the family. Em learned to value family and hard work early on. She lived her life accordingly. Her passion was education, for herself and for others. She went to high school at Norwich Free Academy where she earned a scholarship to Connecticut College. This began her relentless pursuit of higher education that included a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Central Connecticut State College, a Masters in Remedial Reading from Columbia University, and a Masters in Library Science from Rutgers University. She enjoyed a lengthy career as a public-school teacher and librarian, treasuring the kids she taught and her co-workers, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Em met Andrew Sabatiuk when he came to her family’s farm to borrow a cabbage shredder. They were happily married for 54 years and raised three children. They loved to throw the kids in the back of the station wagon and take road trips to visit family, or to national parks, the western U.S., Florida, and many other destinations. They would get together with Em’s sisters and brother and their families for every major holiday, no matter the distance. Andy was an aeronautical engineer whose specialization in jet engine development required multiple family moves over the years, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Ohio. In each location, Em adjusted her career, made sure her kids went to good schools, and forged close friendships. After a move to New Jersey when the kids were pre-school age, Em was unable to find day care. She started a day care in her home with the help of a few friends. This grew until it moved into a separate dedicated facility with a teacher. She also tutored children in reading at her home.
Retirement initially took Em and Andy to Miami Beach, but Em found it was too far from the kids and grandkids, so they moved back up north to Maryland. Andy died in 2002, so Em moved in with daughter Kappy and her husband Bruce, first in Maryland, then Rock Cave, West Virginia. In both locations, Kappy and Bruce generously constructed a small house for Em adjoining their main house. Em also spent numerous winters in St. Augustine, Florida near her daughter Lynne and husband Rob. In 2021, Em moved to Mountain Memories, a retirement home in Elkins, West Virginia.
Em lived a happy, full life. She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren as they grew up, and more recently her great grandchildren. She loved travel, reading, movies, opera, politics, birdwatching, and visiting with friends and family. She was a generous donor to many causes, and a longtime member of the Ethical Culture Society.
