What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the death, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life and be able to provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or other requests.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the wishes of the family. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words. It's best to check with the publication or funeral home for specific guidelines on length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can ensure that your life is remembered in the way you want it to be. However, it's often left up to family members or friends to write the obituary after someone has passed away.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
