Mary "Susie" Parks - August 06, 1935 - January 06, 2023

Departed: 01/06/2023 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: In the evening of January 6, 2023 Mary Dobbins Parks, 87, died peacefully at Mission Hospital-Asheville after a brief illness. Born August 6, 1935 in Rutherford County North Carolina, she was the daughter of Rupert and Louise Dobbins. At the time of her birth, her brother John called her "Susie" after a doll and the name stuck with her for the rest of her life. Susie grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and graduated from East Mecklenburg High School. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone where she obtained her degree in English education.
Susie began her teaching career in 1958 in Charlotte. After taking several years off to care for her babies, in 1964 she embarked on a long and happy journey teaching for the McDowell County Schools. Known to many, many folks in McDowell as Mrs. Parks, she taught at Marion Elementary School for one year before moving to Pleasant Gardens School to teach 8th grade English. Upon consolidation of the McDowell County Schools, she moved to West McDowell Junior High where she taught 8th grade English and North Carolina History. She finished her career teaching 6th grade for several years at North Cove Elementary School. Susie officially retired in 1994 but continued her devotion to the children of McDowell County by teaching reading and volunteering her time at both West McDowell and especially North Cove Elementary. She loved to see children learn to read but also took pride in being a mentor to many, many new teachers over the years.
A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, she was devoted to the United Methodist Women and Concord United Methodist Church. The adult Sunday School Class at Concord has been known as the Susie Parks class for years as she faithfully taught every Sunday morning. Last spring she made the decision to sell her house and move into the Brooks Howell Retirement Community in Asheville to be a part of the United Methodist Church every day. In the few months she lived there, she grew to love her new friends as family.
She is far and wide famous for her cakes. Over the years she made a large majority of the birthday, wedding, and other occasion cakes in the county. Almost every Saturday was spent delivering cakes. She was also one of the most devoted UNC Tarheel fans that ever drew a breath. Everything in her classroom world was Carolina Blue, even receiving a signed Tarheel basketball upon her retirement. She also loved bird watching and all things hummingbird; so much she often would risk her life trying to feed them during snow and ice storms. A consummate dog lover, there was never a time in her life when she didn't have a dog, often more than one.
Her greatest passion was her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved and supported all of them unconditionally and fiercely. The number of birthday parties, weddings, graduations, clogging competitions, school plays, ball games, and band concerts she attended over the years is probably in the hundreds and spent countless hours sewing clogging and play costumes. Every one of her children and grandchildren has gleaned from her wisdom and has been made a better human being because of it.
Susie is preceded in death by her parents, her brother John, her sister Gail, and her son Michael who the world knew as Buck. She is survived by her three children, Susan English and husband Terry, Steve Parks and wife Anne, and Luanne Graham and husband Robert all of Marion, NC.. She leaves eight grandchildren who knew her only as Grammer (because her oldest grandchild couldn't say Grandma), Elizabeth Moretz (Justin) Deep Gap, NC, Ashley McCartha (Zack) and Rachel Brown (Kyle) both of Marion, Laura Underwood (Mike) of Manassas Virginia, Mary Cath (Cameron) of Norfolk, Virginia, Carol Anne Verhulst (Brant) of Monterey CA, Andrew O'Neill of Raleigh, and Anna Franklin-O'Neill (Brian) of Piney Flats, TN. Grammer is also survived by 11 great grandchildren, Clara and Everett McCartha, Charlotte and Kate Moretz, Susannah "Susie" Brown, Caroline, Alexandra and Jack Underwood, Lily, Virginia, and Danny Cath and baby boy Verhulst due to be born in April.
The family will receive friends at Westmoreland Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral Service is scheduled for Wednesday. January 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Concord United Methodist Church with Rev. James Mackey officiating. Susie will lie in state an hour before the funeral service at the church.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery where Mama/Grammer will be buried beside her beloved Buck. Flowers are welcome and appreciated but donations can be made to Concord United Methodist Church, 8066 Old Linville Road, Marion, NC 28752 or to McDowell County Schools Endowment Fund, PO Box 130, Marion NC 28752.
We would especially like to thank Mama's dear friend Martha Phillips for her steadfast friendship and love, the Brooks-Howell family for accepting and loving our mother and making her a part of their family; Dr. Mark Burton for his many years of devoted care and friendship; and to the staff of the Pulmonary Care unit at Mission Hospital for the excellent care they provided during the last few difficult days.
