Dad, your love was always unconditional, the unwavering warmth of our hero.
You never strayed from your true purpose, to take care of your family, and we always felt cared for; you are our hero. Your positivity, your smile, and your warm welcome will never be forgotten;
You were the beacon, the constant light in our lives, and your light will shine on in our memories of our hero. You were always admired for your innate kindness and decency, as you saw the good in everyone;
We hear you saying, “Can’t we all just get along?” a common phrase in the voice of our hero.
Your strong hands, hard-working, yet gentle; stern, yet forgiving.
You passed down your lessons of morality and integrity, and they live on in us, these teachings of our hero.
You were the rock of our family, and generous beyond measure.
Thank you, Dad, for all of your hard work throughout the entirety of your life, for your blood sweat and tears; for the strength of our hero.
You are sorely missed by your children; we will take care of your legacy, so your heart will live on in “God’s Country”; for the peace of our hero. Goodbye for now, our precious father, as we know you are with mom and you are both now free, In a place we will eventually be,
And we will then again come to see, our hero.

Carl William Smith was born on September 5, 1957, in Harrison Michigan. Carl was raised by his Grandfather Andrew Dresden, Grandmother Stella Dresden, and Uncle, Leonard Vanriper. Carl proudly served his country in the United States Air Force where his role was maintaining and preparing B-52 Stratofortress’s and the Strategic Air Command in the mission to deter thermonuclear war until completion of his enlistment and being honorably discharged from the US Air Force. Carl was always hard worker and prided himself as self-sufficient and one who was willing to put whatever effort forward was required in his many successful business endeavors. Carl Smith had a successful career as a funeral director and mortician and specifically took great pride in his functions as a mortician and skilled abilities with embalming. Carl was the owner of Mid-Michigan Mortuary Services and Smith Family Funeral Home both operating out of Harrison. Carl eventually found new success in the California oil industry where he was a highly regarded mud engineer with Geo Drilling Fluids until the time came where Carl was able to step away into retirement. Carl was an avid duck hunter and with his friends Brad Wright and Terry Jessup spent their free time designing and constructing duck blinds and then many more hours toiling to get the duck blind to actually float before launching it on Houghton Lake for their yearly waterfowl hunting endeavors.
Carl was a devoted father to two very fortunate children, Levi Smith his first-born son and Catrina Smith (maiden) his second born princess. To Carl’s delight, Catrina found her soulmate and is now happily married to Nicholas Bates. Carl was beloved by his children who will be eternally grateful for the unwavering devotion and commitment their father displayed throughout their lives and are truly blessed to be his children. Both Levi and Catrina understand that blessing and are resolute in their belief that there is simply no father that could have possibly been better.
When his children were young, Carl was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 645 in Harrison where he played an instrumental role in helping transform some awkward boys into successful well-rounded young men. Over the course of Carl’s involvement with Troop 645 there were 17 young-men that were able to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, including Carl’s son Levi. Carl was extremely proud of the small role he played in aiding the development of 17 Harrison boys into Eagle Scouts and joining the proud brotherhood of Eagle Scouts such as Neil Armstrong, Gerald Ford, Jim Lovell, Robert McNamara, Gary Peters, Steven Spielberg, and Detroit Lion David Montgomery, among many others. Besides his children, Carl’s true pride and joy was his yellow labrador retriever, Moose who would fearlessly attack the water during retrieves while duck hunting in the middle of Houghton Lake. Carl always knew that there was no duck that could not be retrieved when Moose was in the boat.
Carl was a stubborn man and anybody that got to know him quickly understood this to be true. Once Carl made a decision there was no wavering and no amount of rational reasoning would be able to sway his judgment. Carl was a proud man, he took pride in himself and his family. Carl was a brave man, he would do what was necessary and was quick to stand up for himself and others. Carl was an honest man, who never sought to gain at another’s expense. Carl’s life was full and happy. Carl loved. Carl was loved. Carl left the world a better place than how he inherited it.

Obituary Preview: Claire Louise Shaver, 93, from Holt, MI passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2024, in Harrison, MI surrounded by her family.
She was born on March 14, 1930, in Harrison, Michigan to Claire Irene (Somers) and William Hileman. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers William and wife Marion, Richard (“Dick"), and Herbert (“Bud") Hileman, sister, Marjorie Case and husband Bill Case, and son-in-law, Kirk Shewchuck.
Claire was a case record coordinator with the state of Michigan where she worked in Children’s Special Health Care Services. She was responsible for managing a caseload of over 1,000 special needs children in the northern lower peninsula. According to her co-workers, it was an all-consuming, stressful job and she handled it with professionalism, integrity, common sense and humor. Claire retired from the state of Michigan in 1992. She remained friends with many of her co-workers until her death.
After Claire retired, she traveled the world with friends and family. She enjoyed traveling and was able to visit so many wonderful places and make countless memories along the way. She enjoyed golfing in many golf leagues over the years, and especially loved golfing with her kids and grandkids. Claire was known for her great sense of humor. She always had “stories” (jokes) to tell that always had people laughing while trying to remember her jokes so they could repeat them.
She was famous for her cooking and baking. The neighborhood kids would come from blocks away to have one of her homemade cinnamon rolls, donuts or a piece of pizza, to name a few of her specialities. She was also famous for the many pies she baked. They were melt in your mouth delicious and everything was always made with love. She was an excellent seamstress. She made beautiful clothes for herself, her daughters and granddaughters. She even made clothes for their dolls. And the nightgowns she made for her daughters and granddaughters were second to none. If anything needed mending, she could mend it. Even if it seemed it was a lost cause, she would fix it. And she made the most beautiful quilts.
Claire had many wonderful neighbors in Holt who were always looking out for her, especially Kelly and John and Beth and Kim. And she looked out for them. She loved sitting on her porch and talking to them and other neighbors who might be walking by. She lived across the street from an elementary school. She loved watching the kids being dropped off and picked up each day and watching them play on the playground when they went out for recess.
Claire loved her family dearly. In her retirement she spent a lot of time going to different plays, concerts, ball games, birthday parties, etc. for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved living in Holt, but also loved spending countless weeks at the lake in Harrison. She enjoyed watching all of the activity on the lake, no matter the season. She loved seeing the many beautiful sunrises in the mornings and the beauty of the moon rising over the lake in the evenings. She was a kind, caring, funny, smart, and compassionate person her entire life. To know her was to love her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Claire is survived by her five children: Terry (Earl) Mason, Bud (Nancy) Shaver, Pam Shaver, Bonnie (Roy) Rennirt, and Tom (Terri) Shaver, along with 15 grandchildren and many great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, surviving family members, and details about the funeral or memorial service. It serves as a way to share news of the passing with friends, family, and community, while also providing a lasting tribute to the deceased.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They offer a sense of closure and allow loved ones to come together to mourn and pay their respects.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary, especially if they are handling the funeral arrangements.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

What's the role of social media in sharing obituaries?
