Joyce Ann Patterson - March 18, 1937 - February 06, 2022

Departed: 02/06/2022 (Fairlawn)
Obituary Preview: Joyce Ann Patterson, née Greene, age 84, passed away on February 6, 2022. Born at home in Kenmore on March 18, 1937. She graduated from Kenmore High School in the class of 1955 where she was a majorette. Her college days were spent at the University of Akron where she joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority, which she actively supported her entire life. She and her sorority sisters took trips together well into their seventies. While attending UA, Joyce met her husband of sixty-two years, Richard D.Patterson. Joyce was crowned May Queen and Tel-Buch Yearbook Queen while at UA, and you can still hear Dick proudly tell people he married a beauty queen. After graduating from college, Joyce worked as a secretary for Eddie Elias of Eddie Elias Industries in Akron until she and Dick married on September 3, 1960. The couple then resided in Columbus until Dick finished medical school at The Ohio State University. Joyce and Dick returned to Akron for Dick to complete his residency, welcoming their two daughters Jackie Lee and Julie Lynn. Dick volunteered for the US Army, moving their young family to Ft. Sill Oklahoma, and it was here that son Richard Jr. was born. Upon completion of Richard Sr.’s commitment to the army, the Pattersons returned to Akron and settled on Grayling Drive. Here, lifelong family friendships were formed and cemented. Joyce and Dick welcomed their fourth child, David, completing their family. Like many of the Grayling Drive group, the Pattersons moved to Bath and began what would be a forty-plus-year love affair with 4420 Bath Road. For their children, Joyce’s family dinners and unending ability to produce food and clean towels for friends coming out of the pool are legendary. You would be hard-pressed to find a Revere graduate from 1979 to 1986 who has not been to 4420. For their grandchildren, the memories that fill their hearts are hours of playing school, holiday tea parties, Easter egg tosses, and special-order dishes made just for them.
Joyce was a member of the Summit County Medical Alliance, the Women’s Board of Akron General, Bath Volunteers for Service, and Mobile Meals which she delivered for years with her  dear friend Sarah Bennett. Joyce was an active member of The Bath Church, United Church of Christ, where she served as a greeter and committee member. She was also a league member at Springside Tennis and Riviera Lanes. Joyce and Dick have lived a life devoted to their country and their community, supporting the University of Akron and many local organizations. She tutored students with learning differences at Bath Elementary School, where she also served as a room mother. As much as Joyce loved her hometown, she fell in love with Northern Michigan and enjoyed spending time at their home in Harbor Springs. More than anything, she loved when the whole family was there for the town’s Fourth of July celebrations.Joyce will be remembered for her devotion to family, fabulous cooking, and sense of humor. She was a very loving mother and grandmother who attended all of her children and grandchildren’s baseball games, gymnastics meets, and piano, guitar, and drum lessons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Walcie Greene, her brother Wendell Greene (June), and her daughter, Jackie. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard D. Patterson, Sr., her daughter Julie Ragan (Jack), and sons Richard D. Patterson, Jr. (Janine), and David Patterson, seven grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1p.m. Saturday at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd. in Fairlawn, where friends may call 11-1. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
