Suzanne Andrews - August 12, 1927 - October 20, 2023

Departed: 10/20/2023 (Conshohocken)
Obituary Preview: Suzanne Wetherill Evans was born August 12, 1927, to Elizabeth Suddards Evans and Rowland Cadwalader Evans. She was their second child; the first, Rowland Cadwalader Evans, Jr., was known as Randy. Her
two younger brothers were Charles (Chuck) and Frederick (Laird). Sue’s young life was greatly influenced by her maternal grandfather, Charles Ansdell Suddards, lovingly known as ‘Nunc’, a graduate of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. He worked from a studio where he painted landscapes and decorated furniture. He also repaired and restored works of art and antiques, which he then sold from his workshop. Randy
and Sue both received art lessons and encouragement from their ‘Nunc’. She attended Baldwin School, graduated from University of Pennsylvania
as an art major and was a member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity. Sue would meet her future husband, William Town Andrews, on a blind date during her college days. From both their stories about that first meeting, it did not go well. Regardless, they met again a few years later
and soon became a comfortable couple. They married on June 27, 1953. After a year of apartment living, Bill, a young Realtor, decided to buy the farmhouse we all grew up in as a surprise to his wife. It was a good
surprise. This colonial era stone house is still a part of the family. Predeceased by her husband, Sue is survived by her brothers Chuck and Laird, all four of her children, Liz, Andy, Mary, and Becky, their
spouses, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She loved the old stone house and its history. Sue and Bill renovated the old house, including adding plumbing and moving a staircase. During restoration work, Sue carefully stripped the many layers of paint from the woodwork, blowtorch in hand, one layer at a time, until she came to the very first original color, a dark teal blue that can still be seen today on the doors, windowsills, and especially the walk-in fireplace mantle in the living room. What patience and concentration that must have taken, especially
with us toddlers under her feet. This home base became the starting point for many family adventures, beginning with weekends and summer trips to beaches in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and Long Beach Island, New Jersey; then family camping trips to Virginia and Florida; snorkeling Christmases in Culebra, Puerto Rico; sailing the Chesapeake Bay in the 32-foot sailboat, Physalia; and flying to Ecuador to sail around the Galapagos Islands. Sue and Bill’s love of travel continued after we all “left the nest,” with trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, Scotland, Kenya, Iceland, France, Alaska, the Philippines, and several Elderhostel trips. Sue always kept a diary of sketches and writings about where they went, what they did, and what they had for dinner. Back home, chocolate labs and puppies were often in
abundance. From a second historic, restored waterfront home in Rock Hall, Maryland, which they named Gravesend, Sue and Bill enjoyed a view of their sailboat Physalia moored out front in Gray’s Inn Creek, leading to the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay. Strong supporters of the American Littoral Society, they participated in and hosted many field trips. Sue also volunteered many hours at the Academy of Natural Sciences in
Philadelphia. Like, but not like Picasso, Sue’s creative periods can be classified, not as colors, but by subject matter. When she and Bill moved to the farmhouse early in their marriage, Sue began to find Native American artifacts in the nearby fields as they were being farmed. She found hundreds of spear points, arrowheads, scrapers, and other tools over many years, as the fields were plowed each spring. Sometimes she would find a broken point one year and the rest of it the next. She studied the local geology, going rock hunting with Andy and creating local geological maps adorned with rocks of each strata. In the footsteps of her grandfather, she started her own antique shop in the adjacent barn; sadly, the barn burned down in1962, before the shop could open. She drew pen and ink sketches of historical places as well as local homes, which formed her personalized
Christmas card business. There were many adventures in nature as we explored tidewater life, nudibranchs, butterflies, birds, and microscopic plankton. Sue painted full-size portraits on cut-out plywood of relatives, cows, other animals, and tropical fish. All the while, Sue was collecting bits of local history, creating a series of notebooks documenting her research. Bill and Sue were both active members of the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society, hosting annual picnics at their historic home. Her pen and ink Illustrations and researched articles continue to appear in their newsletters. Sue spent hundreds of hours researching and documenting family genealogy, long
before online databases and genealogy apps existed. Sue traveled to France with Bill and her brother Chuck to honor the 50th anniversary of brother Randy's death in World War II. She survived
breast cancer twice. She played tennis until she was in her seventies. To the end, she enjoyed watching the Eagles, the Phillies, and Penn
State college football, but mostly the Eagles. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions can be made to the Tredyffrin Easttown Historical Society, 720
First Avenue, Berwyn, PA 19312, or online at https://www.tehistory.org/.
