Edward "Ed" H. Bartz - April 25, 1974 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (New Berlin)
Obituary Preview: Edward H. Bartz, "Ed"
Ed, age 49, of West Allis, WI, passed lovingly and peacefully into Christ's embrace on April 19th, 2024. Family and close friends were at his side. Although his heart suddenly failed, Ed leaves behind a legacy of how big and generous that heart was.
Ed was born on April 25th, 1974, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin to his parents, Russell and Ramona (Reichertz) Bartz. After graduating from Waukesha South High School in 1992, Ed embarked on a life of service through his work, his family relationships, and his friendships.
Ed’s story begins in a room known by many. A room that although concrete-fortified, could barely contain Ed and his friends. That room? The Basement. The Basement was where friendships were formed, and romances were born long before anyone knew what was to come. Ed’s competitive nature was forged in the fire of the basement. From Nerf Basketball, Table Tennis, and Pool as a boy to Bowling, Cornhole, and Darts as a man. Ed always aspired to be The Champ, and he often was.
Ed was a notoriously hard worker, someone you always wanted on your team. At Metropolitan Maintenance & Landscaping and Complete Lawn Service, Ed was known as a loyal and dependable co-worker. In his role as Parks Supervisor for the city of New Berlin, he was fair and honest, always wanting to do things the right way.
Remember The Basement? The Basement was the setting for one of the most important relationships of his life, the relationship between Ed and Vicki. Ed and Vicki were friends going back to their early teens, like many of the friendships they both had. In 2012, though, something changed. After one of their many trips to the State Fair, they decided to get together. They knew almost immediately that they would get married, which they did on April 18th, 2014. They were constant companions until the day of his passing.
Ed was an uncle and extended family member to many by title, but more like a fatherly figure in his actions. Whether watching out for his brother’s family in the Tosa duplex during second shift or opening his West Allis home from Friday through Sunday for Vicki’s family, one could rest easy knowing Ed was there.
Ed is survived by his wife, Vicki; his father, Russ; his brother, Wayne (Heidi); his beloved German Shepherd, Jordy; and countless other friends, family members, and co-workers. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ramona (Reichertz).
Join us on Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, at CHURCH AND CHAPEL NEW BERLIN FUNERAL HOME, 15250 W. National Ave, New Berlin, WI 53151. We will celebrate Ed and honor what Christ has done in his life. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM with a service immediately following. Come as you are, come and go, or stay for the service. We will be happy to see you. Enjoy a bite of food or a round of Cornhole, and bring the smiles and the laughter that we loved about Ed, and that he shared with all of us. Departed: 04/10/2024 (New Berlin)
Obituary Preview: Robert Smigla [54], passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
Bob was born on November 6, 1969, to Bernard and Joanne (Smarslik) Smigla in West Allis, WI. During high school, Bob fell in love with golf. After graduating, Bob jumped feet first into the mortgage industry. He was a national sales representative who loved the thrill of the sale and management of his team. To say that he had the gift of gab would be an understatement. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, about anything.
In 1997, Bob met his wife Katie (Testolin) while living next door in Milwaukee, where he proceeded to stalk her cat. From there, Bob moved to Cincinnati, then Atlanta, and finally landed in Chicago. Katie and Bob married in 2000 and lived in Chicago until 2023, relocating back to Milwaukee.
Bob spent his spare time golfing, spending time with family and friends and always caring for a large dog. Walking his massive canine, more often than not, led to conversations with neighbors, other dog walkers, and anyone else fortunate enough to cross their path.

He is survived by his wife Katie Testolin, his siblings John Smigla and Patricia Smigla, and his loyal canine companion Farley. Clifford "Cliff" Edward Licht - January 16, 1948 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (New Berlin)
Obituary Preview: Clifford Edward Licht, "Cliff"
On March 15, 2024, Clifford Edward Licht, known to all as Cliff, departed this world at the age of 76. Born in Boyd, WI, on January 16, 1948, Cliff's story is one of a man who strangers or acquaintances might characterize as gruff, surly, or standoffish (some might even call him crabby); but to those of us lucky enough to know the real man behind the tight-lipped scowl (i.e. “the Look”), he was quite the opposite. He loved fiercely - if in a mostly quiet way - wore his pride and stubbornness for all to see, had a devilish sense of humor, and hid a tenderness that was a rare privilege to observe.
He was greeted in the afterlife by his beloved son Ryan, his parents Norbert and Dorothy, his brothers Dick and Howard, and his four-legged ‘daughter’ Lola, all of whom had previously embarked on their own eternal adventures.
Cliff leaves behind his cherished wife Sally, who he first met in front of his parents' house, across the street from Boyd Park. Sally thought he was ‘too young’ to date at the time (for a mature young lady an entire year older) but theirs was a spark never extinguished (unlike the bushes surrounding the park) and that fire was eventually rekindled in high school (he a much more socially acceptable Junior and she a Senior).
They married July 9th, 1966, and welcomed children: Chad (wife Leslie), Sean (wife April), Ryan (departed), Melissa (husband Scott), and Regan (husband David). Who in turn provided him with his adored grandchildren: Kayleigh, Nate, Tim, and Mackenzie, Eli and Lia, Ashley (husband Mitch) and Chase (fiancé Lauren) and his precious great-grandchildren, Hayden and Mason, along with the newest Babe’s Boy soon to arrive, baby boy Coleman. Cliff's dearest dog, Lily, will also be chasing golf balls in his memory.
Cliff is also survived by loving siblings: Joe (wife Maryanne, deceased), John (wife Vicki), Pam (husband Gary), Priscilla (husband Don), Ted (wife Sandy), Steve (wife Jeanine), sisters-in-law Carol (Dick) and Marilynne (Howard) as well as a bevy of nieces and nephews and their children, not to mention a plethora of aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to count. (Norbert’s Red Shirts are still #1). Lastly, among the acquaintances and colleagues and numerous others who will mourn his passing, are the lucky few who called him friend.
Always a provider, it was an opportunity for a secure future that saw Cliff and Sally move from ‘Up North’ to Waukesha, WI where he clocked in at Milwaukee Valve before forging ahead at Wisconsin Centrifugal for over three decades. After a handful of rentals, Cliff was proud to move his young family into the beautiful house that he and his father and brothers built on four picturesque acres of land (much of which would eventually become a robust, if not very profitable, pine forest). Never one to sit idle, and despite working 3rd Shift, Cliff also served as a volunteer EMT and firefighter in Eagle, WI for 17 years, heroically saving more than one life during his tenure.
A born athlete, Cliff was a track star at Stanley-Boyd High School, as well as a talent on the basketball court (when he wasn’t distracted by blowing kisses to Sally in the bleachers) and after making the move to Eagle, WI, he earned his nickname 'Animal' in slow-pitch softball. In later years, golf became a true passion, and he called Eagle Springs Golf Resort his home clubhouse. There he ran and participated in multiple leagues, enjoyed numerous outings, achieved two of his three hole-in-ones (the third occurring at Hawk’s View Como Crossings, Lake Geneva, WI), and - perhaps most importantly - made a number of life-long friends.
Cliff was an avid outdoorsman and when he wasn’t golfing, he spent much of his post-retirement time at his home away from home: The Cabin. A founding member of Babe’s Boys Hunting Club, there he enjoyed pursuing deer, turkey and other quarry with both bow and gun, as well as spending many long, cold hours (in a nice, heated shanty) ice fishing, and finally putting a dent in the beer supply with his brothers, sons and grandsons.
There aren't enough words to summarize a life as rich and full and storied, (or a person as strong, caring, handsome, wise, curmudgeonly, stubborn, loud and obnoxious) as Cliff's, but we invite you to add your own as we remember a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, a friend, and a truly amazing, unforgettable man.
Please join us in celebrating Cliff at his Memorial Visitation on Friday, March 22nd from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Church and Chapel of Brookfield, WI. The gathering will be informal with casual dress and at 6:30 time will be set aside for those who wish to share fond memories, heartfelt words or amusing stories about Cliff. If considering a gift of flowers, arrangements including plants would be appreciated; or in lieu of flora, please consider a donation to St. Jude's Children's Fund in Cliff’s name https;//www.stjude.org Church & Chapel Funeral Service Serving the Family Milwaukee 262-827-0659 Waukesha 262-549-0659 Online Obit, Condolences, Directions www.churchandchapel.com

Charles "Chuck" E. Swanson - January 21, 1931 - March 11, 2024

Departed: 03/11/2024 (New Berlin)
Obituary Preview: Charles E. Swanson, "Chuck"
Chuck passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024, at the age of 93. Chuck was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on January 21, 1931, to Carl and Ruth Swanson. He came from a loving family of three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann (nee Horvath) Swanson; sisters Helen (the late Robert) Patrick and Joyce (the late Walter) Hrban, sister-in-law Ruth (Don) Harmon and other family members.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, son Randy Swanson, brothers Orval (the late Rosanne) Swanson, Sherman Swanson and Virgil (Evie) Swanson and others.
Chuck was a very tough fellow his entire life. When he was three years old, he had bad stomach pains and was rushed to the hospital. He had to have his appendix removed. The doctor didn't think Chuck would survive, so he taped up his incision. Well, Chuck surprised everyone.
Chuck served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1954. His rank was an AM-2 which stands for an Aviation Metalsmith Petty Officer, Second Clas. This rank is as high as a sergeant.
Chuck and Ann were married on May 7, 1955, and were approaching 69 years of marriage together. The love they had for each other was a true love story. Their lives were not without sorrow; however, when their son Randy, suffered a birth injury and passed away shortly before his 12th birthday. This only made their marriage stronger. Chuck watched over Ann and their entire marriage and took care of her for over two years when she became ill.
Chuck worked as a paint compounder at the former Anchor Paint and Coatings Company in Waukesha and retired after 27 years.
Chuck had many hobbies. He had a huge vegetable garden consisting of tomatoes, peppers, beans, potatoes, cucumbers, etc. He was so proud of the huge peppers her grew. In addition, he had a flower garden. He was a winemaker and made delicious wine and loved giving it to friends and family. Chuck and Ann would sit for hours sipping one glass of wine. Maybe that's what accounted for their longevity! Chuck also loved to barbeque and cook. Everyone enjoyed excellent meals at their home.
Chuck also loved the outdoors. he had a fishing boat and spent hours fishing. Chuck and Ann took many trips up north, rented cottages and visited family. Lorraine Josephine Johnson - December 02, 1919 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (New Berlin)
Obituary Preview: Lorraine Josephine Johnson, (nee Roedel)
Born on December 2, 1919, to Carl and Clara (nee Wichmann) Roedel in Milwaukee. Born to eternal life on February 22, 2024, at age 104 at Angels Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc. Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Robert W. Johnson. She was loving mother to Jane (Daniel) Basarich of Waukesha, Robert H. (Gloria) of Muskego and Thomas (Nancy) of Palmyra. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson, Julie (Patrick) McNamee, John (Kristen) Basarich, Tammy (Michael) Doyle, Kristen (Matthew) Ewig, Heidi (Justin) Good, Michael (Amy) Basarich, Nicole (Scott) Hagen, Adam (Molly) Basarich, and Robert A. (Kayla) Johnson. Lorraine’s great grandchildren, whom she loved so much are: Jack and Luke Basarich; Layla, Benjamin, Joy Lorraine, and Kate Basarich; Eli and Micho Basarich; Oliver and Emmett McNamee; Nolan, Anna Lorraine and Benjamin Ewig; Michaela and Jackson Doyle; Isabelle Lorraine and Nathan Zens and Wyatt, Riley and Elise Good; Zachary and Brooklyn Hagen, and Brandon Barney. Also survived by great great grandchild Paisley Barney. Lorraine is also survived by her nephew Richard Wayne Roedel, and her nieces Susan Roedel and Charlene Roedel. Preceded in death by her parents Carl and Clara Roedel and her brothers Norton Roedel and Richard Paul (Mary) Roedel, and her nephew Philip (Rita) Roedel.
Lorraine was born during the pandemic of 1918-19, was raised during the Great Depression, followed her husband to Newport, RI while he was stationed there during World War II, continued living in her home in Greendale following the death of her husband in 1973 until 2022, and survived the pandemic of 2020. She would have loved to have gone to college, but instead helped support her mother and brothers following the illness and death of her father. She was raised mostly in West Allis and raised her children there for several years. Then she and her husband moved to Greendale with their children in 1962, where she was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church until her death.
Lorraine was a very loving stay-at-home mother and homemaker. During her children’s grade school days, she was a very involved parent, and was a member and officer of the Parent Teachers Organization. She continued to be a mother to all her extended family, having a special connection to everyone. She was never judgmental and was always inclusive.
Some of her favorite memories were of camping in the Wisconsin north woods at Franklin Lake near Eagle River. She had a love of nature and especially birds, which she passed on to her children and daughters-in law, Gloria and Nancy. Lorraine had a great interest in current events and read the newspaper from cover to cover, which she in late life gave up because she “didn’t have time to do anything else”. Upon losing her husband, she volunteered at a widowed persons’ support group, took a class to learn how to take care of her car, learned how to handle a checking account since they never had one, took lifelong learning classes, and had a curiosity and interest in virtually everything. She said that everybody should learn something new every day, and that new experiences were important. Her memory was amazing, and as an example she could name her childhood neighbors, what nationality they were and what the father did for a living. She had a special place in her heart for Native American culture and contributed to some of their charities. She always gave the reason for her long life as having at least one cup of Lipton tea with lemon and plenty of honey every day.
Lorraine was a woman of strong faith. She drew on that faith for strength and comfort during her trials, and especially in her very challenging last few years. Her faith and character also helped her look at life in very positive way, which inspired all who knew her.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial service arrangements, and any charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the person's life, share memories, and offer condolences to those who are grieving. Obituaries can also be a valuable resource for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional writer. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial service arrangements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

You can usually submit an obituary through the publication's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to follow their guidelines for submission and payment.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and other factors. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a great opportunity to showcase the person's personality and sense of humor. Including personal anecdotes and stories can make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details that you don't want to share publicly, it's best to omit them or phrase them carefully. Remember that an obituary is intended to be a celebration of the person's life, not a tell-all.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the person can add depth and personality to the tribute. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

What if I need to make corrections or changes to an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication directly and they will guide you through their process for making corrections or updates. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting the changes.

Can I republish an obituary online or in multiple newspapers?

Yes, many publications offer options for republishing an obituary online or in multiple newspapers. Check with each publication for their policies and fees.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online publications may publish immediately, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I request a proof copy of the obituary before it's published?

Some publications offer proof copies or previews before publication. Be sure to ask about this option when submitting your obituary.

What if I'm unsure about what to include or how to write an obituary?

Dont worry! Many funeral homes and online resources offer guidance and templates to help you write an obituary. You can also ask a friend or family member for assistance.

Is it possible to publish an anonymous obituary?

In most cases, no. Obituaries typically require verification of the person's identity and connection to the submitter. However, there may be exceptions for certain circumstances such as anonymous donors or public figures.

Can I include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Including this information can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I ensure that all relevant family members are notified about the passing?

Making sure all family members are informed can be challenging. Consider creating a list of contacts and designating someone to reach out to each person personally.

What if there is conflict within the family about what to include in the obituary?

In cases of conflict, it may be helpful to involve a neutral third party such as a funeral director or counselor to facilitate communication and decision-making.

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page in addition to publishing an obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages can provide a space for friends and family to share memories and condolences beyond what's possible in a traditional print obituary.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of online availability varies depending on the publication's policies. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.
