Obituary Preview: Lance Thomas Fischer, 51, of Houghton Lake passed away on Thursday March 11, 2021 at home.
Lance was born on August 23, 1969 at Selfridge Air Force Base in Mt. Clemens, Michigan to Bernard and Phyllis (Rogers) Fischer. He moved with his family to the Houghton Lake area in 1978 where he graduated from Houghton Lake Community Schools. Lance went on to attend Kirtland Community College. He was a "jack of all trades" and most of his working career was spent as a roofer for local contractors. He had also worked several years in the oil fields for oil Companies in Texas, New Mexico, and West Virginia. Lance enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and off-roading. His special love was being a hunting guide in the Houghton Lake area.
Surviving Mr. Fischer are his son, Damien Fischer of Tallahassee, FL; three brothers, Joe (Jen) Fischer of DeWitt, John (Iris) Fischer of Seymour, IN, and Bruce (Edie) Fischer of Franklin, VA; two sisters, Annette Bell of Apple Valley, CA, and Bernice Burgess of Highlands, TX; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lance was preceded in death by his father, Bernard H Fischer.

Barbara Therese Kalt Sussex - March 12, 1927 - March 09, 2021

Obituary Preview: Barbara Therese Kalt Sussex, age 93 of Prudenville passed away on Tuesday March 9, 2021 at Bethany Care Home in Jackson, Michigan where she had been a resident for the past five years.
Barbara was the only child of Andrew and Marie (Rossley) Kalt and was born on March 12, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan. The family moved to Jackson in the early 1940’s. She graduated from St. John High School in Jackson and later completed her bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo. After college she worked at the Flint School for the Deaf until she married the love of her life. She and Thomas M. Sussex were united in marriage on March 31, 1951 and lived in Jackson where they had nine children. The family moved to Houghton Lake in 1971. Barbara was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and was very active in the church for many years. She played the organ for services at Our Lady of Lake and at the St. Helen Catholic Church for several years. She was devoted to her church, her husband, and her children and grandchildren. Barbara was exceptionally kind and caring to others. She loved cats and was known to provide a home for many strays.
Barbara is survived by her loving children; Thomas (Donna) Sussex of Iowa, John Sussex of Prudenville, Patrick (Nancy) Sussex of Prudenville, Mary (Bob Quinn) Sussex of New Mexico, Elisabeth Sussex of New Mexico, Teresa (Hector) Reyes of Florida, Madonna Sussex of Gaylord, Andrew (Kelli) Sussex of Commerce Twp., and Regina Sussex of California, seventeen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren and two daughters-in-law.
Mass of Christian Burial for Barbara Therese Kalt Sussex will take place on Friday March 12, 2021 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church at 10 am with Father Peter Eke officiating. Visitation will take place at the church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the service. Pat was born on October 20, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to Stephen and Marie (McNally) Hickey. She married William "Bill" E. Krentz on December 26, 1957 in Flint, Michigan. The couple moved to Houghton Lake in July 1972. They opened the Floor Store in Houghton Lake in July 1977. Pat opened Pats Cut and Curl in 1978. She had a way with people. Pat had a welcoming smile and always loved to engage in a good conversation. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church.
Pat is survived by her loving children; Tammy Krentz of Traverse City, Debbie (Geoffrey) Galbraith of Cheboygan and Jeff Krentz of Houghton Lake, sister; Rose Markiewicz of Houghton Lake, nieces; Lynn Willaims and Julie Markiewicz, nephews; Ray (Deb) Markiewicz and Mike (Carol) Markiewicz. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, daughter; Karen, grandchildren; Emma and Chase, brother; John Hickey, ister-in-laws; Ruth Kautz and Lois Krentz, brother-in-laws; Bob Markiewicz and Eldon Kautz. Funeral Services for Patricia Ann Krentz will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Thursday March 11, 2021 from St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Kruse officiating. Becky was born on July 31, 1940 in Lansing, to Claude and Wilma (Miller) Harper. Becky grew up in the Lansing area where she graduated from high school. On July 4, 1961 Becky was married in Carson City, Michigan to the love of her life Raymond Gesselman. Raymond preceded her in death in 2016. The couple spent a loving 55 years together and now are reunited in Heaven. Becky spent over 30 years of dedicated service with the City of Lansing Parking Enforcement Division before her retirement. The couple had moved to Prudenville in 2011 after 50 years in their DeWitt Township home. Most of the people that Becky came in contact with may never know her name, but they may be carrying with them a "CROSS IN YOUR POCKET" that she had sewn and given away to everyone she met.
Mrs. Gesselman leaves behind three children, Deb Whitney, Rick(Marsha) Whitney and Sandy(Bill) Foley; five grandchildren, Craig, Jacob, Krista(Ron), Jessica(Justin) and Lindsey(Jake); five great grandchildren, Gage, Addy, Sierra, Olivia, and Ashley; sister, Joyce Meister; three sisters-in-law, Susan, Rita, and Rosanna; brother-in-law Larry(Linnea); and many nieces, and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; daughter, Wendie; Grandson, Derek; brother, Dale; sister, Barb; and four brothers-in-law, Doug, Jim, Gene, and Lloyd.

Robert "Bob" W. Carroll - July 14, 1937 - February 01, 2021

Obituary Preview: Robert "Bob" W. Carroll, age 83, of Houghton Lake passed away on Monday February 1, 2021 at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital.
Bob was born on July 14, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan to Ellsworth and Helen (Burke) Carroll. He served in the US Navy Reserves for 4 years. Robert was married on May 17, 1958 in Detroit to Ilene J. Harwood. He retired from St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia where he worked in maintenance, he loved to play practical jokes on the nurses and doctors. The couple moved to Houghton Lake after Bob retired. As a child he would come to the area to vacation and spend time with his grandparents. He attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Bob enjoyed listening to opera and Mario Lanza. After work Bob would come home and start cooking, as he was cooking he would begin to sing and dance with his wife. Bob would enjoy spending time at the senior center. He contributed to the Houghton Lake Youth travel basketball team. Bob always enjoyed interacting with people and was known for his sense of humor, especially with his grandchildren. He loved to travel with the love of his life all over Northern Michigan and throughout the Upper Peninsula. Family trips consisted of going to campgrounds in Northern Michigan where the family could all spend time together. After his retirement he was finally able to fulfill his dream of owning a home on Houghton Lake where the family could come and spend time and enjoy the lake. Bob loved his wife dearly and always enjoyed spending time with her and his family.
Robert W. Carroll is survived by his loving wife of 62 years; Ilene Carroll, daughters; Joanne (Dale) Bennett, Donna (Mike) Gough, Lynda (Michael) DuBay and Christine Carroll, son; Shawn (Carol) Carroll, nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother; Jack Carroll.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 am on Tuesday February 9, 2021 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Father Peter Eke officiating. Carol is survived by her loving husband of 42 years; Tom Rodgers of Houghton Lake, son; Robert (Chari) Wirth of Cedar Park, Texas and daughter; Dawn (Richard) Nicholas of Knotts Island, North Carolina, sisters; Kay Moss of Florida and Nancy Hupert of Florida, brothers; Glen (Pam) Hupert of Florida and Brian Hupert of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister; Diane.
Funeral Services for Carol Elizabeth Rodgers will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Friday January 29, 2021 from Christler Funeral Home-Prudenville Chapel with Chaplain Karen Henderlong officiating. Thomas F. Tincoff - January 15, 1933 - January 26, 2021

Obituary Preview: Thomas Fabian Tincoff, 88, of Prudenville died Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at West Branch Medical Center in West Branch, Michigan.
Thomas, "Tom”, was born on January 15, 1933 in Romeo, Michigan to John and Julia Tincoff. He was raised in Richmond, the second of three siblings who worked alongside their mother and father in the family restaurant and hotel. Tom attended Catholic elementary school, was an altar server and was known to sing solos as a young child at Mass. Tom was well liked in school, serving as class president throughout his years at Richmond High School. He was the quarterback of the county championship football team his senior year. While Tom entertained the idea of playing football in college, he decided to focus on academics completing a five year cooperative program finishing with an A.B. in History from Albion College and a B.A. in Forestry from University of Michigan.
After graduation, Tom served in the United States Army earning a rank of Private and was an Atomic Weapons Mechanical Assembler. He received a Good Conduct Medal and was an Expert Rifleman. Tom greatly enjoyed working as a smokejumper fighting forest fires in Idaho, Oregon and California, returning to the reunions of the smokejumpers with his wife in their later years. He was adventurous in his young adult years and drove cars across the United States from Michigan to California, hitchhiking his way back. He also was a land surveyor which took him to many parts of the United States where his love of the outdoors was enjoyed.
Tom continued his career working in sales for the Detroit Lumber Company and the Aetna Life Insurance Company from which he retired. Tom met his future wife, Barbara Barnet, in Port Huron and on August 4, 1962 they were married in Port Huron. Tom and Barb raised their family in Royal Oak, where he was a member of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica Church where he served many years as an usher. The couple moved from Royal Oak to Prudenville in 2016. Tom attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church of Prudenville and was involved with the Veterans group in Houghton Lake.
Surviving Mr. Tincoff are his three daughters, Theresa (Lou) Longo of Barrington, IL, Christine (Chris) Fischer of Ann Arbor, and Ruth (Bruce Inglehart) Tincoff of Boise, ID; seven grandchildren, Marissa, Louis (Jack), Annemarie, Amanda, Ryan, Gwen and Fay; brother, William (Donna) Tincoff of Flint, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Barbara Tincoff, parents, and brother, John Tincoff.

Jim was born on August 17, 1940 in Durand, Michigan to Wesley and Evelyn (Berkley) Stender. He grew up in the Durand area, moving to Plymouth with his family. Jim graduated from Plymouth High School. He was employed with MichCon in the Detroit area for several years. Jim was married October 5, 1963 in Livonia to Carol A. Atwood. The couple moved to Prudenville from Taylor in 1975. They established the Autumn Valley Crematory and Vault Company in 1975 and operated it until Jim retired. Carol preceded Jim in death in 2009. Jim was married to Lynda J. Atwood in Prudenville on October 2, 2010 and she survives. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, and a longtime member of the Denton Twp. Fire Department. Jim was one of the four founders of the Michigan Fireman's Memorial in Roscommon and was a board member of many years. He loved to travel and especially go big game hunting.
Surviving Mr. Stender are his loving wife of 10 years, Lynda Stender of Prudenville; two sons, Russ Stender of Ohio, and Rod (Misty) Stender of Houghton Lake; two granddaughters, Ashley Stender of Frankenmuth, and Rachael Stender of Frankenmuth; two great grandchildren, Callie Johnson and Landyn Slater; brother, Jerry (Marlene) Stender of Prudenville; several nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents, and first wife, Carol Stender. Private Family Funeral Services for James W. Stender will be conducted. Interment will be in Denton Township Cemetery, Prudenville. Visitation will be held on Thursday January 21, 2021 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Christler Funeral Home, Prudenville Chapel. On December 9, 1944, Robert was born in Peoria, Illinois, to George and Margaret (Morris) Berg. During the Vietnam Era, he proudly served in the United States Air Force and was married on November 11, 1967, in Richmond, Michigan, to Carol L. Clancy. Robert retired from General Motors, where he was a very successful loan officer living in Mount Clemens for many years until he retired and moved to St. Helen with Carol. A proud and faithful member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the St. Helen Catholic Church, he enjoyed woodworking and making gifts for his family and friends in his spare time.
Robert is survived by his daughters; Holly (Dan) Jablonski of Holly and Wendy (Kevin Yensch) Berg of Adrian, grandchildren; Zachary, Brendan, Payton, and Nicholas, brother; Tim (Helen) Berg, sisters; Carol (Jim) Paluska and Linda Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife, Carol.
Mass of Christian Burial for Robert Roy Berg will be conducted at St. Helen Catholic Church on Friday, February 5, 2021 at 10:00 am followed by interment at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at 2:00 pm. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, masks covering the mouth and nose will be required, social distancing will be observed, and church capacity is limited to 50 people at any given time.

Barbara Ruth Tincoff - August 14, 1932 - January 03, 2021

Obituary Preview: Barbara Ruth (Barnet) Tincoff, 88, of Prudenville passed away from complications of dementia on Sunday January 3, 2021 at The Brook in Grayling.
Barbara was born on August 14, 1932 in Port Huron, Michigan to John and Ruth (Wittliff) Barnet. She was raised in Port Huron, the fourth of five siblings, who together growing up worked in the successful family business, Barnet Drugs. She especially enjoyed running the ice cream counter. As her father said, “We worked, played, and prayed together.” Her Catholic faith was always at the forefront of Barbara’s life. From a young age, Barbara was drawn to serving God. As a high school student, she played the organ at early morning Masses. Upon graduation from St. Stephen High School, Barbara followed her mother’s wish and attended St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame; but after one year, she pursued her long-time calling to the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe. While a Sister, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Marygrove College and then taught in area Catholic elementary schools. After seven years, she found God had a different plan for her, and she left the Sisters and returned to her beloved Port Huron where she taught underprivileged children. Before long, she met and married the love of her life. On August 4, 1962 in Port Huron Barbara was married to Thomas F. Tincoff. They raised their family in Royal Oak, where she was a very involved member of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica church and schools. Throughout her life, Barbara continued to be God’s servant teaching young children in schools and religious education. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and always encouraged them. The couple moved from Royal Oak to Prudenville in 2016. She was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church of Prudenville, and very proud of her work with the St. Thérèse Ladies Guild at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak.
Surviving Mrs. Tincoff are her loving husband of 58 years, Thomas F. Tincoff of Prudenville; three daughters, Theresa (Lou) Longo of Barrington, IL, Christine (Chris) Fischer of Ann Arbor, and Ruth (Bruce Inglehart) Tincoff of Boise, ID; seven grandchildren, Marissa, Louis (Jack), Annemarie, Amanda, Ryan, Gwen and Fay; brother, Dr. Robert (Carol) Barnet of Falls Church, VA; many nieces and nephews. Shirley was born on December 1, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to Roy & Alice (Quinn) Winston. She was an administrative secretary for many years before retiring. Shirley was married on November 29, 1946 in Clearwater, Florida to Clarence Carter Whelpley. The couple moved to Prudenville in 1985 from Dearborn Heights. She was a member of Houghton Lake United Methodist Church; she was on the Mission Committee and part of the development of the Memorial Garden and was always helping with the community dinners at church. She was a member of the Houghton Lake Does. Houghton Lake Historical Society; where she would participate in the fundraising with making cookie baskets and doing bake sales for the Historical Days and Santa's Workshop. She was a founding member of the Red Scarlett's with the Red Hat Group. Shirley enjoyed volunteering and spending time with her family.
Shirley is survived by her loving daughter; Linda (David) Udy of Roscommon, grandchildren; Kevin (Rachel) Udy and Bradley (Ashley) Udy, great-grandchildren; Carter, Parker, Wynn, Cameron, Claire and Bennett, son-in-law: Jim Michaels. Clarence was born on April 2, 1926 in Saginaw, Michigan to Joseph and Agatha (Caffo) Michela. He graduated from Saginaw High School, class of 1944. Clarence served as a CPL in the US Army during World War II. He was married on May 20, 1949 to Donna M. Nieman. The couple owned and operated the M&D Food Store for over 40 years. After retirement, they moved to Frankenmuth and later to Prudenville. Clarence was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Saginaw and currently a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Houghton Lake. He was devoted to his church and family. Clarence enjoyed working with his model trains and railroad, woodworking, gardening, he always had a project or two going on.

Ken was born on June 28, 1946 in Muncie, Indiana to Harry and Dorothy (Bratton) Vest. He grew up in Muncie and graduated from Muncie High School. Following high school Ken worked for Coca Cola Bottling and a water pump Manufacturer in Muncie. Ken met Mary Margaret Berger in Michigan while visiting relatives. The relationship blossomed in to marriage in Saginaw on August 10, 1974. The couple lived in Flint and Frankenmuth before moving to Higgins Lake in 2003 where they had a cottage for over 30 years. After moving to Michigan, Ken worked in production for General Motors at the Flint Buick Plant for 30 years. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church where he was very active as an usher, member of the outreach team, enjoyed attending the Men's Group each week, and was always an active part of preparing the community meals at St. John's. His pride and joy was his John Deere tractor, which he would travel the neighborhood clearing the snow from the driveways. His true love was his family and spending time with them.
Surviving Mr. Vest are his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Margaret Vest of Higgins Lake; three daughters, Lindsey Vest of Higgins Lake, Leslye Vest of Higgins Lake, and Leigh Vest of Trufant; several nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; sister, MaryLou McConiha; two brothers, Harry and Ernest.

Surviving Mrs. Bieniak are her two sons, Dennis Bieniak of Prudenville and David (Sheryl) Bieniak of Dearborn; grandson, Warren Bieniak of Dearborn, many nieces and nephews. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Bieniak; four sisters Virginia Grzych, Irene Guajaedo, Josephine Kosmyna and Mary Kunik, brother, Raymond Klosowski. Mass of Christian Burial for Dolores T. Bieniak will be conducted at 12:00 pm Wednesday December 9, 2020 from Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Eke officiating.
