Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise yet meaningful summary of the person's life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, awards, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

What if I don't want an obituary published?

If you prefer not to have an obituary published, you can express your wishes to your loved ones or include it in your will or advance directive. However, keep in mind that this may make it difficult for friends and acquaintances to learn about your passing.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after its initial publication. Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to request changes.
