Earl R. Ahlstedt - September 27, 1933 - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: On Feb 4, 2024, Earl R. Ahlstedt joined his two ornery brothers Gordon and Robert and his parents Emery Ahlstedt and Hazel (Swedberg) Ahlstedt at the heavenly coffee table. Born September 27, 1933, Earl made his transition at 90 years old. His dear sister Eleanor Ostlind, of Lindsborg, is the sole survivor of his first family.
Earl, or “Papa Earl” as he was affectionately known, was a large presence in the lives of so many of his family and friends. He was tall at 6’4” which he commonly referred to as “average size” but it was so much more than his height that made him loom large.
He was known for his big, strong handshake – his gigantic hand just enveloped any hand that shook it, and he taught each of his kids the importance of looking someone in the eye and giving a firm handshake – as if all evidence of your character was embodied in that moment.
His hands were his tools – provided his livelihood in his profession as carpenter for more than 50 years, a trade he learned as apprentice of, and then partner with, his father. He was clever and innovative and could do just about anything with those hands. And rumor has it, his hands often held a hot cup of coffee–one of 20-30 cups per day.
Earl had a HUGE Heart! He valued service to his family, and community, and was the first to volunteer to help with local events and festivals, assist neighbors in need or oversee house projects for his kids. He appreciated the culture and traditions of the small Lindsborg community and embraced the commitment to give his time and talents where and when needed.
He was an active member over many years of the Folkdanslag (Swedish Dancers) and the Kiwanis Club. He served as a volunteer firefighter in his younger years, led the Pride Committee, and sang in the Messiah Chorus for nearly 50 years. He helped with many festivals, moving bleachers around, setting up sets for Broadway RFD (and singing in a few), and helping build floats for parades. His team's floats were always reflective of his and his teams’ cheeky personality – and funny.
Earl was a long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church. He was proud of his Swedish heritage – both his ancestry and as a graduate of his beloved Bethany College (Swedes). He was part of Hyllningsfest Royalty as King for the 2015 Hyllningsfest. He proudly served his country in the US Army in active duty from 1955-1957 as a clerk typist. After returning from Germany he served as a reservist with his final rank of E6.
Work was his currency and his family had many weekend projects at one of their homes to update plumbing or electrical, install flooring, tear down walls or paint. No task was too tough when Earl was on hand. He often said that our family could get more done by accident than most could do with a well-thought out plan. He wasn’t wrong. But it was never the work that was the most important thing. He valued the time together – learning, laughing and earning a sense of accomplishment. Earl had a grand, infectious smile and laugh. He worked hard, but he played hard too. He loved tennis and started the Tuesday Night Tennis (TNT) group that went on for many years. He loved golf and hosted 2-3 foursomes every year in the Ol Stuga Charity Tournament –which brought a group of guys in his family together annually for 20+ years to play golf and cards and work on a project together. Once invited, none would ever miss. He played bridge and gin and other card games, and he LOVED puzzles. He was quite the athlete, despite not competing a lot in his early years and he played the Lindsborg Affiliated tennis tournaments every summer with
his kids or brothers. But of all the things that Earl was involved in and proud of, there was nothing more important to him than his family. In 1959, he married Annamae Johnson. They were married for nearly 20 years. They had three children: Angie (Elmer Patterson), Andie (Kevin Fulton), and A.J. (Suzanne Vogel). He told anyone within earshot how proud he was of his kids and his 7 grandkids (Kendall and Addie Dunbar, Lucy, Sam and Elle Ahlstedt, and Aaron (Morgan) Fulton and Emma Fulton Guarino, and one great granddaughter Ellie Guarino. Extended family came from near and far every Hyllningsfest and Earl hosted everyone for lunch and reunion after the parade. His cousins were so special to him, as were his nieces and nephews–and each of them
had a special place in his heart. Every work project, every fishing trip to Tayor lake or golf or tennis outing was never about the activity or result for Earl – it was all about the relationships and time together with family and friends. He always had his priorities straight.
We will miss his large physical presence in our lives day-to-day, but his legacy is larger than life and our fond memories of our time with Papa Earl will live on in our hearts forever.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday Feb 9, 5-7;00 p.m. at Crick-Christians Funeral Home in Lindsborg, KS. Funeral Service is Saturday, Feb 10 at 1:00 at Messiah Lutheran Church,
followed by a reception at the church. Burial and committal services will be held 3:45 p.m. at Salemsborg Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post #140 Honor Guard.

Ronald E. Clarke - July 25, 1939 - February 02, 2024

Departed: 02/02/2024 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: Ronald Eugene Clarke was a dedicated educator and coach who touched the lives of many students and athletes. He was born on July 25th, 1939, in Buhler, Kansas, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1957. He pursued his passion for teaching at Hutchinson Community College and Bethany College, earning his degree in 1962. He was married in 1960 and has two sons, Timothy and Patrick.
His teaching career began at Riverside School, where he wore many hats: he was the principal, the teacher for all subjects in grades 6 to 8, and the coach for softball, basketball, and track. When Riverside closed, he moved to Smolan Schools as the principal and coach for basketball and track.
He then landed a job at Soderstrom Elementary School in Lindsborg, where he taught English, Reading, and History. He also took charge of the football team, the seventh-grade boys basketball team, and the track team.
After three years at Soderstrom, he made a bold move: he gave up football to start the girls’ volleyball program, which became his lifelong passion. He also coached the eighth-grade boys’ basketball and track for decades.
Towards the end of his teaching career, he focused on coaching girls’ volleyball, with a brief stint helping Russ Weibert with boys’ basketball.
After retirement, he enjoyed running the scoreboard for basketball and volleyball games, jumping on a train to visit his grandkids in California, carving Christmas ornaments for his loved ones, devouring Mystery and Western books, and visiting his friends and family.
Cremation has been chosen and memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday March 1st at Crick-Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, Lindsborg.

Wendell C. L. Lundberg - December 15, 1940 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: Wendell C.L. Lundberg, 83, of Lindsborg passed away Friday, January 19, 2024 at Salina Regional Health Center. Wendell was born December 15, 1940 in McPherson, to the late Raymond L. and Maud E. (Andes) Lundberg. Wendell grew up on a farm until his family relocated in Lindsborg, where he attended Lindsborg public schools. He was active in athletic programs from
junior high through high school, a strong, serious, reliable team player.
After graduating from Lindsborg Rural High School in 1958 he attended Bethany College where he excelled as a pitcher in the college baseball program.
Wendell also played baseball in a non-college league in his younger years, something akin to "minor leagues" in central KS. He was fond of quoting a sports journalist, saying with a big smile that he pitched a baseball so fast, “I could throw a strawberry through a locomotive.” Wendell was once scheduled to pitch against the legendary Robert "Satchel" Paige, but the famous Hall of Famer was indisposed that day.
He also played football in high school and at Bethany. Wendell followed his favorite professional and college teams throughout his life, and could be an observant, critical Monday morning quarterback.
After completing school, he worked for many years as an airport lineman at McPherson Airport, and at CertainTeed, McPherson.
A life-long bachelor, Wendell believed there was no meal, gourmet or otherwise, that could not be improved by using Ranch dressing. There was no point in attempting to dissuade him.
He was also an inveterate Kansas Lottery player. Although he lost his shirt, he talked about how he would split a big win with his relatives, especially his nieces. Wendell had a fine bass voice and enjoyed singing in the Messiah Chorus in his younger years. He sometimes shared songs with friends with perfect tune and text recall, and phoned friends on their birthdays to wish them a happy birthday with his own peppy version of the birthday song. He valued friends
and family and communicated with them often throughout his life. Wendell was often ready with a smile or a laugh, but thought deeply about matters of the spirit, always willing to share with others his views of spiritual experience. He combined those serious beliefs, which he could discuss at length, with a sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke and entertaining turn of phrase. Many of Wendell’s friends thought he was "one of a kind."
Wendell is survived by his nieces Debbie Lundberg Myers and her husband Jay Myers, of Lindsborg; Linda (Sissy) Lundberg and her wife, Karen Lyons, of Wells; Amy Verdon of Chicago, IL; and his brother-in-law Roger Verdon, Lindsborg, as well as numerous extended family members and many, many friends.
Wendell is preceded in death by his parents; brother: Lloyd Lundberg and his wife Georgana, and his sister Norma Lyn (Lundberg) Verdon.
Cremation has been chosen and the family will have a celebration or life at a later date.

Patricia Ann Bellah - August 26, 1936 - December 18, 2023

Departed: 12/18/2023 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: Our mom was born in McPherson, Kansas, on August 25, 1936 to Everett and Gladys (Schultz) McClelland. She was raised in Hoxie, Kansas, where her father was an extension agent. While her sister Shirley could usually be found reading a book, Mom was a bit of a tomboy who more often than not was outside playing ball with her brother Lynn.
Mom attended high school in Washington, Kansas, where she was a cheerleader and played in the band. We only ever knew that she had been Homecoming Queen from our grandfather, who was more likely to brag about how she played on his men’s softball team. Even as a teenager, Mom was always a friend to the friendless and reached out to those in need.
Mom went to Kansas State University where she was a member of Clovia Academic Sorority and majored in psychology. She was deeply bothered by the segregation of the 1950’s but also a little naive about racism. When we lived in Nashville in the early ’60’s, she smuggled her colored clothes into the Whites Only laundromat.
It was at K-State that Mom met our dad, Glenn Bellah, and they were married on May 26, 1957. Our dad once said that marrying Mom was the best thing he had ever done, but it may have been the second best because he was also an awesome dad. They settled in Lindsborg, Kansas, where Dad taught in the biology department at Bethany College, and Mom was an active member of Bethany Dames and served as a dorm mother.
Lindsborg became their forever home where they raised four children: Karil, Robi, Rick and John. Mom and Dad always encouraged us to participate in any activities available, and they attended numerous ball games (even if we were just coaching them), music concerts, and speech and drama events. Friends always felt welcome at our house, and they didn’t need to be related to us to be considered family.
Mom and Dad joined Trinity United Methodist Church where Mom was involved in lay ministry of every kind. I can’t remember a youth activity I attended at Trinity that my mom wasn’t a part of. One of her favorite projects was the community World Day of Prayer. Mom invested her time in people. She spent a large part of each week visiting residents in Lindsborg and Marquette nursing homes. She enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels not only because the people needed a meal but because they needed a cheerful visit.
Mom and Dad enjoyed everyday life together as much as they enjoyed pursuing new adventures through traveling. The only drawback for Mom was that their trips usually required her to pass a botany quiz, so Dad could be sure that she was really listening to him.
Mom rejoiced as our family expanded with marriage, grandchildren and great-grands.
Karil Bellah married Dale Sader. Their children are Rachel Bellah and Derek Hickey; Scott Sader and sons Winston and Truman; Lisa and Travis Allen and their children Henry, Conrad and Hazel. Eric Sader and Ben Ale-Ebrahim and son Gabe.
Robi and Tom Alstrom’s children are Kali and Phil Witek and son Bowen; Seth Alstrom; Breta Alstrom and David Hunter.
Ann (Desmo) Baca joined our family through her marriage to Rick. Mom’s world was rocked by tragedy in Rick’s death in a boating accident. Her pain was long and deep but mitigated through forgiveness and the continued relationship with Ann’s family: husband Chris and children Kalin, Kolten and Kilah.
John and Carrie Bellah have two children: Trapper Bellah; Katie Bellah and fiance’ Michael Ryan. It was such a joy to celebrate Mom and Dad’s 50th anniversary with a family trip to Oregon.
Mom’s legacy lies in the family she leaves behind but also in the many lives she touched through her kindness and service: a legacy of love. However, more than anything, our mom loved God, the people He created, and the world He created. She spent time every day in prayer and in her Bible, but she also expressed her love for God with her feet by going to those in need, with her hands by doing whatever work was needed, and with her ears by always being ready to listen. “Well done, you good and faithful servant. . . .”

He assisted in the start-up of Community Access Television in Salina. Nels also worked in jobs ranging from traveling for New Breeds Industries, Manhattan, Kansas, to various positions as a carpenter and designer. He also at one time owned and operated Lindsborg’s Swedish Bakery on Main Street famed for its cinnamon rolls.
Nels was also proud to have been raised to the third degree of Master Mason, the fourth generation Mason in his family. Perhaps his greatest enjoyments came from walking the pastured Smoky Hills and viewing its varied wildlife.

Ruth Ardelle "Dolly" Nelson - March 29, 1927 - October 05, 2023

Departed: 10/05/2023 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Ardelle "Dolly" Nelson passed away peacefully at age 96 on October 5, 2023, at Bethany Home in Lindsborg, Kansas with her sons Eddy and Ward by her side. She was born March 29, 1927, on the farm near Mentor, Kansas to her loving parents Edwin Forsberg and Ebba (Ringquist) Forsberg.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Ebba Forsberg, her beloved husband Darald (Mannie) Nelson, her son Brent Nelson, and her brothers Romaine, Gordon, Glenn and Kurtiss Forsberg. She is survived by her sons Edwin (Liz) Nelson of Walpole, Massachusetts, Ward Nelson of Smolan, Kansas, grandchildren Erick Nelson of Portland, Oregon, Mark (Heather) Nelson of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jon (Claudia) Nelson of Lincoln, Rhode Island, Anna Nelson of Denver, Colorado, and Alyssa (Eric) Gaede of Colby, Kansas, great-grandchildren Daniel, Maja and Mali Crawford of Hays, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.
The youngest of 5 children with 4 older brothers her dad finally had his “Dolly”, and the name stuck with her for life. She graduated from Assaria High School and worked at the Mentor Store and Elevator owned by her family as WWII raged.
On November 21, 1948, she married Darald (Mannie) Nelson of Gypsum, Kansas at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Kipp, Kansas on a day the roads had to be opened after a blizzard. She was given away by her mother Ebba as her father Edwin had passed away at age 51 when Dolly was 14. Dolly and Mannie soon bought the Algot Johnson farm ½ mile west of Smolan, Kansas where they farmed for over 60 years and raised their 3 boys Edwin (Eddy), Brent and Ward.
Life centered around the farming seasons and especially the Salemsborg Lutheran Church community. You name it and Dolly was active in it – Choir, LCW, Church Refreshment Committee, Swedish Smorgasbord, Bethany Home Auxiliary, Smoky View 4-H Club, Sewing Club, Garden Club and more. Flowers in her “Corner” on the farm gave her unending pleasure and contentment where there was always something beautiful blooming. She never ceased creating treasures useful and meaningful; rugs from her loom, embroidered tea towel sets, needlepoint pillows and applique handmade quilts all sprang from her nimble hands and fingers and still find use in many homes throughout the community.
In 2005, her husband Mannie passed away and she continued to live on the farm and help manage it with her son Ward until April 2015 when she chose to move into Bethany Home in Lindsborg. She was a resident for the final 8½ of her life and she endeared herself to the staff who provided her with exceptional and loving care. Dolly could be found contentedly reading a book in her chair surrounded by many cardinals and a wall of photos of her family. Her days were enriched with regular Zoom video calls with family members and weekly letters with memories of the farm.
Dolly was a “tough old Swede” and a woman who will be forever loved. Her kindness and selfless giving to all she knew and loved is a legacy we should all aspire to.
Funeral arrangements are through Crick- Christian Funeral Home Lindsborg, Kansas. Visitation is on Tuesday October 10 from 5-7pm at the funeral home. The funeral will be 10am, Wednesday, October 11 at Salemsborg Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Salemsborg Lutheran Cemetery.

Gerald Lee Sandbo - April 25, 1946 - September 16, 2023

Departed: 09/16/2023 (Lindsborg)
Obituary Preview: Gary was born on April 25, 1946 in Tracy, MN to Julius and Bernice (McMahon) Sandbo and big sister Alma. His father passed away when he was nine years old. After his father’s death, he had many great coaches and teachers in town that helped mentor him into the man he would become, including Leo Sebastian, Bill Bolin and Art Marben. He was a member of the Tracy Lutheran Church while growing up. His mother Bernice married Merwin Mose in 1963, Gary’s junior year of high school, who supported Gary in many different ways going forward. Gary remained very close to his mother until her passing in 1993. While attending Tracy High School, Gary sang in the choir and in the vocal quartet. He played football, basketball and baseball for the Tracy Scrappers. He was loved by classmates and was named Athlete of the Year before graduating in May of 1964, then later added to the Tracy High School Wall of Honor.
Gary attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD in the Fall of 1964 on a full ride football scholarship. He was a three year starter at quarterback, two-time all-conference, and an All-American his senior year. Additionally, he played shortstop four years for the Augustana Viking baseball team and was a terrific hitter. Gary was named the South Dakota Athlete of the Year in 1968. His accomplishments would lead to him later being inducted into the Augustana College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. During his summer breaks in college, he returned to Tracy where he worked at the swimming pool and played for the Tracy Engineers Town Baseball Team, later becoming the Engineers manager for a summer. In May 1968, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Education. He supported the college throughout his life and made several trips back to Sioux Falls to watch Augie games.
Following graduation, he was hired to teach at a junior high school in Sioux Falls. However, this was pre-empted since he was drafted into the United States Army where he served in Vietnam for eighteen months. After serving in the Army, Gary enrolled at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN. There he was an assistant football coach and obtained a Master’s Degree in Education. In the Fall of 1971, he accepted a teaching and coaching role at Walnut Grove High School in Walnut Grove, MN. He taught history and was the head football coach for the Walnut Grove Loggers. He also served as an assistant coach for the basketball team.
On June 16th, 1973, he married Suzanne Cain in Tracy, MN. The two moved to Sioux Falls in the Fall of 1973, with a teaching and coaching position at Bishop O’Gorman High School. In the Fall of 1975 he and Suzanne moved to Sioux City, IA, where he was a teacher and coach at Sioux City East High School.
In the summer of 1976, Gary and Suzanne moved to Lindsborg, KS to start a position as the offensive coordinator and head baseball coach at Bethany College. The two were head residence directors in Deere Hall and Warner Hall. During his time at Bethany, Gary taught a variety of classes and subjects within the Physical Education Department. The teams he was associated with had many successes including multiple KCAC championships and numerous NAIA playoff appearances. During their time at Bethany, they had three boys: Matt was born in 1978, Mike in 1979, and Mark in 1984. The couple attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in McPherson and joined St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church in 1988. He continued to support and follow Bethany until his passing and was inducted into the Bethany College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021, as a coach for both football and baseball.
In the summer of 1988, Gary moved to Smoky Valley High School where he taught history and served as the head football coach. His impact was felt immediately as the Vikings claimed the KSHSAA 3A State Championship in his first season as head coach. He took a great deal of pride in preparing interesting lessons for his students. Gary spent many summers working with friend and collegue Ron Dahlsten on the “painting crew” and under Ron’s leadership, became quite a meticulous painter. While at Smoky Valley, he obtained his Masters of Sport Administration from Wichita State University, which gave him the opportunity to serve as Activities Director for SVHS for eight years. He stopped coaching football after the 2002 season but returned in 2006, citing that he really missed it. The Vikings had several league, district, and regional championships on top of a state championship and state runner up finish. The lessons learned from players in the Smoky Valley program had an impact far beyond the field. In 2009, he retired from teaching and coaching.
In retirement, as an active member of St. Bridget’s of Sweden, he continued to serve as both a lector and eucharistic minister. He was involved with various other community organizations, including the Lindsborg Kiwanis Club and volunteered at The McPherson Food Bank as well as Bethany Home. Gary and Suzanne took many trips to Minnesota to visit family and friends alike in the Tracy, Minneapolis, and Sioux Falls area. Gary had a real appreciation for the arts and music and sang in The Messiah Chorus shortly after his retirement. He stayed involved in his three boy’s lives and sat nervously in the bleachers during many high school football games. In recent years on Friday nights, you could find him and Suzanne at either a Salina Central High School or McPherson High School football game, watching his sons' coach. He enjoyed attending the various activities of his eight grandchildren and was very proud to share their accomplishments with the “coffee boys.” He enjoyed reading scripture and his daily devotional, weekly bible study, daily walks, Quarterback Club, doing crossword puzzles, playing wordle and taking care of his yard. Gary loved a good book, specifically related to history, and read too many to count. He also continued to love the game of football, especially at the collegiate level. His Saturday routine was to finish yard work and then settle in his chair and watch games, and then in the evening take the two block walk up to watch the Swedes. He played lots of golf with his lifelong friend Ted Kessinger and numerous others from Lindsborg. Many ‘nickels’ changed hands during these rounds of golf.
Gary was a man of rock solid faith in God. He gave everyone around him a great example of how to live a Christian life. On June 16th, 2023, Gary and Suzanne celebrated fifty years of marriage. He was a loving husband, a great father to his three boys and a proud grandfather of his eight grandchildren.
He passed away at the age of 77 on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Salina Regional Health Center.
Survivors include his wife: Suzanne (Cain) Sandbo of the home; sons: Matt Sandbo (Laura) of McPherson, KS, Mike Sandbo (Kristy) of Wichita, KS, and Mark Sandbo (Sarah) of Salina, KS; as well as his grandchildren: Kyndall, Maryn, Audra, Madisyn, Kailyn, Easton, Mason, and Rilynn Sandbo; and many extended family members and dear friends.
