Shontique Tiana Barnes - September 24, 1985 - September 09, 2022

Departed: 09/09/2022 (Branchburg)
Obituary Preview: Thirty-seven years ago on September 24, 1985, a free spirit named Shontique Tiana Barnes entered this world. Shontique was born in Newark, NJ. She was lovingly raised by her grandmother Lucy and aunt Keisha Barnes. At the age of 13, Shontique was officially adopted by her aunt Keisha. Shontique was affectionately known as Moo-Moo by her family, which changed over to “Teek” as she matured. Shontique had a HUGE heart and enjoyed being around her family. Her energy was unmatched. She was a WHOLE VIBE! Shontique’s inquisitive nature allowed her to make friends relatively easy. For Shontique, there was no such thing as a stranger; once you were in her presence, she did whatever she could to make a connection. She learned early on to enjoy the company of those around her, and coming from a big family, there was a lot to be enjoyed!
As a child, Shontique was baptized at Emmanuel Church of Christ, DOC and was a member of the choir for several years. Although she did get the chance to attend church on a regular basis, unbeknownst to many people, Shontique was a spiritual and praying woman. She knew the power of prayer and never missed an opportunity to display her gift. In fact, she had moments when she would be in the house blasting gospel music and meditating in prayer. She grew up in and knew the power of the Word.
Growing up in Newark, Shontique attended St. Rocco’s School before moving to Union, NJ and attending Union High School. She later attended cosmetology school where she become became a certified nail technician and hair colorist. Shontique loved her family DEEPLY and would do anything for them. She knew the importance of making people laugh in tough times and with a joke, an action, or just a simple hug or kiss. She found pleasure in special moments. She was always there for the good and the bad. If you were rocking, Teek was rolling! WHEN YOU GREW UP AT 28 ARSDALE PLACE, YOU LEARNED NOTHING LESS!
On September 9, 2022 in Elizabeth, NJ, this free spirit completed her assignment in this world and found her peace. We grew up more like brothers & sisters than cousins. Per her cousin/brother Keon: “I will always love you baby sister”. Also, from cousin/brother Leon (LeeLee): “Love you cuzzo. Forever 28 born & raised”. And per cousin/brother Demetrius (Miche), “when all is said & done, we will put our backs together and go toe-to-toe with anyone. Family Over Everyone!”
Shontique will be dearly missed but always remembered in the hearts of those who loved her. She was pre-deceased by her grandparents: Lucy Barnes, Wesley Mincey, Edward Barnes, Carrie Bailey, and Wallace Bailey.
Loving memories are forever cherished by her mother, Keisha Barnes-Sauls (David Sauls) of Union, NJ; biological parents Tijuanna Barnes of Union, NJ and Terence Bailey (Jeanette) of Surry County, VA,; great-grandmother Mattie Lassiter of Newark, NJ; brothers Nigee Barnes of Riverdale, GA, Desoane Everett, Terrance Turner, Labrice Bailey, all from VA; sisters Tiffany Davis, Latoya Everett, Quita Allen, LaTia Moore, and Yasmine King, all from VA; aunts Terrell Mincey of Dover, NJ and Glenda Bailey of Smithfield, VA; uncles Idrees Weathers of Palmyra, PA, Gary Bailey and Wallace Bailey, both of Newport News, VA; great-aunts Joyce Lassiter-Skelton and Theresa Lassiter-Weems (Tommy Weems) and great-uncle, Leon Lassiter (Marjorie), all of Newark, NJ; and a host of deeply loved nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
