Joel Z. Desprez - June 08, 1956 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Joel Zank Desprez died on Sunday, April 14, 2024, surrounded by his family after what he called a “short sissy fight” with pancreatic cancer.
Joel was born June 8,1956 to Louis Willoughby Desprez and Norma Irmilla Desprez (nee Zank). Joel lived his entire life in Eau Claire, and he had a deep love for this community. He went to school a few blocks from his home, first at Arlington Heights, and later at Memorial.
When he attended Red Wing Technical College to learn string instrument repair, he still returned to Eau Claire every weekend. He operated a piano tuning business before eventually taking a job at Chippewa Valley Community Television as a camera operator. He found he loved video production, and he was good at it.
He eventually became the Executive Director, which didn’t allow a lot of time for hands-on video production, but he kept his hand in by interviewing candidates for elected office and elected policy makers.
Joel married Sandra Allard, and they had 2 boys before divorcing. Later, he married Judith Moseley who had 5 children from her previous marriage. Together they raised 7 kids in a big old farmhouse on the West side of Eau Claire. Before they knew it, the kids were graduating and moving out to lead lives of their own, adding grandchildren to the family.
When Joel’s mom passed away, Joel and Judi moved into the family home where he’d grown up. Often on the weekends, the house is still filled with kids and grandkids and the happy sounds of family.
Joel is survived by his wife, Judith Moseley; his sons William Desprez and Joseph Desprez (wife Chelsey Bauer Desprez); stepchildren Fern Moore (husband Mick Clauwaert), Joseph Hackman, Thomas Hackman, Cari Hackman Mahowald (husband Anthony Mahowald) and Robert Hackman. He is survived by three grandchildren who were the lights of his life—Jonah and Dylan Desprez and Allison Mahowald. He is also survived by his brother Louis Deprez (wife Brenda Mulry) and their daughter Johanna (husband Jacob Thebault-Spiecker), cousins Steve (wife Vicki) Zank, Norma Jo Vaillette (husband Michael Sedloff), David Vaillette and Lois Vaillette Grassl (husband David}.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents and his cousin Kurt Vaillette.
His memorial service will take place at St. John’s Lutheran Church, on Highland Avenue in Eau Claire this Saturday, April 20, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am, the service will be at noon, and there will be a luncheon in the small assembly directly afterward.
Don’t miss the luncheon, because we’ll be serving Joel’s beloved Swedish meatballs, made from his grandmother’s recipe. Joel was a talented cook, a terrific baker, and he loved feeding friends and family. He was also an accomplished musician, and at his request his service will be filled with beautiful music.

Margaret A. Brody - October 01, 1940 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Margaret A. Brody October1, 1940- April 8, 2024
Margaret Ann Brody, nee Mallach, concluded her life's journey adjusting to its share of joys and struggles. She and a twin sister, Marion, were born siblings to Robert, to their parents Frederick and Ethel Mallach, nee Amadon. The family lived at 302 S. Ninth Street. Fred was a grocer and served on the school board many terms, Ethel was an office worker, and Margaret always liked her childhood neighborhood the best. Tragedy came at the age of six when Marion passed from Margaret's life. After military service with the U.S. Air Force in Korea, Robert would marry Lois Nell and live his life in Racine. Margaret resided in Watertown most all of her life and in death was the last member of her immediate family during the period of 1905-2024.
Margaret married Frank T. Brody, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and the couple raised three sons. For forty-five years the family was at home at 409 Union Street. She was the mother of Mark, Matthew, and Andrew. She entered the workforce with Bethesda Lutheran Home as a residential aide and served that job over twenty-five years. Her husband, friend and partner, died of cancer in 2012. At the end of her life she resided in a senior facility near her granddaughters, Brittany, Ashley, and Megan, and received kind care from them. She kept the family story in her memories and was a reference to its history, especially remembering all the birthdays.
When a widowed wife, Margaret adopted the name "Maggie" and her acquaintances at this time may know her by that name. She liked to write letters, visit the hair salon, collect items from thrift stores, feed wildlife, and buy sweets. She enjoyed television, radio, newspapers, and magazines, but never learned computers. It was a pleasure for her to take public transit to Main Street Cafe and socialize over a meal. She was comforted in lighting a candle at night, and then in old age difficulties, she lit cigarettes, but overcame that habit. Four generations of her lineage were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Margaret lived well with caring support from others, for instance, she never drove a vehicle. Her nature was complex in that she had intent to challenge others and to be liked, we all managed to cope with each other as a family.
Margaret requested not to have a funeral. The family will honor her will and leave her legacy as it is in people's impressions. All in all, during the timeline of years making up her life, she was a self that conveyed love, provocative motives, and simple honesty. As she evolved in the stages of life, there was more to Margaret than met the eye, and she did it her way. Goodbye, Margaret, thanks again. You will be remembered by family relatives and friends in the community.

Betty J. Nolting - September 07, 1934 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: The Obituary of Betty Jean Nolting
Romans 6:4-5 We were therefore buried with him by this baptism into his death, so that just as he was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too would also walk in a new life. For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united with him in the likeness of his resurrection.
Betty Jean, God's precious gift to John Frey and his wife Katie nee Sittner, was born in White Butte, SD on September 7, 1934. She was the seventh in a family of "3 and a half-dozen kids" (3 boys and a half dozen girls). She was united in Christ's death and His Resurrection through baptism on September 30, 1934, in White Butte, SD.
She lived on the family’s farm near White Butte until 1941 when the family moved to a farm near Morristown, SD where she completed grade school. She attended church regularly with her family and in 1948 was confirmed in the Christian faith. Because her parents made Christian education a high priority, Betty and her 8 siblings all attended high school at Northwestern Lutheran Academy in Mobridge.
1 Corinthians 15:3b-4 Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, he was buried, he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
Betty worked for the telephone company as a switchboard operator during and following high school. Shortly thereafter the Lord blessed her with the gift of a Christian husband, Norman Oster, whom she met while attending high school. They were married on June 14, 1953, and together established a Christ-centered home, farming near Buchanan, ND where they raised their 8 sons. In 1977, due to Norman’s declining health, they moved to Eau Claire, compelled to have all their children attend Immanuel Lutheran High School to strengthen their love for their Savior. On November 17, 1986, the Savior kept His promise and granted Norman the gift of eternal life. During the years that followed Betty expanded her Bible teaching at home to include teaching Sunday School, teaching Vacation Bible School, and 4 years of teaching kindergarten at Messiah Lutheran School in Eau Claire. On June 21, 1992, the LORD added the gift of another Christian husband when she and Pastor Paul F. Nolting were married. Together, they shared the Word of God in their Christ-centered marriage until the Lord Jesus also gave Paul the gift of eternal life on March 22, 2005.
John 10:27-28 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.
In addition to learning about and sharing the message of the Good Shepherd, Betty enjoyed quilting, playing Scrabble, and spending time with her children, 34 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren.
The LORD blessed her with good health for most of her life and she was able to live on her own, before moving to Heatherwood Assisted Living in June 2019. She continued to attend church services faithfully with her family until about 4 weeks ago, when her health began to deteriorate. The Savior then gave Betty the same special gift of eternal life. She died peacefully on April 6th surrounded by a number of her family members. Her earthly pilgrimage was 89 years, 6 months, and 30 days. Her body will be cremated and placed at Forest Hill Cemetery where it awaits its resurrection, guaranteed by the Savior's Resurrection. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even if he dies.” Betty was preceded in death by:
Her parents, her husband Norman Oster, her husband Paul F. Nolting, daughter Ruth Ahrens, brother Harold and wife Millie, brother Alfred and wife Vera Jean, brother Norman and wife Ella, sister Doris Kurth, sister Dorothy and husband Donald Rabenberg, sister Kathryn and husband John Hinker, sister Barbara and husband Alfred Hamre, brother-in-law Bob Hamre, sisters-in-law Irma Wamhoff, Erna Smith, Viona Seals, and Delora Tarno. Yet in their time of grace to study the Scriptures and learn of Jesus their Savior: Her son Glenn and wife Harriet of Lexington, SC and their 3 children and 11 grandchildren Her son Dennis and wife Chris of Eau Claire and their 3 daughters and 10 grandchildren Her son Dave and wife Mary of Sioux Falls, SD and their 2 sons Her son Jon Oster of Eau Claire Her son Dan and wife Kelley of Dallas, TX Her son Phil and wife Cheryl of San Juan Capistrano, CA and their 2 children and 3 grandchildren Her son Darin and wife Kathy of Eau Claire and their 8 children and 6 grandchildren Her son Gerald and wife Anya of Eau Claire and their 4 children and 7 grandchildren Her son-in-law Dennis Ahrens and wife Carol of Valentine, NE and their 4 daughters and 6 grandchildren Her daughter Sue and husband Steve Lentz of Eau Claire and their 2 children and 4 grandchildren Her son Paul Nolting and wife Sara of Valentine, NE and their 4 children and 15 grandchildren Her daughter Beth and husband Mark Kranz of Eau Claire and their 2 sons and 1 granddaughter Her sister Margie and husband Elmer Wagner Her brother-in-law Bob Kurth Her sister-in-law Gladys Schulz
And a great number of relatives in the extended family and many friends in her church family. John 11:26 (Jesus said] "And whoever lives and believes in me will never perish. Do you believe this?"
A Victory Service for Betty is planned for 4:00 pm Friday, April 12, 2024 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, followed by a celebration meal in the church Fellowship Hall. A memorial visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A private Committal Service with the family will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Messiah Lutheran Church and designated CLC Project Kinship or Immanuel Lutheran College Building Fund,
or given to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Heatherwood Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for their loving support and for the tender care they showed for Betty.

Joanne Marie Knaack - May 27, 1944 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Joanne Marie Knaack (Lierman) passed away surrounded by her biggest fans (her family) on April 1, 2024. Joanne was born to Milton O. and Alpha M. (Blicher) Lierman May 27, 1944. Growing up, Joanne learned the importance of hard work, dedication, and how to find the positive in everything. Her mother, Alpha, passed down her heart of gold to Joanne, who used it every day of her life.
On June 19, 1965, Joanne married David Knaack at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Menomonie, WI. Always laughing, and always believing that life was too short to not chase out an adventure, Dave and Joanne were a truly remarkable pair. This zest for life remained constant, even after the birth of their four kids, Dennis, Denise, Brad, and Chad. The incredible twosome became the dynamic group of six, traveling, fishing, and even getting their hands dirty to help build the houses that they lived in.
In addition to spending time as a family, Joanne loved to play softball and bowl with her teammates turned closest friends. She was always active, outgoing, and never failed to provide a soft place to land for anyone looking to feel included and accepted.
Her kind heart was utilized daily as an anesthesia tech for Sacred Heart Hospital, and eventually Oakleaf Surgical Hospital. Her colleagues and past patients remember her for her work ethic, her compassion…and her humor too! Joanne would blow up surgical gloves into balloons, draw faces on them, and give them to patients waiting for surgery. Not only did this provide a laugh for nervous patients, but it showed Joanne’s true character and sense of humor.
Joanne’s true loves of her life were her kids and her grandkids (fur-grandkids included!). Joanne never missed a dance competition, a volleyball game, a hockey game, a school play, or any other event that her grandkids were a part of. She became the bonus grandma for all of the kids on the sports teams, even sporting team gear year-round to show how proud she was. If her kids or grandkids ever needed anything, Joanne was there, without question. She lived for her family, and it was evident in everything that she did.
In addition to spending time with her family, Joanne loved to play cards, Bananagrams, Skip Bo, and any other kind of game that she was challenged to-especially the annual cutthroat Spoons battle around the holidays. Even if she didn’t quite understand the rules, she was right there with a smile on her face, being the steadfast cheerleader for the people she was playing with. Joanne also loved to spend time up at the lake in the summertime. She loved to fish, go out for dinner with friends, go on casino runs, and go on road trips. It was never a question of ‘if’ grandma was coming with on an adventure. It was a matter of ‘when’ she would be ready to go. Joanne was such an integral piece of anything and everything that her family did. Her presence being as valuable and necessary as a heartbeat, her passing has left her family manifesting her memory into a way to get our hearts beating again.
Joanne is survived by her husband, Dave; three sons, Dennis (Lynn), Brad (Lorie), Chad (Keri) Knaack. She is also survived by her daughter, Denise (Steve) Tape; two brothers, Vaughn (Lucy) Lierman, and Richard (Rayola) Lierman; seven grandchildren, Jennica (Sawyer) Fumelle, Courtney Schoenberger, Sydney Tape, August Knaack, Aza Knaack Logan Knaack, and Addison Knaack; and by so many friends and family members that thought the world of her.
Joanne was proceeded in death by her parents; her father-in-law; her mother-in-law; Herb and Geri Knaack; sister, Marilyn Lierman; and her son-in-law, Willie Schoenberger.
Joanne’s family cannot thank the Mayo Hospital 3rd floor doctors, nurses, and staff for taking such incredible care of Joanne. They were nothing short of incredible, and we will be forever grateful for giving her the kind of care that everyone should receive when they reach their end of life.
While Joanne may be physically gone, her presence will be present for every new memory made. A soul that kind and that bright could never truly leave us.
Funeral Services will be held at 7 PM on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 with visitation being held from 3-7 PM all at Chippewa Valley Cremation Services - Celebration of Life Center in Altoona.
