Marie Gregory - July 31, 1926 - June 26, 2021

Departed: 06/26/2021 (Broadview)
Obituary Preview: A link to access the live stream funeral service will be made available on this page Thursday, July 8th at 10am. Reflection of Life
Mrs. Marie Gregory was born from the union of Lila Booth and Johnny Hawkins on July 31, 1926, in Oxford, North Carolina. She received her education in the Granville County North Carolina school district.
Marie always had a zest for life, travelling the country in her 20’s with friends and socializing, even earning first place honors in “Lindy Hop” competitions. Her beauty, winning smile and gift for gab was always a showstopper. She owned any room she walked in.
Widowed at an early age with an eight-year-old son to raise, Marie met Navy veteran Moses William Gregory (Greg) at a church service in Oxford (he joked it was her beautiful legs that caught his attention!). They married June 10, 1957, and she and her son Stanley moved to Chicago. Greg and Stanley formed an immediate and lasting “father and son” bond until Stanley’s passing in 1965. Marie never forgot her husband’s devotion to Stanley and returned that affection by serving as Greg’s primary caregiver throughout his illness. They were married over 40 years until his passing in 2002. As a result of their union, Sonya was born.
Marie started her career at Chicago’s Sears, Roebuck and Company, where her gregarious personality served her well beginning on the retail floor and moving to customer service. She eventually moved to the building formerly known as The Sears Tower, where she became a well-known and beloved presence until her retirement in the mid 1990’s.
Marie accepted Christ in her life at an early age, and always knew her strength came from Him. She joined New Alpha Progressive Baptist Church in 1976 and served faithfully in various capacities including the First Aid Board, the Mother’s Board and wherever she was needed. Her spiritual connection to New Alpha never wavered and was one of the most joyful areas of her life.
Fashion conscious and sassy coupled with a wit well that never ran dry, Marie never strayed from her core. The Arden Courts of South Holland Community, Marie’s caretakers, spoke highly of her insistence on wearing her lifelong staples – lots of jewelry that dangles and red lipstick. Yet while fashion and beauty were essential, she never ceased to remind her daughter “Pretty is as does.” It was these and so many other “Missives by Ms. Marie” that Sonya holds dear and will pass to the next generation.
On Saturday June 26, 2021, God quietly welcomed Marie to His kingdom. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Sonya Gregory-Hayes; son-in-law Roosevelt Hayes, Jr.; brother Julius Hawkins; grandchildren Lauren, Nicole, and Jessica; great-grandchildren Aria, Skylar, Scarlet and Anastacia; the Arden Courts of South Holland Community, the Hayes family and a host of other extended family and friends

Departed: 06/23/2021 (Broadview)
Obituary Preview: Celebration of Life August 13, 1939 – June 23, 2021
Edna Chamois Francis transitioned from this life on earth, June 23, 2021 at the age of (81) to begin her eternal life in Heaven with the Lord.  Edna was born August 13, 1939 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana to Edward Chamois and Ethel (Chamois) Hutchinson who preceded her in death, one brother Edward Chamois also born to this union preceded her in death.  Edna accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age.
Edna lived a full life, loving the city of New Orleans, Louisiana in which she was born.  She spent her career at Torou Hospital; Foucher St, New Orleans, LA as a Register Nurse. Edna actively attended the Zulu Balls each year during Mardi Gras. To say the least Edna loved football (New Orleans Saints) team of choice. She would adamantly jump up and down in the house ringing a cow’s bell as they made touch-downs.  She loved traveling around the world with her mother, aunts and cousins on various cruises. After retiring she purchased the medallion needed to start her own cab service.
In August 2005, Katrina Hurricane hit the City of New Orleans which devastated the city. Edna evacuated the city she loved to hang out in Texas until the storm was over. To her surprise she ended up in Bellwood, Illinois to live with her daughter during that time.  During her stay in Illinois she joined the Rock of Ages Baptist Church in Maywood, IL.  She joined the Golden Ladies and Gents Senior Club in Chicago, and Sharp Community Center in Melrose Park, where she loved playing “Bingo “until her health began to fail.
Edna leaves to cherish her memory: (daughter) Wanda Certain-Lee; (son) George Randle Certain (wife) Ann B. Certain; (son) Edward Daniel Certain and Ray Certain, who preceded her in death. (grand-daughters) Anitra Certain; Tomeka Farmer, Deanna Certain and Shanita Certain; (grandson) Ivan Smith; great-grandsons (Aaron Certain, Amarion Certain, Davion Farmer, Malaki Farmer
and one precious (great-great granddaughter) Mielle Certain; God-daughter Diane (one) uncle and a host of great grandchildren, cousins, relatives and friends.
She fought a good fight, finished her course, and kept the faith. “Shop in Heaven’s Grocery Store”
I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago.
One day saw a sign that read Heaven’s Grocery Store. As I got a little closer, the door came open wide,
And when I came to myself, I was standing inside. I saw a host of angels; they were standing everywhere And one angel said, “My child shop with care.”
Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store. And all you couldn’t carry you could come back the next day for more
First, I got some patience, love was in the same row.
Further down was understanding, you need that everywhere you go.
I got a box or two of wisdom, a bag or two of faith. I just couldn’t miss the Holy Ghost for
He was all over the place.
I stopped to get some strength and courage to help me run the race.
By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered I needed some grace .I didn’t forget salvation, for salvation that was free.
So, I tried to get enough of that to save you and me.
Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill.
For I thought I had everything to do my master’s will.
As I went up the aisle, I saw prayer and just had to put that in.
For I knew when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin.
Peace and joy were plentiful, they were on the last shelf.
Song and praises were hanging near so I just helped myself. Then, I said now how much do I owe?
He just smiled and said, just take them everywhere you go. How much do I really owe?
He smiled and said, my child, Jesus paid your bill a long time ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the deceased's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to facilitate the grieving process by allowing loved ones to share memories and condolences.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers.

Who writes an obituary?

The obituary is usually written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to write a comprehensive and meaningful obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. Many people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or end-of-life preparations.
