Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to attend funeral services, send condolences, or make donations in memory of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer may be a family member, close friend, or someone who was close to the deceased.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually concise, ranging from 50 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and provide a visual representation of the deceased.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries, while others may require you to visit their office in person.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituaries as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and accomplishments.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while traditional newspapers may charge several hundred dollars for a single publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online obituaries can often be edited or updated by contacting the platform's customer support team.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately after submission, while traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. You might instead mention that a private ceremony will be held or that memorial donations can be made in lieu of flowers.
