She is also survived by her siblings, Floyd, Brenda, Stewart, Michael and Judy. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her parents, Floyd and Ruth Meaux; her brother, Johnny Meaux; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dora and Emerson Simmons; her brother-in-law D.D. Simmons; and her great grandson, Luke Wheeler, who all rest in the Lord. Martha was first and foremost a teacher. She graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana University (now the University of Louisiana Lafayette) in vocational home economics, but soon became a special education teacher. She specialized in the teaching and evaluation of the visually impaired. She taught at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired for more than 30 years and had a unique ability to recognize what each child needed in order to provide them with the learning tools needed to succeed in life. She loved providing her visually impaired students with life experiences outside of the classroom as well, bringing groups to her house for hayrides, interactions with horses, and vegetable picking in the garden. She received a master's degree plus many certifications in the assessment of visually and multiply impaired children in order to provide her students with the best instruction possible. She was tops in her field in the United States and traveled the world speaking at conferences for the Association
of Education and Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired.
The joys of her life were her grandchildren and then, great grandchildren. She especially loved making "Granny" Christmas something to look forward to and remember each and every year. Ever the teacher, she was constantly imparting life lessons along the way, as well as making her time with them so much fun. Upon her retirement, if Martha wasn't taking care of grandchildren, she could be found almost daily with her other family at St. John Catholic Church in Zachary. She spent countless hours serving, mentoring and giving of her time and talents in service to others.
Visitation for Martha will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Zachary on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 11:00 am until Mass at 1:00 pm. If desired, donations can be made to the Affiliated Blind of Louisiana Training Center, 409 W. St. Mary Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70506.
