Obituary Preview: Gerald Courtright, 72, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, on the 49th anniversary of his marriage to his wife, Marcia. Jerry was born November 27, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late Vol and Mary C. (Tilmann) Courtright. He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1966 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving in Vietnam from 1968-1969. On June 12, 1971, he married Marcia L. Robinson at St. Francis Catholic Church in Muskegon. Jerry was a dental lab tech and owned and operated Courtright Dental Lab for 49 years. Devoutly Catholic, Jerry was an active member of Sacred Heart Church. He led a men’s Bible Study on Saturday Mornings since 2009, served as sacristan, and sang in the church choir for decades. He was a quiet, kind and humble man who enjoyed fly-fishing and making wine. He loved his church and adored his family, especially his grandchildren. Jerry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marcia; two sons and their wives, Ben and Laura Courtright of Mt. Pleasant and Peter and Sarah Courtright of Philadelphia, PA; his beautiful grandchildren, Andrew, Catherine, Elizabeth, Stephen and Teresa, and Sophia, Solomon, and one to be born in July; and his siblings, Susanne (William) Fanning of Rockford, Nancy (Richard) Sloss of Florida, William (Barb) Courtright of Clare, and Marilyn Shafer of Holland. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Miles in 2016; and nephews, Jason Shafer, David Shafer, and Joseph Courtright. A public Funeral Mass for Jerry will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski as celebrant and Jerry’s godson, Father Stephen Blaxton, as homilist. All those attending the Mass are required to wear face masks. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Friday one hour prior to Mass. Rite of Committal and military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Sacred Heart Academy Foundation or the Seminary Fund through the Diocese of Saginaw. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home or at the church prior to Mass.

Obituary Preview: Charles Woodthorp, 97, of Blanchard passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, at Masonic Pathways in Alma. He was born June 1, 1923, in Bancroft, Michigan, son of the late Charles and Pearl (Cortrite) Woodthorp. He married Phyllis Arlene Wilson on June 20, 1947, in Owosso, Michigan. Charles was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and fought in WWII. He worked for General Motors for 30 years on the repair floor in Flint. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, square dancing, playing cards and dominoes, and snowmobiling. He was a handyman and could fix almost anything. He loved his tractor, loved farming with both machinery and horses. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Charles was a people person and had hundreds of friends. He had a big heart, was a big tease and put others first. For example, he and good friend Max Berry created a mobile kitchen to feed hundreds of volunteers at Kingdom Hall construction projects throughout Michigan. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1950. He enjoyed teaching others about the Bible’s promise of a wonderful future. He was confident our loving heavenly Father will resurrect him in due time to enjoy life again with health and youth. Charles is survived by his wife Phyllis Arlene; sons, Walter (Lois) Woodthorp of Wisconsin, Jerry (Deb) Woodthorp of Davison, Randy (Mary) Woodthorp of Wyandotte, and Chris (Cindy) Woodthorp of Blanchard; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; and his sister, Annabelle Allen. The family will hold a private memorial service on Friday, July 10, 2020 at 2 P.M. with Brian Thompson officiating. The service will be streamed live and will be available on Charles’ tribute page on the funeral home website.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at 1 p.m., at Beagios (5957 State St., Kingston, MI 48741). Robert was born July 29, 1961 in St. Claire, Michigan son of Robert and Barbara (Wenzlaff). He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1979 and continued his education by receiving a bachelor’s in education from Central Michigan University. He spent 16 years with the Montabella School district as a math and alternative education teacher. He loved to play baseball. He played and coached in adult leagues for over 30 years. In 2018 he was inducted into the Gratiot County Men’s Baseball League Hall of Fame. After baseball, Robert was excited to join in the “pit” of Chad Raby’s racing team. Robert is survived by his mother, Barbara Sullivan of Mt. Pleasant; son, Robert (Anne) Sullivan II of Wyoming; grandchildren, Rory and Eli Sullivan; sisters, Terry Sullivan of Barryton, Michelle (Chuck Marshall) Sullivan of Lake Isabella, and Christine (Guy Walter) Sullivan of Gobles. He wass preceded in death by his father, Robert Sullivan; brother, James Sullivan; and children Andrew and Nathan Sullivan. Edward Larue McQuaid - April 28, 1948 - May 24, 2020

Obituary Preview: Edward McQuaid, 72, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020, at home with his family by his side. He was born April 28, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late Thurman F. and Edwardine K. (Murphy) McQuaid. He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1967 and was a member of the 1967 Class C State Champions in basketball. After attending Northwood College for two years, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 21, serving from 1969-1971 during Vietnam. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion 25th Infantry Division ‘Wolfhounds’, the 1st Aviation Brigade ‘Goldenhawks’ and the 282nd Assault Helicopter Company ‘Blackcats’. In I Corp, Ed flew in the largest assault in the Vietnam War (Lamsam 719) into Laos from Kasha Base Corp I. 30 days before leaving Vietnam, Ed and his crew were force-landed and safely retrieved 30 minutes later, Amen! Upon his return to Mt. Pleasant he attended Central Michigan University before being hired by General Telephone as a technician. On December 12, 1980, Ed married Robin A. Owen in Mt. Pleasant. He retired in 2009 (after 38 years) to spend more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Ed’s exposure to agent orange in Vietnam had long-term effects leading to three open-heart surgeries and a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Ed is survived by his wife of 40 years, Robin McQuaid; four children, Eddie (Cesre) McQuaid of Haines, AK, Eric (Melissa) McQuaid of Mt. Pleasant, and Michelle McQuaid (Algernon Bonner) and Stephanie McQuaid, both of Kennesaw, GA; six grandchildren, Paigelyn and Addison, Miles, Finnegan, and Madelyn, and Cooper; sister, Susan (Jim) Graham of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Edwardine McQuaid; and siblings, Cecelia McQuaid, Alice ‘Annie’ McQuaid, and Thurman ‘Fred’ McQuaid Jr. At Ed’s request, he has been cremated. Those that are able may attend his service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Deacon Larry Fussman officiating. Covid-19 restrictions require that each individual wear a facemask during the service and adhere to social distancing. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service begins at 11 a.m. The family plans to contribute to a local veteran service organization in memory of Ed. Those planning an expression of sympathy may make donations to the family (payable to Robin McQuaid). Envelopes will be available at the church on the day of the service or at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home.

She was employed as a dental assistant to Dr. William Fortino, DDS for 20 years. In addition, she worked alongside her husband, Jack, at their business, Jack’s Amoco Station in Weidman. Nancy was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and volunteered on the funeral luncheon committee by calling and asking fellow parishioners for a dish to pass. She enjoyed reading, loved animals, and had a strong interest in criminal justice as well as locating former classmates. Nancy is survived by her daughter, Janet (John) Putvin of Cadillac; in-laws, Phyllis Ahlers of Mt. Pleasant, Brenda Theisen of Lake, William (Joyce) Theisen of Mt. Pleasant, Mary Sproule of Davison, Eugene (Janet) Theisen of Mt. Pleasant, Rita (Bruce) Cline of Marshall, Pauline (Steve) Thomas of Lainsburg, and Pat (Sue) Theisen of DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack Theisen in 2013; and brothers in-law, Hank Ahlers, Tom Theisen and Robert Sproule. Nancy will be laid to rest in a private service at Calvary Cemetery. Ann is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bob; and they were blessed with three children, Phyllis (Bill) Scott of Lake Isabella, Karen Chapin of Shepherd, and Robert (Beth) Laraway of Houston TX; siblings, Mary Evans of Detroit, Joyce Archambault of Saginaw, Rose Cole of Ohio, Carol Dart of Monroe, Bertha (Wayne) Rinehart of Ohio and John (Carol) Zimmerman of Temperence; seven grandchildren, Lizzi, Billy, Kimberly, Kendra, Bryan, Scott and Cole; great grandson, Matthew; and many nieces and nephews. Pleasant, son of the late Philip Richard and Mary Louise (Eisman) Epple. He attended grade school at St. Henry Catholic School in Rosebush before graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in 1959. He attended Ferris State University from 1961-1965 (and 1973-1974) and Michigan State University from 1965-1968. From 1968-1970 he served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers from 1968-1970, during Vietnam. Frank was employed by the Michigan Department of Transportation from 1960-1997. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, the Knights of Columbus, had his pilot’s license, and, at one time, owned a plane. Frank is survived by three siblings, Susan Epple of Holt, John (Pam) Epple of Troy and Jean Epple of Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, M. Catherine Epple. A private Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and will be streamed live from Frank’s tribute page on the funeral home’s website. Father Loren Kalinowski will celebrate. Private burial will be in River Lawn Cemetery in Denver Township with military honors. Pleasant; grandchildren, Brett Lackie, Rachel Lackie, Todd (Lacey) Gepford, Tony Gepford, Theresa (Tyler) Todd, Claire Doty, Sterling Gepford, Dylan Gittus, and Cole Gittus; three great grandchildren with another due in July; siblings, Ronald Cotter of Weidman, John ‘Jack’ Cotter of Florida, Larry (Karol) Cotter of Weidman, Mary Kay (Arnnie) Price of Mt. Joan was born on June 12, 1926, in Detroit, to Charles F. and Mabel (Keast) Bishop. She graduated from Pershing High School and later married Roy R. Reynolds on March 14, 1953. She worked for Ford Motor Company prior to her marriage and relocation to California. Joan and Roy moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1973 when Roy joined the faculty at Central Michigan University. Joan was a very active community leader and volunteer; most notably as a member of the Central Michigan Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy in 1999 and her daughter Lynne in March of 2020. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, George Bishop and Betty Ragan. She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Brian) MacAskill of Flushing and Dianne (Doug) McClintic of Debrecen, Hungary; four grandchildren, Amanda (Jerry) Masters of Lansing, Brain Byrnes of Portland, OR, Katherine (Caleb) McClintic-Wiese of New York, NY, and Stephen McClintic of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Edgar (Joyce) Bishop and Ronald Bishop; and many nieces and nephews. Gerald is survived by his; daughter, Diane Crandell of Texas; son, Brian Burgess of Virginia; five grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna in 1987; and his loving companion of many years, Jean Beiske in 2018. Per Gerald’s wishes, cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred on a later date in Chippewa Lake Cemetery, next to his loving wife.
