Joan Ellen Smith - August 29, 1951 - March 19, 2024

Departed: 03/19/2024 (Yarmouth)
Obituary Preview: Joan E. (Abbott) Smith of West Yarmouth passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on March 19, 2024.
She was survived by her loving husband Alfred Smith of 53 years, her daughter, Christine Smith, and husband Jonathan Smith. Son, Jason Smith, and wife Karen Smith of Assonet. Her cherished grandchildren Jonathan Smith and wife Tristan Smith of Texas, Anthony Smith of North Carolina, Ashley and Allyson Smith of Assonet, great grandchildren, Juliet, Trevor, and Hunter Smith of Texas. Sister Jennifer Slovak and husband Peter Slovak. Brother George Abbott and his wife Jan Hemon Abbott of Barnstable, and several nieces and nephews and her furry friends, Ellie and Zoe. Joan was predeceased by her mother Joan Devine Abbott.
Joan was born on August 29, 1951 in New York City and moved to Cape Cod as a young child and grew up in South Yarmouth. She went to D-Y High School and met her loving husband Alfred Smith of 53 years.
They had two children, Christine, and Jason. She worked alongside her husband at their business of over 50 years at the H&R Block Tax office in South Yarmouth. Joan loved to travel, her favorite places were Sanibel Island, taking amazing cruises, and taking her grandchildren to Disney.
She was part of the Massachusetts Hockey Association for over 40 years. She loved the sport of hockey, watching her children play, then watching her grandchildren play, and going to her son’s college games that he was coaching, were some of her favorite things to do.
The most precious things in her life were her family. Her sister Jennifer, even though they were 18 years apart, were as close as two sisters could be. She was so proud of her children. Then came the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would just light up when she saw them or spoke about them. She hated to go even for a day without talking to or seeing them.
The love she had was so strong, you could see it in her eyes for her husband Al. They spent every day together, an amazing couple.
Joan was also the most generous person. If you needed something she would make sure you had it, no matter what. We were all so lucky to have her in our lives.
She will be missed, at the front desk of the tax office, the hockey rinks all over New England and to the sands of Sanibel Island, FL, …and most of all, at our kitchen table.

Alan Hobbs - December 17, 1928 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Yarmouth)
Obituary Preview: Alan Hobbs December 17, 1928 – February 16, 2024
Alan Hobbs, 95, passed away on February 16, 2024 – with dignity, surrounded by family, and in the comfort of the West Yarmouth home he loved so dearly and shared so generously.
Alan was born on December 17, 1928, in Beckenham, England, one month after Mickey Mouse made his debut. The son of Adelaide and Arthur Hobbs, he spent his childhood evading and collecting shrapnel from German bombers that flew over his London neighborhood during World War II. Decades later, he described the life-changing experience of going through a war to his children and grandchildren.
During his service in the Royal Navy, Alan learned to build, repair and service airplanes. His keen understanding of how things work enabled him to build a house and a boat for his family in Westerham. He embarked on a career in the filtration industry – setting the stage for a bold move that would bear fruit in the decades (and century) to come.
Alan met Shirley King at the local swimming pool in Beckenham during the war, and they married in 1952. The couple moved to America in 1970 with their daughters, Angela and Claire. They landed in Dighton, MA, then moved to Scranton, PA. Alan’s career took him throughout North America until he retired in 1995.
In 1984, Shirley and Alan began living their dream on Cape Cod. They enjoyed sailing and other seaside activities, as well as a succession of Labrador retrievers. Their West Yarmouth home was a welcome place for neighbors, friends and family – including visitors from Great Britain. After 61 years of a marriage that was considered a model by most who knew them, Shirley passed away in 2013.
Alan is survived by sister Alison Macrory of Dumfries, Scotland; daughter Claire Shaw and husband John in West Yarmouth; daughter Angela Schobel and husband Robert in Glenburn, PA; grandchildren Jeremy Schobel, Ian Schobel, Colin Shaw, Tristan Shaw and James Shaw; two great-grandchildren; and three generations of nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Great Britain.
A beloved, influential member of the West Yarmouth Congregational Church, Alan served as president for three years. An avid sailor into his 80s, he resurrected and captained the Phoenix, which provided first mate Shirley, as well as family and friends, with countless memorable hours exploring the waters of their adopted Cape.
Average in size, Alan had substantial presence. Stoic and reserved (incurably British), he was loved by more people than most – despite his vocal desire to be left alone. A loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather, Alan lived a dignified and purposeful life. He passed away on his terms with dignity and will be missed by those who were privileged to know him.
May we all be blessed with a life as full as the one led by Alan Hobbs. To draw people so effortlessly towards you, to display so clearly a sense of purpose, and to grow in stature in the eyes of your family and friends are no small feats. Kind, generous, patient, helpful, steadfast and trustworthy, Alan had a sharp, dry sense of humor. His life inspires a glowing legacy for those who knew him best – his family, who lovingly recalled:
Alan Hobbs was a spectacular man. He often said, “All I want is a quiet life.”
He found joy in his routines, the clockwork of his life.
He taught me the value of working hard and how to carry myself.
My grandfather was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. When it didn’t sound like a joke, he would say, “I’m just pulling your leg.”
His life ended as he lived each day, with a smile on his face and calling the shots.
A celebration of the life of Alan Hobbs is being planned for Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at the West Yarmouth Congregational Church. The service is live streamed, as well as archived for later viewing.
