Janet Constance Parker - April 09, 1934 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: Janet G. Parker, age 89, died January 16, in Stockton, California. A native of California, Janet was born in Oakland, and grew up in the East Bay. She lived most of her life in California, with the exception of earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah and residing in Laie, Hawaii while her late husband, John Carlyle Parker, worked as librarian at Church College of Hawaii (later BYU-Hawaii).
She was a long-term resident of Turlock (47 years) and more recently, Stockton (13 years).
Janet was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Janet loved it from the first day she attended, when she was four or five years old, and continued to love the Church all her life. She served in many callings--including leadership, teaching positions, and sharing her musical talents of singing, directing choral and instrumental music, writing music for a road show, and serving as music chair at the ward or stake level. The chair positions provided opportunities to help young musicians learn and participate in worship through music, and to serve as a mentor to young and old. She served fourteen years as a family history center library assistant. She also taught genealogy classes--not only at church, but at Modesto Junior College. All this, except at MJC, as a volunteer, much to her personal enrichment and joy. She was a mother first and later began a career as a teacher, after earning a teaching credential at California State College, Stanislaus (now CSU, Stanislaus). After teaching at a Turlock school for five years, in her words, "I resigned to stay at home with the children I loved best. My joy was being a Mom. Nothing I have done in my life compares to my beloved role as mother."
Other joys and hobbies included gardening, birding, writing, genealogy, traveling, attending concerts of chamber, choral, or symphonic music, or playing the violin. She was an avid letter writer. As a youth she corresponded with pen pals in Japan and Turkey. She kept in touch with her children writing letters as they were away at college or serving missions in Italy, Japan, or Ecuador. As a mature adult she shifted from letter writing to sending email; this activity allowed her to keep in touch with college roommates or friends made during travels.
Janet loved to travel with her children and husband and visited many places around the world.
Janet was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Through access to that organization's library she discovered answers to genealogical research mysteries that bore fruit in friendships with others. Another opportunity to meet people and participate in purposeful research of family history was her participation in the Woodmansee Project, beginning in 1988, culminating in the publication in 2009 of a two-volume set about Woodmansee families in America.
Throughout her life, Janet recognized grace in exchanges of kindness; whether through people at church, neighbors, or strangers, she noted plentiful examples of people coming to her aid or she and Carlyle lending aid to others--stories that she told because of the joy they brought her, not with any intention of boasting.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John Carlyle Parker, and a son, Nathan Carlyle Parker, her parents and sisters, Carol and Judy. She is survived by her brother, Ron, a daughter, Denise Paxton, and Bret; 12 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
Thanks to all the caregivers who tended Janet in her times of need.
Services will be Saturday, January 27, at 7030 N. El Dorado St, Stockton, CA at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, viewing at 10:00am, funeral at 11:00am; burial at Cherokee Memorial Park, 14165 Beckman Rd, Lodi, CA at 1:00pm.
Remembrances may be made to Heifer International, also known as Heifer Project (heifer.org) or Humanitarian Aid Fund, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (https://donate.churchofjesuschrist.org/contribute/church/humanitarian-services?cid=MemoriaHumanitarian).

Graciana V Leyva - June 04, 1934 - October 04, 2023

Departed: 10/04/2023 (Stockton)
Obituary Preview: Heaven has a new beautiful angel. On October 4th, 2023, we lost our matriarch and beloved grandmother, Graciána Leyva, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family.
She was born on June 4th, 1934 in the small town of Penjamillo de Ocampo de Michoacán. Her parents, Joaquin Valencia and Socorro Gonzalez, siblings Soledad, Rafael, Maria de Refugio, and Agurelia adored her and will miss her dearly.
She taught her family the importance of hard work, family and dreaming big. At the young age of six, she began working in the fields, taking care of her siblings and helping in the kitchen. At the age of fifteen, she met the love of her life and married Manuel Leyva. Together they began their life in Penjamillo, raising their beautiful children: Manuel, Rafael, Ramon, Jesus, Socorro, Rosa, María, and Arturo. Eventually migrating to the United States and setting roots in Stockton, California giving birth to her youngest daughter Graciela.
In the US, she worked in the fields alongside her husband, picking cherries, grapes and tomatoes. Working hard each day to reach the goal of owning their own business. Proudly entering the restaurant scene and becoming owners of the downtown landmark, Xochimilco Cafe for more than 50 years, working side by side many children and grandchildren.
Her happiest moments were when the family was all together. Her home was the place of many gatherings for the family, where her 21 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren have the fondest memories of their beloved Ama or Abuelita, with food being at the center of many visits. They always knew a day visiting Ama involved food and shopping, two of her favorite past times. When she wasn’t tending to her family, you could find her in their restaurant kitchen making fresh flour tortillas.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she will be missed greatly. Her memory will last forever as all of us will always carry a little piece of her in us. The love, values, memories and traditions she instilled in her family will echo for generations to come. May your wings in heaven be as vibrant as the love you showed on earth!

How do I handle conflicting opinions within the family when writing an obituary?

In cases where there are differing opinions within the family, try to find common ground and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on disagreements. If necessary, consider seeking mediation from a trusted third party or counselor.
