William Sanderson JR. - March 17, 1950 - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: SSG William Henry Sanderson, Jr, Ret USAF, went to be with the Lord on February 4, 2024. He went to heaven surrounded in love by his family; his beloved wife, Chrya C., sons, Sherman S. and William A. Sanderson, and daughter, Yonna S. Sanderson. He is preceded in death by his parents, William H. Sanderson Sr., and Dorothy Downs of Louisville, KY, grandson, Devan Busby, and his uncle and aunt, Cobert Jr. and Mary Jane Depp of Glasgow, KY.
William joined the US Air Force in 1969. He spent time in Okinawa, Japan and came back to the US. While stationed at Davis Mountain Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, he met and married his wife, Chrya C. Sanderson. On February 18th, the couple would have been married 52 years. After marrying in 1972, William transitioned to Eielson AFB, Alaska. It was in 1978 that William accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and was ordained as deacon at First Baptist Church of North Pole six months later. He loved to share God’s word with people and pray for and with others. He prayed countless times with his children and grandchildren and included God’s word in lessons he taught them. He led many people to the Lord including two of his grandchildren, one who he has now been reunited with in heaven.
Throughout his life, William was active-duty US Air Force until 1980. He became a member of the Alaska Air National Guard in 2003. Simultaneously, William was a Certified Vehicle Inspector and Weight Station Operator for the State of Alaska, DOT. He officially retired from the military in 2003 and retired from the state as well. William stayed very active in his retirement. He went back to work in Nutrition Services at North Pole Middle School where he enjoyed serving the children’s meals. He loved being able to make the kids laugh and encouraged many not to be wasteful with food. He spent the last six years as a member of the parliamentary board for the Santa’s Senior Citizens center in North Pole. He also spent time as a member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he taught seniors how to use technology.
William was very proud of his service to his country and was rarely seen without either his black Vietnam Era or blue Retired USAF hat; he wore them faithfully and was regularly thanked for his service. His last two gestures were a kiss to his wife and a salute to his children.
William will be remembered most for his sense of humor and beautiful smile. He loved to make others laugh. His smile was infectious and when he laughed at the end of his stories, others were usually already laughing because his stories were amazing to listen to. He always made a story sound so believable that it was often hard to tell if the wild adventure he was describing happened or if he was just “pulling the wool” again.
William was kind-hearted and shared his time with those he felt close to. He spent countless hours chatting and laughing with his long-time friend Joe Dinkins at Just Haircuts barbershop in Fairbanks. An avid board game, crossword, and sudoku player, William spent time with another beloved friend, Jerry Weatherford, playing a well-matched game of cribbage that included decaf coffee, laughs, and sportsmanship. William was an avid bird watcher and studied what kind of food attracted different kinds of birds for years.
A quiet force of nature, William was not one to mince words. He said what he felt, and he spoke the truth. He was a believer in right over wrong and one did not want to be on the wrong side of the truth when William spoke. However, one would always leave the conversation with their dignity and a better person for it. William was strong-willed, and even stubborn, but his stubbornness made him successful. He even went back to college while working at the weight station and earned a degree in Business Administration. He stayed up many nights for years with his wife baking pies and preparing food boxes to deliver to those in need over the Thanksgiving holidays. William believed in doing the right thing because it was the right thing to do.
Whether it was by “Sandy” for many that knew him or “Kentuck” as he was known by his best friend Archie Hale (Emma), William lived a life that was full of love and left an impact on so many. To say he will be missed is an understatement. His life was orderly, and he left nothing undone. He leaves a huge hole that only God can fill in the lives of his family and friends. The love he shared with his wife is an example to all that a foundation built from love is one that will never fail.
William is survived by his wife, Chrya, his sons, Sherman, and William (Cassandra), his daughter Yonna, and his younger sister, Sheila Sanderson. He leaves behind eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He leaves a host of family members in both Louisville and Glasgow Kentucky. He will be truly missed.

Hovet on November 10, 1923, in Reynolds, ND, the oldest of seven children. She was salutatorian of her high school graduating class and attended Concordia College in Moorhead,
MN. She met Gordon Stanley Dufseth in Bemidji, MN and the two were married June 4, 1949. Millie and Gordon traveled the Alaska Highway, arriving in Fairbanks on March 17, 1950. He
worked as a carpenter and in 1952 they founded Dufseth Construction Company. Together they welcomed four children: Edith Ann, John Rolf, Gordon Stanley, and Stephen Mel. In addition to raising her family, Millie was her husband’s business partner and the bookkeeper for the company. She continued in that role after Gordon died in 2005 and sons Steve and Stan took
over the company. Accountants remarked that her books balanced to the penny every year. Together with her husband, Millie was an active and involved member of Fairbanks Lutheran Church. statewide organization of Lutheran Church Women. Millie loved to garden. She raised vegetables to feed her family and always had a surplus at the end of the season. She had her own raspberry patch, which seemed to get bigger every year, and made jams and jellies to enjoy all winter long. Her split-level home, built by Gordon in 1959, was surrounded by flowers. peonies of every shade with special friends. Family was central to Millie’s life, just as she was at the heart of her family. Every holiday was celebrated around her table. cake. Millie was preceded in death by her granddaughter Jamie Lee of Claremont, NC. In addition to her sister Judie Trygg Barnes of Spokane, WA, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Edie and Bill Husby, son Stan Dufseth, and son and daughter-in-law Steve and Patty Dufseth,

The memories will stay, it’s all I have.
They will be in my mind and stay the same.
Those are mine to keep and will be replayed everyday.
Remembering you is easy, always Grandpa Santa to my boys, always daddy to me.
Missing you is a heartache that’ll never go away.
Family and friends, he’s in our hearts, forever he will be.
We will all miss you daddy, Especially me. ~Courtney Thiel

Charles Leo Milles - January 23, 1935 - February 13, 2023

Departed: 02/13/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Charles “Chuck” Leo Milles of Fairbanks, AK passed away on February 13, 2023, surrounded
by family at the age of 88 years. He was born on January 23, 1935 in Great Falls, Montana to the late Aloysius Milles and Grace Logan Milles Heath.
On May 12, 1956, he was united in marriage to Barbara Faye (Waddell) Milles, who survives. They celebrated sixty-six years of marriage and have been best friends for 69 years. They were always together regardless of where they went. Chuck and Barb raised eight children: Chris (Teresa), Michelle Evans (Roger), Roberta, Valerie Flint (Mark), Brian (Nancy), Tony (Kristie), Kevin (Wendy) and Greg (Kelly). There are 22 grandchildren: Eric Allers (Grace), Fred Morrison (Maria), Kyle Evans, Linda Benson (Matt), Patrick Evans (Laura), Josh Flint (Amber), Christine Spencer (Dusty), Lynne Flint (Matt Dwyer), Charles Ross Flint (Michael), Brandy Milles, Jamie Milles, Mason Milles, Jessyca Hohn, Dannylle LaBrec, Wyatt Milles, Erica Meier (Kenny), Julianna Milles, Sierra Milles, Kaden Milles, Wylie Milles, Brady Milles, and Scarlett Milles. There are also 24 great-grandchildren: Jacob Morrison, Cassidy Morrison, Andrew Allers, Connor Benson, Alanna Nelson-Setterberg, Kresslynne Flint, Tavis Flint, Grace Spencer, Millie Spencer, Ryker Spencer, Nora Spencer, Landon Flint, Eddy Dwyer, Mabel Dwyer, Sunny Dwyer, Lucas Hohn, Brayden LaBrec, Raegan LaBrec, Saylor LaBrec, Austyn Milles, Olivia Meier, Ember Meier, Kylo Meier, and Selena
(Milles) Cisneros. Chuck is also survived by half-brother Bill Heath of Poplarville, MS, cousin Stan Logan of
Billings, MT, and nephew, Eric Gage of Hobbs, NM. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by Barb’s parents, Harold and Christine Waddell, grand-children Troy Robert Milles and Tara Lynne Flint, and his beloved Yorkie, Max.
Chuck spent his high school years in southeast Alaska and graduated from Palmer High School. He obtained a bachelors in elementary education and was a basketball student-athlete at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He later received a masters degree from Southern Oregon College. Chuck spent 20 years as an elementary school teacher in Fairbanks. While he initially taught PE at Denali and Nordale, the majority of his career was teaching fifth grade at Barnette and fifth/sixth grade at Hunter. He was meant to be in the classroom as many of his old students can attest, especially those that had close encounters with a cloud of chalk after not paying attention in class. He was always an educator, as he often challenged the grandkids and great grandkids with equations to solve. He worked summers as a laborer on many local and remote projects. He retired from Laborers’ Union Local 942. He also worked for the Alaska DOT/PF as
an equipment operator for six years. As a father, he was involved in all of the kids and grandchildren’s sporting activities; often cheering us on be it at the hockey rink, soccer fields, cross-country ski races, basketball, volleyball and baseball/softball games. He was involved in the early years of the Fairbanks
Amateur Hockey Association as they built and maintained outdoor hockey rinks at the schools. Many a cold day or night was spent “making ice” at one of the local outdoor rinks. He also coached hockey and basketball for some of the kids teams. Chuck was the volunteer FAHA referee scheduler for over 20 years; using paper and pencil and making many phone calls as this was before the internet and spreadsheets. Both Chuck and Barb were Master Gardeners
and they were always working together in the yard and garden during the summer months.
Chuck was very proud of his lawns and enjoyed his time spent on his mower.
Even with failed eye-sight, he was able to ride the mower around the yard to mow and to move the water hose. He was also the foreman watching over what mom was doing in the garden or flower beds. He loved sitting on the porch swing in the sunshine with their new Yorkie, Jax, as he ran around the yard. He was skilled at building as he built two homes over the years for his family. He would
also work on projects for and with his children to pass on his building and lawn care knowledge. He always enjoyed camping, by trailer, converted bus, and later by RV, around Alaska, be it driving the Denali Highway for Barb to pick berries or for the kids to fish up Chena Hot Springs Road or visiting Denali National Park. Both Chuck and Barb are lifetime members of the UAF Nanook Face-off Club and over the years put in a lot of time and effort supporting Nanook hockey. They are also inductees in the Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame and members of the
Pioneers of Alaska. Chuck was known for his quick lighthearted sense of humor. The grin he had when there were
fun times will remain with us all, forever.
No services are planned. Donations in Chuck’s name can be made to the UAF Nanook Face-off Club at
engage.Alaska.edu/UAF/FOC .

Peter E. Merry - February 17, 1930 - December 26, 2022

Departed: 12/26/2022 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Captain Peter Edward Merry: loving father and husband to Renee, Alaska bush pilot, jet captain, Alaska Aviation Legend, FAA Master Pilot, Master Guide, mechanic, fisherman and gold miner; filed his final flight plan and took off on his final journey on December 26, 2022. He battled cancer for the past six years, always with a smile on his face, and slipped away peacefully, with dignity and grace, surrounded by family in Tucson, Arizona. He was 92. Peter was the third child and only son born to Edward and Ida (Whithey) Merry on February 17,1930, in Coos Bay, Oregon and grew up in Seattle. He had two older sisters, Dawn and May Dee.
He lived a life filled with adventure, exploring wild country, hunting and fishing and flying. In his life he booked over 37,000 air hours in an incredible variety of aircraft, most over the interior of Alaska without any of the instruments for IFR, GPS, or satellite communication pilots enjoy today. He married the love of his life and raised four daughters as the best girl dad ever. He worked practically every day of his life, from a child selling papers up until his retirement from Everts Air at the age of 86. He was a humble, kind, man who planned what he was going to do well in advance and packed as much into each day as he could. Peter’s interest in aviation began early in life when as a small boy his father would take him by streetcar to the south end of Lake Washington where they would watch seaplanes take off and land. He was determined to learn to fly float planes, and that he did.
During the Second World War, the Washington National Guard enlisted boys, ages 13 to 16 to train as defenders of their homeland. Dad was 14 when he joined the guard and learned to shoot. He earned two service medals by the time he was 16. The back of the Washington Guard Medal reads: “For service in defense of our nation and state,” and the artillery medal reads: “Small Bore.” Throughout his life he was an excellent marksman and knew the proper care of firearms and loaded his own rounds. He spent two summers (age 15 & 16) as cook on a fishing boat in the Gulf of Alaska and used the money for flight school. He took flight training at Kurtzer's Flying Service, Lake Union, WA. and soloed on February 15,1947 two days before his 17 th birthday in a Taylorcraft on floats. He earned his Private Pilot’s License on July 22, 1947. His instructor died tragically the following month in an accident on takeoff from Boeing Field. Dad never forgot her, nor any of the other pilots he knew throughout his life that perished in their planes, and he always spoke reverently about them, as each life lost became a personal lesson to him.During the summers of 1948 and 1949 he flew spotting fish out of Petersburg, AK and commercial fished for long-line halibut and seined salmon. He joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was activated in 1950. His unit, the 73 rd , wound up in Chateauroux-Doels, France, stationed at a chateau they called “Chateau
Mud.” Following 21 months of service to his country with the US.Air Force Reserve, Peter used his GI Bill benefits to earn a Multi-Engine Sea rating and Instrument Rating.
In 1953, Dad was hired by Northwest Airlines, and completed the airline's DC-3/DC-4 training. He then flew as co-pilot in a C-46 for Air Transport Association on a Civilian Air Movement contract out of Boeing Field, Seattle, WA. He flew with Captain Milt Donner, who later became the Director of Aviation for the State of Alaska. From August through December 1953, he flew for Johnson Flying Service, transporting soldiers deploying to the Korean conflict from coast to coast in a C-47. From 1954 to 1956 Peter flew a 135 hp Pacer and a CH-300 Bellanca Pacemaker (nicknamed “Shakey Jake”) on floats for Alaska Coastal Airlines. He flew Mail Run; which covered Hawk Inlet, Angoon, Baranof Hot Springs, Chatum, Tenakie, and Tulsaquah.
He also flew a G-5 Lockheed Vega on floats. He flew the Vega up the Taku River to Tulsaquah and throughout Southeast Alaska. He was hired by Sheldon &Shell; Simmons, who instructed him to memorize the coastline and every tributary while flying in good weather, so he would know exactly where he was when the weather turned. It was while flying “Shakey Jake” for Alaska Coastal in 1956 that Dad met his future wife, a beautiful dental assistant, Renee Evans, from Rampart, as he flew her out to the Aleutians for work. In 1956, Dad was hired by, Interior Airways, and moved to Barrow. He flew as co-pilot in the DC-3 and C-46 aircraft to Dew-Line stations. He also flew a Cessna 180 and a loat equipped Norseman, nicknamed "Black-Ball" because it had an 8-ball painted on the cowling, out of Barter Island throughout the north slope. On August 1,1956, Dad was hired by Wien Airlines. He would fly for Wien for the next thirty years. From 1956 to 1957, he flew out of Fairbanks as a C-46 Co-pilot, and with Jorgy Jorgenson in the DC-3 to DEW Line and ALICE Sites. He also flew a Cessna-180 and a DeHavilland Beaver on runs to
Wainwright, Pt. Lay, Mead River, the Colville River Delta and occasionally over the Brooks Range to Anaktuvuk Pass. He also flew from Fort Yukon in the C-180 and to and from Kotzebue. August 8, 1958, Peter, and Renee were married, and he brought her to Barrow with him. She would often recall her first impression while stepping off the C-46 onto the north slope as “what have I gotten myself into?” This was the beginning of a romance that would last over 46 years until Mom’s untimely death in 2005. Throughout their time together, Dad and his bride
made many dear friends across Alaska, especially on the North Slope, and marrying into the Rampart- Evans/Mayo clan gave him extensive kinship ties.
In 1959, Peter purchased a 125 horsepower Piper PA-18, 1294Alpha, from Everett, Washington, and he and his pregnant wife flew “94Alpha” through Canada all the way to Barrow. The customs agent in Eagle was startled to see them arrive on a frigid day in March and shook his head when he learned where they were headed! Between 1958 and 1960 Wien had him flying Beechcraft models A-T11, C-45, the model 18, and a Swiss built Pilatus Porter out of Fairbanks and Barrow. During that time, he flew out to ARLIS-1. ARLIS-1 was an ice island approximately 346 miles northwest of Point Barrow. Flying from Fairbanks to the North Slope, he traversed the high valleys of the Gates of the Arctic around Mount Doonerak and established camps along the Itkillik River and on the south side of the Brooks Range. He staked a parcel of land on Oola Lake.
Dad guided hunts for polar bear, Dall sheep, Caribou and grizzly bears and was master guide in the Itkillik Valley for over 30 years. Senator Ted Stevens awarded Peter with a Senatorial patent for his 5-acre headquarters site at Oola Lake in the Itkillik Valley where he built cabins. Dad hauled most of the building materials for all their cabins with his planes or brought in on a Beaver on floats or an Otter on skis. In the early sixties, he and Mom would spend time every summer in the Brooks with their two girls (at the time) working together on the cabins.
Dad continued to fly the bush for Wien in the Twin Beech, Cessna 180s, Bush Pilot for Wien Airlines and routinely flew to communities along the Arctic Coast, the interior along the Yukon River, and west as far as Savoonga and Gambell. He flew Wien’s first DeHaviland Twin Otter from Toronto to its new home in Fairbanks and was instrumental in getting the State of Alaska to bring snowplow equipment to villages and assuming maintenance of the runways at Ruby, Nulato, Huslia and Kaltag, greatly improving the safety of bush flying in the interior of Alaska.
In 1968 he traveled to Belfast, Ireland and flew back a turbine- powered Short's Skyvan for Wien. In 1969 he received a rating and Captain's check in the F27 -227. He flew as Captain of F27-227 on runs to villages and DEW line sites around the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean Coasts as well as in Southeast Alaska. He flew as captain on the F27 from 1970 through 1974, most often with Cliff Everts as co-pilot, on the Fairbanks, Nome, St Lawrence Island runs. They enjoyed each other’s company and would often take their children along With them in the jump seat. In 1975 he earned a type rating and Captain's check in the Boeing 737 And type rating and Captain’s check in the Boeing 727 in 1981. In 1976, Wien moved their jet crews to Anchorage and Dad and Mom bought a house off O’Malley. Their home in Anchorage was always filled with family and friends. Peter flew as a Captain in BO-737 and BO-727 for Wien, flying routes to Barrow, Dead Horse, Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City and Phoenix until the company closed in 1984. He then flew for New Wien Airlines in the Boeing- 737 in 1985. When Wien sadly folded for good, Dad went to work for ERA Aviation flying medevac missions from Anchorage, Alaska in a Beech King Air 200. In 1990 he moved his family back to Fairbanks, and he went to work
flying a C-46 for Everts Air. He built a beautiful home for them at Chena Marina, in which he lived for 32 years. Dad flew for Everts until 1994, when he moved from a pilot position with Everts to a Repairman position. After over 40 years of commercial flying, at the age of 64, he began a new career. Following Mom’s death in 2005, Cliff and his coworkers at Everts gave him a work family and allowed
him to continue keep working until his diagnosis with cancer and subsequent retirement in 2016, at the age of 86. He was a “company man” for Wien for 30 years, and a “company man” for Everts Air for 26. Peter was awarded the FAA Orville and Wilbur Wright Master Pilot Award in 2006 and was honored by the Alaska Air Carrier’s Association as an Alaska Aviation Legend in 2013. Dad’s pride and joy was his Cessna 185, N4507Foxtrot. He bought her in 1968 and flew her until he couldn’t handle the loading and fueling himself. He flew her across the state, hauling fish, moose, kids, groceries, watermelons and fireworks for the Rampart 4 th of July, building materials and people to and from Mom’s village of Rampart and his beloved Brooks Range. He would tap her control panel gently as he throttled up to get on the step and whisper, “come on baby.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other organization. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and information about their family, such as surviving relatives and predeceased loved ones. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in an obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find submission guidelines on their website or by contacting them directly. Be sure to check their deadlines and requirements carefully.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while newspapers may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or other factors.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as their name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so it's entirely appropriate to include humorous anecdotes or personality traits that made them unique.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're unsure how to address in the obituary, it's best to err on the side of tact and discretion. Focus on celebrating their positive qualities and achievements.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about charitable donations or memorials in lieu of flowers in their loved one's obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The length of time an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or publication. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may archive them after a certain period.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an obituary that has already been published, contact the publication or platform directly to see what options are available.

What if I want to write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be a public tribute to the deceased, and anonymity can make it difficult for friends and family to find and pay their respects.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or other literary elements can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I ensure accuracy in an obituary?

To ensure accuracy in an obituary, double-check all facts and details carefully before submitting it for publication. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review it for errors or omissions.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member. You can also reach out to a professional writer or counselor for support.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing an obituary with friends, family, and community members. Many online platforms also allow you to share links to the obituary on social media.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?

If you're writing an obituary for someone from a different cultural or religious background, be respectful of their traditions and customs. Research any specific requirements or protocols that may apply.

What if I want to include special requests or instructions in an obituary?

If you have special requests or instructions you'd like to include in the obituary, such as burial wishes or memorial service details, be sure to include them clearly and concisely.

Can I use humor or irony in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor and irony can be effective ways to celebrate the person's life and personality. Just be sure to use good judgment and avoid anything that might be offensive or insensitive.

How do I ensure that an online obituary is easily searchable?

To ensure that an online obituary is easily searchable, use keywords such as the person's name, date of birth and death, and location. This will help friends and family find it quickly and easily.
