Curtis M. Cook - November 14, 1968 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Ellettsville)
Obituary Preview: Curtis Milton Cook, age 55, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away March 16, 2024, following a brief illness.
Born November 14, 1968, in North Little Rock, Arkansas to Milton and Analea Cook, Curtis will be remembered by all who knew him not only for his larger-than-life persona and stature, his love of music, gorgeous bass voice, and his passion for Indian cuisine, but also for his extraordinary capacity to love and care for humankind.
During the past 16 years Curtis has provided service within the Bloomington community through the employment of Stone Belt, a disability and support organization, being involved in several capacities throughout his tenure, with the most recent position as site supervisor. He loved caring for patients in the same manner in which he had been cared for many years earlier at UAMS in Little Rock during which he was so greatly impacted by his oncology nursing staff to the degree that he chose to leave his career path in music to care for people, although music would continue to be an integral part of his life.
He was extremely talented and was gifted with a beautiful voice which he used his entire life beginning at an early age in his church children’s choir, roles in high school musicals, college, and graduate school. He played commanding roles on stage in many operas and toured all over the world for several years following graduation from Indiana University School of Music. But it would be his love and care for others that would bring him the greatest joy. Curtis felt so blessed to have many friends and had cultivated deep meaningful relationships throughout his life but most especially during his 35 years in Bloomington. He dearly loved his church family who would become a strong anchor in his spiritual life as he grew in his faith and knowledge and love for God alongside them for many years. This family has selflessly poured themselves in every possible way into caring for Curtis during his recent illness. He was so very grateful and humbled by the endless expressions of love and care and support by so many. It has truly been a picture of God’s power, compassion, and intentional love for us all. Thanks be to God!
Although he remained in Indiana after completing his education, Curtis always considered Arkansas his home and would enjoy visiting as often as possible, most especially during holidays and special celebrations such as his mother’s 90th birthday party visit in May 2023. Curtis relished the opportunity to help his sisters throughout the year (via ZOOM meetings!)  in planning an eventful week-long fete which would become one of his fondest experiences ever and would be mentioned many times during his final days.
Surviving Curtis are his mother, Analea, (father dec.2009), his sisters Connie Scherz (Scott) and Cara Phillippe (Robert), and 10 adoring nieces and nephews, along with their families, each of whom he loved and cherished.
All his family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for everyone who has walked alongside us each step and has helped Curtis in every possible way - including all the medical staff involved during his extensive hospital stays and hospice and home care givers.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Trinity Reformed Church at 2:00 pm with burial to follow at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm. The family kindly requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be considered to either of the following:  Stone Belt Services (https:/web.charityengine.net/CurtisCook/.) or
Trinity Reformed Church. Arrangements are being handled by Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville.

Johnny liked to be called "John" or "Sarge". He was an infantry drill instructor for the US Army specializing in nuclear project assembly. He was enlisted for nearly 25 years. John loved his family and the people closest to him. His children were taught family, hard work, honor, respect, and loyalty. He loved to joke around and was very ornery, but he always spoke instead exactly what he thought was right, or believed, with no hesitation, and was very strong-willed. He was a very hard worker, and once he left the military, he became a truck driver he loved being on the road and traveling. He loves camping and sightseeing. A.k.a. rubbernecking as we call it, and spending time with his children, and all of his many grand children, and great grandchildren.  He took every opportunity he could to spoil, whichever ones were around.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and other biographical information. It may also include details about their life, accomplishments, and surviving family members.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral service details and any charitable organizations where donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly for their submission guidelines. Some may have online forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and photos.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers may charge by the word or line, while others may have package deals. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can ensure that your life story is told accurately and with your own voice.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's obituary publicly, you can opt for a private notice or only share it with close family and friends.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate the person's life and personality.

How do I handle errors or corrections in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform directly to report any errors or request corrections. They will work with you to make changes as quickly as possible.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a special anniversary or birthday, contact the original publication or online platform for permission and guidance.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, often without additional biographical information. An obituary provides more detail about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary.

How do I deal with conflicting opinions about what to include in an obituary?

If there are disagreements among family members or friends about what to include in the obituary, consider having a calm and respectful discussion to come to a consensus.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes! Even if someone passed away years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

Are there any specific formatting guidelines for writing an obituary?

While there's no one right way to format an obituary, it's generally best to use a clear and concise structure, with separate paragraphs for different sections of information (e.g., biographical details, surviving family members).

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to include links to memorial websites, social media profiles, or other relevant pages.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period of time.

Can I create a video or multimedia tribute instead of a written obituary?

Yes! With modern technology, it's now possible to create multimedia tributes that incorporate images, music, and video clips. These can be shared online or at memorial services.

Are there any cultural or religious considerations when writing an obituary?

Yes! Be sensitive to cultural and religious traditions when writing an obituary. For example, some faiths may require specific language or customs be observed.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the person's life that you're unsure about sharing publicly, consider consulting with family members or close friends before including them in the obituary.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?
