She was the oldest of three children and grew up on the Swart family farm in the Prinsburg area. Verna attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Clara City High School in 1946. She was active in 4H and church choir.  She had many cousins and they enjoyed getting together for picnics, roller-skating and kitten ball.
Verna married Marvin Peterson in 1951.  Marvin was in the U.S. Airforce and the couple lived in Michigan, Colorado and then Lake Wilson.  They had one son, Terry Lee.  The couple later divorced.  Verna married Donald Sabin on June 22, 1958 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lake Wilson.  They lived on the Sabin family farm that Donald’s grandfather started in 1901.  In 1964, the couple adopted a girl, Mari, from Lutheran Social Services.  Don and Verna enjoyed traveling to Northern MN, Arizona, Florida, and Verna’s trip of a lifetime, to Hawaii.
Don and Verna enjoyed participating in a weekly card club. Verna was an avid ceramist and began taking classes in 1965 in Pipestone.  In 1983, Verna bought a kiln and started her own ceramic business.  She had many students throughout the years.  She was very proud to have worked with the Bible school students making sure they would paint their own nativity set and build their own stable. She was a homemaker, doing the usual sewing, gardening and canning.  Verna had a huge strawberry bed that kept the family fed all year, always a treat in the winter time with ice cream. In 1999, Verna was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her daughter, Mari, moved home to care for both her parents. Verna sang in the church choir and was a member of the Lake Wilson women’s auxiliary.  She was an avid birdwatcher and kept daily bird count.  Verna also enjoyed playing Scrabble, doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles.  She looked forward to Mari’s college friends coming every year for a farm party.  On August 1, 2020, she was proud to host the wedding of Dr. Terry and Dr. Mallory Jorgenson.

Hedwig Luzie Schmitke - July 19, 1933 - January 31, 2022

Departed: 01/31/2022 (Chandler)
Obituary Preview: Hedwig (Hedy) Schmitke, 88, of Chandler, MN, died on Monday, January 31, 2022 at Murray County Hospice House, in Slayton, MN. Services for Hedwig Schmitke are planned for Memorial weekend in Virginia, MN.  Condolences may be mailed to Karl Schmitke, 310 3rd Ave. SW, Pipestone, MN 56164.
On July 19th, 1933, in the town of Fulda Germany a sprightly little red head was born to Martha and August Karl Eltese and that began the adventure of Hedwig Luzie Elteste.  Her idealic childhood was interrupted by World War II when Hedy, age 11, lost her mother and four siblings (ranging from age 17- 1 ½) in a bomb shelter on December 26.  Her oldest brother, Stephane, age 19, also died in the war as a soldier.  But her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, had greater plans for her.  He guided her through a new stepfamily when her father, who survived the war, remarried.  Hedy continued to grow into a strong, kind, independent woman behind the Iron Curtain.
She was finally able to get back to West Germany and then at the age of 24 she met and fell in love with an American soldier named Arnold Schmitke. He was stationed with the Army in Germany and served as a Tank Commander.  They were married in a lovely castle in Frankfurt, Germany on July 27th, 1957.  Soon, Hedy and Arnold began a new adventure in the U.S. where they settled in Northern Minnesota, eventually moving to the Mesabi Iron Range where Arnold worked in the mines for 37 years. After several years of marriage and a newfound saving faith in Christ, they began to adopt children. Growing up on a hobby farm was a perfect setting to raise four beautiful kids.
Hedy's faith was tested by tragedy again when she and Arnold lost their first son, Erik to a brain tumor at the age of 11; during the long illness Hedy was able to minister to other children in the children's ward. Life went on and her oldest daughter Heidi married Patrick Randall and had three boys; Yvette married Matt Lange and had three kids as well; Karl was the last to marry and had two children with Marcy.
Hedy dearly loved her grandchildren and poured into their lives.  After 49 years of marriage Arnold went home to be with the Lord he loved and served. Shortly after Arnold died, Hedy decided to leave the family homestead to start the next and final chapter in her life in Chandler to be near her son Karl and his family. It was here she met several wonderful people who blessed her with their friendship.  Throughout Hedy's long and full life, she has left seeds of kindness, generosity, and the Love of God.  On Monday, January 31, 2022, Hedy died at the Murray County Hospice Home in Slayton, MN.   Now she is reunited with her husband and son and lives in the presence of the Savior who sustained her and gave her strength.
She is survived by daughters, Heidi (Patrick) Randall, Yvette (Matthew) Lange; son, Karl (Marcy) Schmitke; grandchildren:  Christopher Randall, Justin Randall, Sean Randall, Maralee Biddle, Isaac Lange, Alicia Lange, Alexandria Schmitke and Charles Schmitke; great-grandchildren: Cameron Henderson-Shockley, Gage Randall, Chloe Randall and Luca Swanson; one sister, Monica and numerous nieces and nephews in Europe.
Hedy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arnold and son, Erik; siblings, Stephane, Helene, Erik, Helga and Siegfried.

Alan Dale Van Dam - January 29, 1970 - December 12, 2021

Departed: 12/12/2021 (Chandler)
Obituary Preview: Alan Dale Van Dam, 51, of Chandler, MN died on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.  Visitation will be held at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, and will continue on Friday, December 17 from 9:30 - 10:30 AM with the funeral service at 10:30 AM at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church with Al Kruisselbrink leading the service.  Burial will be at the Chandler Memorial Cemetery following the service with Pastor Harold Westra.
Alan “Al” Dale Van Dam was born in Pipestone, MN on January 29, 1970 to Harold and Marcella (Rylaarsdam) Van Dam.  The family lived in Leota when he was born.  Al was baptized at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church. When Al was ten years old, the family moved to an acreage near Leota.  He made profession of faith in the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota.  He attended the Leota Christian Elementary School, Southwest Christian High School and Dordt College, where he received a degree in Ag Business and Animal Science.
Agriculture always played an important part in Al’s life.  As a child, he helped his father plant trees, and water them "one bucket at a time" with his brothers on the acreage and at the Ebenezer Church where his parents were janitors.  He enjoyed going to the Rylaarsdam farms to help his uncles. He loved going to toy farm shows, and enjoyed playing with his brothers with their play farm. On Sundays, the Rylaarsdam family would get together at Grandpa and Grandma Rylaarsdam’s home in Chandler.  All the boy cousins would bring their farm toys to town and play “farming” together.
The value of helping others was instilled in him as a youth. Al and his brother mowed lawn for 15 people in the Leota community, which is something he continued as an adult.  While at college, Al participated in two PLIA (Putting Love Into Action) trips.
After college Al farmed and milked cows. A blind date set up by Al’s brother, Mark, led the way for him to meet his future wife, Shela Blom.  They were married on December 28, 1996 at the American Reformed Church in Luverne.   They lived on an acreage near Leota until they moved into Chandler in 2011.  Al worked for De Kam Seed and Fertilizer, Cargill and then Prins Feed & Grain which was later purchased by Chandler Feed.  Al and Shela purchased the Chandler Discount Market.  Al helped with the store while continuing working for Chandler Feed. They also are janitors of their church.
Community service and helping others has always been important to Al.  He has been a Chandler Christian School board member, deacon, youth leader, and currently he was serving as an elder for the Chandler Christian Reformed church, and as a Chandler city council member.
In what little spare time he had, Al enjoyed camping, fishing, collecting farm toys, watching old TV shows like “Hogan’s Heroes” and “Mash” and listening to Christian music.
Even though Al worked for Ag businesses, farming has always been his true love.
On December 12, 2021, Al died at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from complications from COVID.
Al is survived by his wife, Shela; his children, Jeremy and Abby; his mother, Marcella (John) Groen; siblings, Mark (Paula) Van Dam, Amy (Corwin) Runia and Curt (Kim) Van Dam. Parents-in-law, Earl and Marsha Blom; Sister-in-law Deb (Dave) Stanelle; Step-siblings, Jason (Kyle) Groen; Julie (Jim) Sherman; Nephews and Nieces: Katie, Jacob and Joshua Van Dam, Evan and Daniel Runia, Carter and Levi Van Dam, Nathan and Yanzi Stanelle, Kayla and Josh Loomis, and Sarah Stanelle, step-nieces and nephews, family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Eva Van Dam; Marinus and Alice Rylaarsdam; father, Harold Van Dam; infant daughter, Emily; infant sister, Lisa; and infant nephew, Derrek; step-siblings, John Jr. Groen and Jolene Groen.

Mary Ann Gunnink - August 31, 1933 - October 11, 2021

Departed: 10/11/2021 (Chandler)
Obituary Preview: On October 11, 2021, Mary Ann Gunnink entered her heavenly home. She is now, in her words, “at the cross of Calvary”. She is already missed beyond measure but her bravery in her final hours was remarkable.
Mary Ann DeRuyter was born August 31, 1933 to Dick and Lena (Kooistra) DeRuyter on the family farm near Rock Valley, Iowa. When she was in 3rd grade, the family moved to Hills where she continued her education through the 8th grade. Mary spent the next several years as a housekeeper and nanny for area families.
When Mary was in her early 20s, she was set up on a blind date with a man named Peter Gunnink. She liked him so much, she decided to make him her husband. They were married on March 2, 1956 and enjoyed over 60 years of wedded bliss; Mary’s secret to a long marriage was simple: “You have to get along.” Pete and Mary lived on a farm between Chandler and Lake Wilson where they raised 8 children. Her kids remember fondly the childhood she provided them.
Mary’s Christian faith was important to her and she stated often how she felt God carried her through life. She raised her children in the church and they recall dutifully packing into the family station wagon twice every Sunday to attend services. Mary was a member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Lake Wilson.
Mary enjoyed visiting with whoever would call or stop by, sending cards for special occasions (she never forgot an event), listening to music (we have no doubt she already asked Elvis to perform Blue Suede Shoes for her in Heaven), celebrating her birthday month (yes, she wanted the whole month!), and making many quilts, hotdishes, and desserts during her active years. Most of all, she loved spending time with family. Mary’s idea of family expanded far and wide, and she had plenty of room in her heart for those she loved as her own, including Dan and Lauret Haupert, Rudy and Lori Gunnink, and many others.
A word used often to describe Mary was ‘unselfish’. While her kids and grandkids would have loved for her to focus on herself, that was just not Mary’s personality. She provided for her children, brought her grandchildren on special birthday trips, made phone calls and visits even if she did not feel well, and was always sure to keep her candy bowl full for visitors and Edgebrook staff members.
In 1984, Pete and Mary moved from the farm to a house in Lake Wilson where Mary hosted many family events over the years. In 2016, they moved to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton. Pete preceded Mary in death on August 11, 2016. Mary passed away at Pipestone County Medical Center on October 11, 2021 at the age of 88 years, 1 month, and 11 days. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Edgebrook for the compassionate care they gave Mary for the past 5 years. She loved each of you like family.
There are many family and friends left to celebrate Mary’s life. This includes her children Darwin (Linda) of Woodstock, Larry (Bobbi Jo) of Lake Wilson, Audrey (Tom) Ramsbacher of San Antonio, Texas, Linda (Brad) Bauer of Farmington, Tom (Mary) of Lake Benton, Chuck (Darcy) of Ham Lake, Sharon (Tom) Calabrese of Pomfret Center, CT, and daughter-in-law Naomi Garcia of Raymond. Mary has 25 grandchildren: David (Luann); Trevor (Madi), Codi (Alyson), Wade (Nichole), Tanner (Wuan), and Thad (Mallary); Ben (Shannon), Liz (Michael), and Joe Ramsbacher; Nick (Callie) and Andy (Katie) Bauer; Matt (Naomi), Jennifer (Brady) Ashby; Stephanie (Travis) and Nathan; Katie (Cody) Beam and Lizzie and Alex Christianson; Nick, Peter, and Alyson Calabrese; Conor and Camryn Wogan, and Eliza and Michael Gunnink. Mary’s legacy continues with 21 great-grandchildren and 3 more on the way. Her siblings survive her: Gert Van Engen, Mina (Ed) Poppens, and Carol (Richard) Hill; siblings-in-law Arnie (Connie) Gunnink, Etta Mae Gunnink, Frances DeRuyter, Shirley DeRuyter, and Linda DeRuyter Wissink; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was greeted in Heaven by her husband Pete; son Michael; parents; brothers John (Margaret), Gerrit, Sparky, and Rich; sister Nellie (John) Schoonhoven; and siblings-in-law Allen Franken, Dick Van Engen, Richard (Ruth) Gunnink, John (Annie) Gunnink, Jennie (Rick) Bandstra (Gerald) Masselink, and Bert Gunnink.
Visitation will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lake Wilson from 4\:00 – 7:00 on Friday, October 15, 2021, Celebrating and sharing about her life will begin at 7:00.    Visitation will continue from 10:30 – 11:15 AM on Saturday, October 16, with the Funeral Service at 11:30 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Lake Wilson.

Gertrude Krosschell - July 03, 1919 - August 01, 2021

Departed: 08/01/2021 (Chandler)
Obituary Preview: Gertrude (Spronk) Krosschell was born on July 3, 1919 to John and Gertie (Van Pykern) Spronk on a farm near Steen, MN.  Gertrude started country school at the early age of 5 because her parents didn’t want her brother, Hank, to attend alone.  Therefore, she graduated from the 8th grade at age 12.  Having four brothers and being the only girl at this point, Gert’s mother required her to stay at home and help out with household chores.  While attending Young People’s Society, a handsome young man named Peter, caught her attention when he asked to take her home one evening.  After enduring many pranks from some loving Spronk brothers, Peter J. Krosschell married Gertrude on April 21, 1942 at her parent’s farm near Edgerton, MN.  Within their first year of marriage, Peter was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII and sent overseas for 13 months.  Gert anxiously awaited his return on December 25, 1945.  After an honorable discharge, they made their home in Chandler, MN, which would remain Gert’s home for the next 63 years.  She moved into Edgebrook in 2009, where she would reside until her passing on August 1, 2021 at the age of 102 years and 29 days.
Gert was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church of Chandler.  Gert’s strong commitment to her Lord and her dedication to Christian education was clearly seen throughout her life.  She was known throughout the local communities for her excellent sewing skills.  She would sew from morning until night and each piece was a special joy to her.  She also loved to crochet, using her talents to make many baptism dresses for her great grandchildren, numerous wall hangings, tablecloths, and the Beatitudes wall hanging that is displayed in her church.  Her home was a special place for her, whether it was sitting at her sewing machine, babysitting grandchildren, baking, or having fun with her family...she cherished every single moment.  Gert had an uncanny ability to remember names and birthdays of almost every one of her relatives.  If she had met you once, she remembered you.  Gert was a blessing to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, leaving a legacy of faith, contentment, and unconditional love.
She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Lavonne and Virgil DeJongh, Sioux Falls, SD; Ron and Wendy Krosschell, Chandler, MN; Roger and Tami Krosschell, Chandler, MN; 9 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and one brother, Art (Mayme) Spronk.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter (1995); one grandson, Timothy DeJongh; one great granddaughter, Sailor Prins; her parents; 3 brothers, Henry, Bernard, and Gerrit; and one sister, Jeanette Christoffels.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 9:00 - 10:30 AM at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church.  Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM with Rev. LeRoy Christoffels officiating.  Interment will be at the Chandler Memorial Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Jolene Faye Groen of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Chandler, MN, died at Ava's Hospice House in Sioux Falls on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at the age of 51 years old.
Jolene was born on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1969 in Pipestone, MN to John Henry and Joanne (Bothof) Groen.  She grew up on the family farm five miles south of Chandler, MN.  Her parents raised her in the Christian faith, and she was baptized and made profession of faith in the Chandler Reformed Church.    Christian Schools also played a big part in her life, as Jolene attended the Chandler Christian Elementary School then on to Southwest Christian High School in Edgerton. Growing up on the farm she helped by walking beans, milking cows and picking rocks. After graduation she attended and graduated from Northwestern College, in Orange City, IA.  Later she attended the University of Iowa and earned her Masters’ Degree in Social Services.
Family and music have always played important parts in Jolene’s life.  She enjoyed singing, playing piano and organ and going to concerts.  Her love of family became stronger after her mom became sick and died of cancer. Jolene moved back home to help her dad with the role of raising her four nieces as her own children.  She enjoyed attending the girls’ activities and never missed a sporting event. She even traveled to Australia with Cassie and Chantel when Chantel participated in the “Down Under” track meet.  Jolene went on a mission trip to Cuba with the girls, and she enjoyed traveling to Arizona to visit family.  She continued helping out her siblings in the “grandma” role of her nieces and nephews.
Jolene enjoyed spending time with her grandkids Jocelyn, Carson, Emily and Olivia.  She took them to the zoo, Disney on Ice and enjoyed just hanging out with them on the farm.  She also loved spending time taking care of and playing games with Kaiden and Timothy when they visited the farm for several weeks each summer and also spending time watching Lincoln play ball or working on crafts and sewing with Madison. Her love of shopping showed when she went for the girls, the grandchildren and for herself.
Jolene assisted with starting Life Light and was the events director for 15 years.  She also worked for Child Protection, Bethany Christian Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters and currently worked as a counselor for Greater Minnesota.  She was part of the Board of Directors for Life Light, The Teddy Bear Den and the Chandler Christian School and was a youth group counselor.
Jolene’s biggest passion in life was to share the gospel “but not to water it down”, and that was present throughout her life.   On Sunday March 21st, while she was at Ava’s Hospice House, Jolene went to be with our Lord and Savior. She fought a good fight and served the Lord well.  She was such a good and faithful servant of the Lord.
Jolene is survived by her father John Henry (Marcella) Groen, Chandler; Daughters/Nieces, Clarissa (Casey) Wilson and their children Jocelyn, Carson, Emily and Olivia from Pipestone; Chelsey (Jon) Kroll, Chandler; Cassandra (Dylan) Walhof, Chandler; Chantel (Wesley) Vis, Valley Springs, SD; her brother Jason (Kyle) Bronson- Groen  and their children Dylan, Kaiden, Timothy from Laveen, AZ and her sister Julie (Jim) Sherman and their children Lincoln and Madison from Luverne, MN.  Special friends in her life also included Julie Klinger, Darrell and Tiletta Statema and Alan and Vicki Greene.  She was preceded in death by her mom, Joanne Wilma Groen, her brother John Henry Groen Jr. and her grandparents John and Johanna Bothof and Henry John and Mary J. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

Who writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist with writing the obituary, especially if the family is overwhelmed or struggling to find the right words.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides additional information about the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the notice. Some newspapers charge by the line or word, while others offer package deals or discounts for online-only publications.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space constraints or editorial policies.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional print obituary. It's usually published on a website or social media platform and can include multimedia elements like photos, videos, and audio clips.

How long do online obituaries remain available?
