Ezell Derricks - July 02, 1927 - April 27, 2022

Departed: 04/27/2022 (Champaign)
Obituary Preview: “I hauled off and died and was buried three days later.” -- Ezell Derricks (aka King/Sky King)
Above is the full obituary that Mr. Derricks prepared for himself. If you really knew him, then you know that he believed one’s life and deeds should speak for them beyond the grave. He was right.
Ezell Derricks, born July 2, 1927 in Forrest, Mississippi, relocated himself to Champaign-Urbana as a child and never left.
A man who openly expressed the love of God through service, Mr. Derricks faithfully served the St. Luke C.M.E Church in a variety of official and unofficial capacities for more than 70 years. For many years he was the one to open and close the church for services (meaning he was always present) and could regularly be found there praying, singing, landscaping, fixing things, offering advice, and doing his best to honor God through service. Even as his health failed, he faithfully participated in online worship services and continued his financial support of the ministry.
Mr. Derricks was a revered heavy equipment operator for many years, known in the field as "King" and "Sky King" due to his dexterity in maneuvering steel beams and other heavy loads in tight spaces. He was a proud, long-time member of Local 841 of the International Union of Operating Engineers where he remained active as a retiree. Desiring to be a more hands-on father, Mr. Derricks entered public service to the State of Illinois where he served on the Road Corps, responsible for the evaluation and maintenance of roadways throughout the State. He took pride in creating and extending opportunities for employment and advancement to those who had previously been shut out and retired after more than two decades. In retirement, he was an active grandparent, and served as a landlord and provider of high-quality, low-cost housing to families in need.
Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife, Delores Derricks of Urbana; daughter, Joyce Lyvette Derricks of Atlanta, Georgia; sons: Alan Scott Derricks, Stefon Cobb, Anthony Cobb (Tamme), Domonic Cobb (Nicole) of Champaign; Steven Cobb of Bronx, New York, and Kendric Cobb of Chicago; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Mr. Derricks looks forward to reuniting with his many loved ones who have gone home before him but will be missed and remembered fondly by the many who were blessed by his life dedicated to love and service. Mr. Derricks is requesting in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Luke’s CME church.
Visitation will be held on Saturday April 30th, 2022 at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church 402 W. Main St. Urbana, IL. 61801 from 10-11am with a service to follow at 11am. Mr. Derricks will be interred at Grandview Memorial Gardens 4112 W. Bloomington Rd. Champaign. IL. 61822. Per the family’s request masks will be required for the services. Carlton Robert Mills - July 16, 1942 - March 15, 2022

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Champaign)
Obituary Preview: Carlton Robert Mills, age 79, died of pancreatic cancer in the home of his son in Urbana on March 15, 2022. He began his education in a one-room school house in Hanover, IL, and graduated from Hanover high school in 1960. He then attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1967. Carlton was an innovator at heart and loved being at the forefront of new projects. As such, his career path reflected that sense of adventure. As a senior, he worked on a computer programing project to guide a tractor in the field. At that point he realized he liked computers better than tractors or fields!
He spent his decades-long career at the cutting edge of software engineering where he worked with numerous types of hardware and software: starting with the vacuum tube-based IBM 650, Fortran with punch cards, Algol (he was a life-long devotee), Haskell (he was a leading expert), OS system programmer on the ILLIAC IV supercomputer (at the time the most powerful computer in the world), and, long after retirement, he kept abreast of tech advances and “talked shop” with young professionals. In the 1980’s, he created an online database as part of a start-up using an ADA compiler and X.25 communications software on Unisys hardware. He was possibly the last programmer to have implemented a Bisync communications package (in C) and his work was implemented worldwide for Visa International, the Japanese banking system, and several New York brokerage firms. He was a leader in developing networking so that large and small computers could communicate with each other. Some companies he worked for include Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Army Corps of Engineers, and GCOM. Carlton met Joan Andrews at a meeting of new Baháʼís in Urbana in 1963. They had very different backgrounds but they built a life together striving to respect their diversity. She said that the difference in their race (she is African-American) was less to overcome than the difference in his rural and her urban upbringing!
He loved Baháʼu'lláh and His message of equality and unity of humanity. He strove to improve his ability to serve through life-long learning and attention to the pressing needs of humanity. His quirky humor about life and his righteous anger at injustice and cruelty in the world will be especially missed. Carlton served the Baháʼí community for decades as Treasurer of the Local Spiritual Assembly.  After retirement, he went daily to the Baháʼí Center as if he were going to work. If anyone happened by, he was there to answer questions. He knew what was happening there and what needed to be done. A committee was needed to replace him.  He also served as a Sunday School teacher for many age groups, including preschool.
Carlton lived to be of service to all. He’s the one you’d call if your car broke down and you were stranded—not to fix anything, but to rescue you. He’d even come over to trap a mouse in your kitchen in the middle of the night. He loved to drive and if a friend or family member needed a ride—even hundreds of miles—he’d take them. He liked driving & talking to people so much that he worked as an Uber driver for several years.
Carlton was born 16 July 1942 in Elizabeth, IL to Robert Isaac Mills and Charlotte (McKinley) Mills, the first of 10 children. As the oldest in a big family he learned that soothing a baby was immensely useful and important, and he became very good at it. He delighted in babies and little ones and loved playing with them.
Carlton was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. He reveled in their achievements and loved to share their stories.
Carlton is survived by Joan (Andrews), wife of over 57 years, and his adult children Kathryn (Bernal), Rana, Robert, and Shaun (Monica), 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by 2 of his brothers, Richard and James, and survived by Peter, Douglas, Andrew, Susan, Jane, Debra, and Phillip, his younger siblings, as well as their many children and grandchildren. Graveside Service - Sunday March 20 - 1:00 at Eastlawn Burial Park, 802 N Cunningham, Urbana Celebration of Life  - Monday March 21 - Noon to 4:30 at the Urbana Baha’i Center, 807 E Green, Urbana

Gabriele G Doellner - October 22, 1944 - February 13, 2022

Departed: 02/13/2022 (Champaign)
Obituary Preview: Gabriele Doellner, or “Gabby” by those who dared spark her ire, “It’s GABRIELE, not Gabby!” Passed away Feb 13 at the age of 77. She took her final breath in her son’s arms.
Gabriele emigrated to the United States from Munich, Germany as a 21 year old widow with her toddler son, Christian. She worked factory jobs in the Midwest as the proverbial fish out of water, providing a marked contrast to her physical beauty. This was a testament to her devotion to Christian where no sacrifice was too great. Gabriele took great pride in being a union steward during her factory years.  A dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, Gabriele would spend the Trump presidency screaming at CNN, and hanging up on former friends aka Trump voters on the phone.
Gabriele was a voracious reader.  Truman Capote being her favorite writer. Combined with her love of books was her love of movies. Favorites included Papillon, Doctor Zhivago, Serpico, Raise the Red Lantern, Young Frankenstein, the HBO series, The Wire and The Night Of.  Returning home from work in the ‘70s on Friday nights, Gabriele would make it a weekly ritual to wake up Christian, and spend the night  together watching Sammy Terry’s Nightmare Theater.
Gabriele’s artistic passions would impact Christian who would study film in college as a result of the aesthetic foundation his mother laid for him.
But in the end, Gabriele’s greatest love was animals. Well, that and QVC. Much to the detriment of her credit score. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was a yearly highlight that Gabriele took great joy in watching.
Gabriele is survived by her son, Christian. Memorial donations / in lieu of flowers may be made to the Fairchild Animal Hospital in Danville, Il
