Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and surviving relatives.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased and can be a valuable resource for genealogical research.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the funeral home or a family member, often with the assistance of a funeral director or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and respectful summary of the deceased person's life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving relatives. It may also mention any notable achievements, awards, or charitable organizations they were involved with.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's wishes. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be published online or in specialty publications.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer than a death notice.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, both in print and online. They may also appear on funeral home websites, online obituary platforms, and social media sites.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options for short obituaries, while longer or more detailed ones may require a fee.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can ensure that your life story is told accurately and in your own words. However, it's essential to share your wishes with your loved ones so they know what to do with your pre-written obituary when the time comes.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to make your loved one's obituary publicly available, you can opt for a private or family-only obituary. This can be shared with close relatives and friends through email or private online channels.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many modern obituaries include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to celebrate the person's life. These can be added to online obituaries or printed in special sections of newspapers.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary depends on the complexity of the information and the writer's experience. Typically, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to craft a well-written and respectful obituary.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or updates can be made to an online obituary relatively easily. However, changes to printed obituaries may be more difficult or impossible once they have been published.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance on what to include, consider consulting with a funeral director or professional obituary writer. They can provide valuable insights and support during this difficult time.

Can I use humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on anniversaries of the person's passing or on special occasions like birthdays. This can help keep their memory alive and continue to celebrate their life.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes, writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly requires sensitivity and compassion. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes or song lyrics can add depth and personalization to an obituary. Just ensure they are relevant to the person's life and interests.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

How do I preserve an online obituary over time?

To ensure that an online obituary remains accessible over time, consider saving it as a PDF or printing out a hard copy for safekeeping. You may also want to create a memorial website or blog dedicated to your loved one's memory.
