Vern Letcher - September 05, 1964 - June 17, 2018

Departed: 06/17/2018 (Hay Springs)
Obituary Preview: It is with humble hearts the family of Vern Letcher, share God’s change of flight plans, one way to heaven, Sunday, June 17th, 2018. Vern passed at the Rapid City ICU unit, due to a head injury incurred from a farm accident. Born to Alvern and Corraine (Jacobs) Letcher, September 5, 1964, Vern was born and raised on the family farm on Mirage Flats, Hay Springs, Ne. He officially became a third generation farmer following high school graduation going on to attend WNCC of Aviation, earning an A&P mechanics license. Vern truly loved flying! It gave him great pride and happiness sharing this and giving rides to anyone who’d asked. He also had a dream of crop dusting his crops and with much persistence for far too long for him, he was able to convince his wife to allow him a spray plain. A great source of pride and joy testing his skills and knowledge. Practically born on a motorcycle, riding Harley’s with his wife and taking the kids to the river or occasionally fishing, were a few things that he willingly took time away from farming for. Vern never met a stranger. Considered it a challenge to get your life story if you stood within 5 feet. In lieu of this, he had countless friends. And every one meant the world to him! He loved his animals. He and his puppy Paityn are surely getting some farming done in heaven. Inseparable. Happiness really ensued with the occasional raccoon we’d have. He’d even take the dang thing to Westco for morning coffee and chitchat, not to mention to Alliance to watch fireworks as no one was home to watch Reno. Never a dull moment with Vern Letcher. He was always learning. Challenging himself to be the best farmer he could be daily. He took great pride in supporting his family and affording them the great life of a farm family. Grateful to have boys carrying on his legacy.
The void Vern’s life will leave will not be able to be filled for his surviving wife Shiela (Ginn) of 29 years, children Bryce ( girlfriend Ashley Simmones), Tauna (boyfriend Larry Bennett), Nate (fiancé Erica Mowery) and Hunter, parents Alvern and Corraine, sister Valora Hammond, brother Lyndall as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends.
Vern heroically chose being an organ donor. The gift of life will be shared with many through organ and tissue donation. He continues to give even after his time on earth has passed.
The Letcher family has two angels in heaven prior to Vern. His oldest brother Randy and sister-in-law Karla.
Time to honor Vern and share memories will take place at St Columbkille Catholic Church, Hay Springs, NE- 7 pm, Thursday, June 21st. Returning for services Friday, June 22nd, 10 am. Vern will be laid to rest at his country church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Mirage Flats, with a fellowship lunch to follow.
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you.

She attended Hay Springs High School,
graduating as valedictorian in 1960. Patsy met Richard Bridge while still in high school and a relationship began, one that would last more than 57 years. Patsy and Richard were married July 31, 1960 in the old Methodist Church in Hay Springs, with Richard wheeling her down the street in the wheelbarrow, a local tradition. They moved into the Alcorn
Apartments in Hay Springs where they welcomed Morgan Kay and Terry Ray.
In 1964, they purchased the LaForrest Willis acreage south of Hay Springs. They spent the next few years landscaping, remodeling, and improving the property. Kirby Lee was welcomed into the family during this time. Fond memories include building the garage, raising a large garden, and purchasing their
first cow, Mrs. Moo and Queenie, a Shetland pony. In 1965, Patsy began working as Executive Director at Sunset Heights, where she met many wonderful people developing fond memories for both she
and her family which continued long after she was no longer the Director. In 1970 the family moved to the Grandma Flora Hagedorn place southwest of Hay Springs, where Richard began farming and ranching. Wendy Lynn joined the family in 1971. Early in 1972, Patsy also assumed the duties of City Clerk for the City of Hay Springs and in May of 1972, Patsy assumed the position of Administrator of Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. She continued working as the Administrator until December 2009, when she retired after giving 37 years of her life caring for the elderly loved ones in the community. She took great pride in her role as Administrator and truly developed Pioneer Manor into be a place
“where Love and Hope abides”. Patsy was an accomplished cake decorator, with wedding cakes being her specialty. Many marriages throughout the Northwest Panhandle of Nebraska were blessed by a cake from Patsy, including the one with the baby toe imprint where Wendy “kicked” the cake as the cake was transported. Patsy was also a skilled seamstress, an avid gardener, and a talented quilter, winning many quilting awards. She was also an excellent cook, with her chicken on the bone and potato salad one of her family’s favorite dishes. She loved her flower gardens and yard, which brought her great peace and contentment. Patsy also loved to antique shop, attending many estate sales and scouring antique stores looking for “treasures” which now grace her home. Patsy loved her community, one she never left. She worked tirelessly on the Hay Springs Centennial celebration and
spent countless hours on the Centennial book. Patsy was continuously active. Even after retirement, she remained busy quilting, serving her church, and volunteering at the Dawes County museum, as
well as attending many of her grandchildren’s activities. Patsy’s greatest pride, joy and accomplishment was her family. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed hearing and participating in their lives. She was the consummate cheerleader, thrilled with the successes of her family, and also there when things did not go well, offering a shoulder to cry on, or listening and gently offering advice. She was the family source of wisdom and advice and the pivotal base
upon which her entire family revolved. Patsy is preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents, Jim and Hazel
Johnson and Richard’s parents James and Almira Bridge. Celebrating Patsy’s life are her children, Morgan Bridge, Terry (Dea) Bridge, Kirby (Kathy) Bridge, and Wendy (Rodney) Chasek. Elvera and Paul Rasmussen were married on March 19, 1949 and they settled on an irrigated farming unit on Mirage Flats (south of Hay Springs). Paul and his brother, Carl were the two best dancers in the country so Paul and Elvera and Carl and Mary Ann spent many a Saturday night dancing the night away. There were many meals shared with friends and family playing cards late into the night. Numerous trips were made to camp and fish with family and friends at Walgren Lake and Box Butte dam. They raised their four children on the farm: Fran, Dennis, Roger, and Robyn. They kept busy attending their children’s activities at School District # 56 and Hay Springs High School. She once cooked an entire meal for a Pioneer Manor board meeting and when she baked in the assisted living kitchen she shared her baked items with the Manor staff.
Elvera could be a prankster too-she once decorated a beautiful birthday “cake” (a sponge cake) for a friend’s birthday and when the friend tried to cut into the cake it was really tough! She had layered and decorated several large kitchen sponges! After her children left home she was a caregiver for ten years and drove a school bus for Mirage Flats School District #30 for fourteen years. She once saved one of her student’s lives by administering the Heimlich maneuver during a bus trip.
