Kathleen Marie Dann - June 09, 1963 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. On Monday April 15, 2024 Kathleen Marie Dann, age 60, of Cheboygan, MI passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Anchorage, Alaska on June 9, 1963, to Donald Wehmeyer and Genevieve Gobert. She grew up in Gwinn, MI, graduating from Gwinn High School.
Kathy met the love of her life, Timothy Dann, in 1983 at Teysens Restaurant in Mackinaw City. Excited to start their new lives together, the two married that same year on November 12, 1983. They moved to Texas in 1985 then back to Cheboygan, MI with their family in 1991. Kathy worked at H&H Tube Forming for many years up until their closure.
Kathy loved her boys more than anything. In fact, her boys often referred to her as Mama Bear; her boys were her world and if anyone crossed them, she made sure they heard about it. She was a great spouse, mother, and friend, but one of her favorite roles was being a nana. She wore all her titles proudly and cherished the time she spent getting her family together for gatherings, whether it was at home, on the water, or a short trip out of town. She cherished spending time with her four grandsons, and she spoiled them every chance she got, never failing to get them together for adventures like rock picking and geocaching, sleepovers, and just all-around good fun. Ensuring her family remained close was most valued by Kathy.
Everyone that knew Kathy knew how much she loved arts and crafts, and rock picking adventures. She was a woman of many talents, often gifting her creations to family and friends as well as others. To receive them was a treasure, whether it was a sentimental homemade card, dishcloth, or decoration for the house.
Kathy will always be remembered for her kindness, unwavering love, smile that remained with her until the end, and her ability to shine bright even in the darkest of days. We couldn't have asked for a better spouse, mom, nana, sister, and friend and we will greatly miss her every day. Kathy's memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her and had the privilege of knowing her.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Timothy Dann, her three sons, Ryan (Tabitha), Josh (Jaime), and Justin, four grandsons, Channce, Owen, Jaxon, and Tucker, and three brothers, Dave (Jan) of Gwinn, MI, Curtis of St. Paul, MN, and Stephen of Ann Arbor, Ml. She also leaves behind many close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Per Kathy's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Instead, we invite you to join us in celebrating Kathy's life through cherished memories and reflections. Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated during this time of mourning.

Barbara Jane Arkwood - January 13, 1930 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Jane Arkwood was born January 13, 1930, in Ocqueoc , to Alex and Susan King. She was the baby of the family and was adored by her older sisters Dee, Fern, Arlene, and Alice. Barbara was probably the original prototype for the barbie doll because her sisters treated her like a little doll. Barbara was a beautiful young girl who was full of spunk.
She moved to Pontiac at the age of 13 and got herself a job and took care of herself. She caught the eye of a young man from Millersburg, and Robert Dean and Barbara were wed on July 22, 1946. They married young and faced lots of ups and downs. Robert suffered a debilitating injury when he was 37, and Barbara once again went to work. Barbara worked at the circuit control factory in Harbor Springs and then worked and retired from the UAW. Robert and Barbara enjoyed their retirement years in Florida and Georgia. They loved to take long walks on the beach and Robert was known to go for walks in the fields at their farm and bring bouquets of flowers. Robert and Barbara had 7 children whom they loved and adored. Gary (Verna), Randy (Linda), Alger (Becky), Brad (Kathy), Julie (the late John Sobeck), Carol (Jeff Badgero) and Robert (Theresa). Family was EVERYTHING to Barbara. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren. She often said that she hoped to be able to see them graduate and grow up and be married. What a blessing that she was able to see all of her grandchildren into adulthood. She witnessed all of their graduations, several college graduations, weddings, and the joy of being a great grandma! She had 29 great grandchildren. Once again Barbara wished to see her great grandchildren reach milestones and she did! She watched many of them transition into adulthood and some even marry and make her a great great grandma! She had 3 Great great grandchildren. The day she passed away one of her great great granddaughters came to visit!
She was so happy when she was surrounded by family, and she beamed with joy when she had a visit, a phone call, or a card from her family. Family reunions were something that Barbara looked forward to every year. Barbara was an avid crafter and even owned a shop selling her crafts in Onaway for a while. She shared this love of crafting with her grandkids. She often made blankets for ALL of her kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and even her great greats. At 90 years old she completed blankets for each person in her family! Barbara LOVED to give gifts and always paid attention to everyone’s favorite color and favorite thing. She loved music and loved to tap her toes and kick her leg up to any music. Barbara danced her last dance here on earth, surrounded by her girls on April 8th and waltzed right on to heaven to join her ole cowboy, and dance partner Robert.

Departed: 04/02/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Bruce S. Price, age 92, of Onaway, died at home on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The son of William and May (Peterson) Price, Bruce was born in Allis Township on August 10, 1931. When he was fourteen years old, Bruce met Lois Stock. They married on April 9, 1949, in Onaway making this April 9th their 75th wedding anniversary.
Bruce worked full-time as a farmer, growing crops as well as raising dairy and beef cattle, before taking a position with the Presque Isle County Road Commission where he worked for 27 years and retired as the supervisor of the Onaway garage. During those 27 years, Bruce worked his 40 hours a week for the county, but farming was such a part of him that he continued to run the farm and raise livestock.
Working and farming kept Bruce busy, but he always managed to find time to enjoy the things he loved. Each summer he grew an amazing garden with plenty of vegetables for sharing and canning. His love for gardening, as well as his knowledge of plants, were shared with his daughters who are excellent gardeners also. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed deer hunting, bear hunting, fishing, and camping. As his brood of grandchildren grew, the camaraderie of hunting season and bear camp with his family was even more enjoyable for Bruce. He took fishing trips to Canada and the U.P. where he was quite successful at catching his limit of perch, walleye, and pike. He and Lois camped quite often at Mill Creek in Mackinac City, as well as throughout the U.P, and Canada, making many wonderful memories with friends and family. After many years of enduring harsh Northern Michigan winters and keeping the roads plowed for all of us, Bruce and Lois bought a place in Lake Panasoffkee, Florida. There, they enjoyed some much-deserved rest and relaxation with plenty of sunshine and Bruce even took up playing golf! And though he loved wintering in Florida, there’s no place like home, so Bruce was always ready to head back to the place he loved most...his home in Onaway.
Bruce Price was a hardworking man who was devoted to his wife for 75 years and loved spending time with his family. With his laid-back personality, nothing much ruffled his feathers. His love for his family and the outdoors will be fondly remembered and sadly missed.
Surviving Bruce is his wife of 75 years, Lois; son, Dale, of Onaway; daughters, Peggy (Ken) Nash, Wanda Teets, and Norma Grzesikowski, all of Onaway and Ruthann Rhodes (Jerry McCrumb) of Alabama.

His great grandchildren, Avery and Claire Bryon, Raechel (Jacob) Joseph, Abby (Adam) Drake, Brady Nash, Madison Reece, Zane, Zeb, Anka, and Owen Grzesikowski, Haley Grzesikowski, Collin, Caleb, and Sarah Grace Cole, Elijah and Aayanna Bonam, Quinten, Justyce, Courtney, and Akire Smith, Amelia Price, Christian and Michael, Charles, Zoey, Lilly, Jordan, Chloe, Kaylee, Annabella, and Vivian Teets.
And his great, great grandchildren, Maddie, Reily, and Annie Joseph, Aspen Drake, Xavier, Salem, and Sage Teets.
Bruce was preceded in death by three sons-in-law, Mike Teets, Alan Grzesikowski, and Doug Rhodes; brothers, Leo, Norman, Paul, and Wayne; and sisters, Keto Kimball and Freda Lemmon.
Cremation has taken place. Bruce will be honored by his family privately. His final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Bruce to Compassus Hospice at compassuslivingfoundation.org/give/.

Nancy Ann Bohm - July 20, 1973 - March 31, 2024

Departed: 03/31/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Ann Bohm, age 50, of Grayling, formerly of Onaway, died at home on Sunday March 31, 2024. She was born in Detroit on July 20, 1973, and was raised in Millersburg. Nancy graduated from Onaway High School in the class of 1992 and went on to further her education at Alpena Community College.
Through the years, Nancy worked several jobs, including cooking at the Millersburg Bar and working at McDonald’s in Cheboygan. Eventually she became an over the road truck driver which she genuinely loved. She was able to visit all fifty states and was immensely proud of the hundreds of photographs she took of interesting places and unique things she was able to see on her travels. Sharing her pictures and many stories about her time spent as a trucker always brought a smile to Nancy’s face.
To say Nancy was a movie buff would be an understatement! She especially enjoyed horror films, scary movies, and anything with Adam Sandler. She read books about vampires, jammed-out to a good variety of music, and enjoyed playing computer games. Nancy would color and do crafts for hours, enjoyed gardening, and loved looking for new recipes. A bit of a “foodie,” she always knew exactly how she wanted a recipe to taste. She also was an avid shopper who loved buying Avon products to add to her collection. She loved to be pampered by having her hair and make-up done with a photo shoot afterwards. Sharing stories about her family and reminiscing about her childhood brought Nancy much joy.
On February 3, 2011, Nancy was involved in a serious accident leaving her quadriplegic. Since that time, Nancy has touched the lives of all who have been involved in her care. Some of her caregivers have been with her for years, developing strong bonds and becoming more like a family to Nancy. It wasn’t always easy with Nancy as she could be a bit feisty and wasn’t afraid to say what she was feeling, but when she loved, Nancy loved big and wasn’t afraid to show it. She loved and trusted her caregivers and they loved her. Nancy’s big heart and sassy spunk will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Nancy is survived by her father, August “Bert” Poppenfuse of Onaway; sister, Terrie Poppenfuse of Montana; nephew, Kaysey; former husband, Loren “Al” Deline of Millersburg; her caregivers who she loved like family; and her dogs who held a special place in her heart, Rosie and Sable. She was preceded in death by her mother, Debra Poppenfuse (2023) and sister, Genevieve “Lynn” Samuel (2022).
A graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Millersburg at 1:00 PM on Tuesday April 9, 2024. Pastor James Brabson will officiate.

As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child” and with Grace’s love of children she welcomed them into her home with open arms. She loved showering her nieces, nephews, and the children of family and friends, with her undivided attention. She spent quality time with them, taught them, spoiled them with goodies, and always made sure they had plenty of fun. With Grace’s love of music there were singing sessions where she taught the kids gospel songs and classic hymns. There were many camping trips to Tomahawk Lake each summer with swimming, campfires, smores, and horseshoes. And all kids loved county fair time when Aunt Grace and Uncle Clayton treated them to a day of carnival rides, games, and fair food. Loving, nurturing, generous, and fun, Grace was an awesome aunt.
Besides spending time with her family, Grace enjoyed crafting. She painted, sewed, knitted, and made wood crafts. She loved to play board games, cards, and bingo. Through the years she belonged to the RLDS Church, the Community of Christ Church, and most recently the Remnant Church of Jesus. Christ. She was involved with church activities, including Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Throughout her life, Grace relied on her faith to overcome her struggles, most recently her declining health. Through prayer, she remained positive and hopeful. Departed: 03/11/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Barbara J. Ellenberger, age 72, of Onaway, died at Charlevoix Area Hospital on Monday March 11, 2024. The daughter of Frank and Josephine (Solf) Reinke, Barb was born in Rogers City on January 2, 1952.
On August 11, 1979, Barb and Thomas J. Ellenberger were united in marriage at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Rogers City and made their home in Onaway. To their union they were blessed with their son, Andrew, and eventually three grandchildren. Barb was a loving wife, a supportive and nurturing mother, and wonderful grandma who adored her grandchildren. With her heart full of love for each of them, she could not have been prouder of her family.
As a young girl, Barb attended St. Ignatius Catholic School before graduating from Rogers City High School in 1970. Barb furthered her education at Aquinas College where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and later went on to receive her master’s degree from Northern Michigan University. Gary William Hall, Sr. - January 15, 1942 - March 09, 2024

Departed: 03/09/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Gary William Hall, Sr., “Hawk,” age 82, of Cheboygan, died at home on Saturday March 9, 2024. Born in Cheboygan on January 15, 1942, he was the son of Sidney and Eileen (Rose) Hall.
Raised in Cheboygan, Gary was on track to graduate from Cheboygan High School in the class of 1960 when he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of seventeen. He was first stationed on a Navy submarine where he was a cook during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After testing and further training, he became a Radioman during the Vietnam War. One of Gary’s most dangerous duties in Vietnam was radio communications during helicopter evacuations of wounded soldiers from jungle skirmishes. After his honorable discharge, Gary lived in California and worked as a police officer in Los Angeles, before working in private security. He returned to Cheboygan in 1988 and took a manager position at Boyne Highlands.
Proud of his service, very patriotic, and an advocate for all veterans, Gary was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a lifetime member of the Indian River VFW Post where he previously served as Post Commander. He enjoyed collecting coins and loved gadgets. He was known for sharing his “Dad jokes” with everyone he talked to. Quite a character, any conversation with Gary usually ended or began with his extremely corny humor. He had a stubborn side and was tough as nails. Despite losing his arm in a motorcycle accident many years ago, Gary lived life to the fullest, never letting his injury stop him from doing anything. Well-liked and respected, Gary had many friends throughout Northern Michigan.
Gary is survived by his companion of 36 years, Barbara West of Florida; sons, Gary Jr. (Sandy) Hall of California and Gregg (Tawnya) Fuette of Utah; daughter, Christine (Tom) Bushman of Florida; four grandchildren; as well as his sisters, Cheryl Snider and Marilyn Evans, both of Cheboygan, and Chrissy of Oregon; brother, James “Jimmy” (Pam) Herzer of Gaylord; and many nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Sidney Hall; mother, Eileen Herzer Fitch; and brother, Dale Hall.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 15, 2024 at Pine Hill Cemetery in Cheboygan. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Gary to any veteran’s organization.

Antomino "Tony" Delia - August 13, 1935 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Antomino “Tony” Delia, age 88, of Onaway, formerly of Roseville, died at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey on March 6, 2024. The son of Gesue “Joseph” and Maria (Mirasala) Delia, Tony was born in Detroit on August 13, 1935. A veteran of the United States Army, Tony served honorably during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of VFW 1146 Bruce Post in St. Clair Shores.
A lifelong resident of Detroit and suburban Detroit, Tony moved to Onaway in 2021 to be nearer to his daughter and her family who he was very close with. For 62 years, Tony worked as a barber, so it is no wonder that his daughter followed in his footsteps, learned the trade, and went to Barber School. For more than thirty years Tony owned Anthony’s Barber Shop in Clinton Township where he employed his daughter to work by his side. As things in life often come full circle, Dorothy opened her own business, The Barber Shop, where Tony went to work after selling Anthony’s Barber Shop.
Tony was one of those people who was good at everything. When he tried doing something new, he always made it look easy. He was an excellent golfer on pace for the PGA Senior Tour a few years back, but a bout with cancer eliminated his chances for competing. Golfers try their entire careers to shoot a hole in one, some without success, but Tony shot his hole in one in 1988 at the Indian River Golf Club. Not only was Tony a fantastic golfer, but he was incredibly good at bowling as well. He bowled with all the elite bowlers in the best leagues in greater Detroit. Despite being a Detroiter his entire life, Tony was a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Being very handy and a skilled woodworker, Tony could fix or build just about anything. As a younger man, he enjoyed deer hunting, but in recent years his enjoyment came from seeing his grandsons bag their bucks.
Tony was proud and patriotic but also deeply connected to his Sicilian heritage. He was talented, hardworking, and generous. He had a tender heart, especially for his daughter. Tony loved spoiling her and teased her endlessly. He was set in his ways and at times was quite stubborn. He was funny with a wonderful sense of humor. Well-loved, he was the favorite uncle, an awesome grandpa, and a great grandpa who always had popsicles in the freezer for the great grandsons when they came to visit.
He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Dorothy Kammerer, of Black Lake; grandsons, Jason (MacKenzie) Kammerer of Millersburg, Alex (Jenna) Kammerer of Eastpointe, and Charlie Kammerer of Black Lake; great grandsons, Gavin and Colt Lane, as well as great grandson, Alexander, due to be born on March 19. Tony also leaves his sisters, Theresa Miller and Margie Bird; brother, Vince (Naomi) Delia of Rochester; and many nieces and nephews.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Maria Delia; brothers, Gasper, Philip, and Joe; sister, Grace Franklin; son-in-law, Charlie Kammerer; and friend, Andy Shaloy.
It was Tony’s wish that there be no services following his death. He will be honored by his family privately. His family suggests memorial gifts in support of the Onaway Ambulance Equipment Fund.

Janet Lynn Tallman - March 02, 1953 - February 20, 2024

Departed: 02/20/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Janet Lynn Tallman, age 70, of Kleber Pond (Onaway), died at home, unexpectedly, on Tuesday February 20, 2024. Born in Wyandotte, Michigan on March 2, 1953, Jan was the daughter of Earl and Irene (Boyea) Allaire. Blessed with 23 years of marriage at the time of his death, she and Richard “Dick” Tallman were united in marriage on December 23, 1992.
Jan graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1971 and went on to work as a bartender at several of Cheboygan’s watering holes, including Hammering Hanks, Club 27, The Gold Front, Frank’s Pub, and Evergreen. Jan’s personality made her an excellent bartender as she was outgoing, friendly, and made her customers feel welcome. She had attitude, was tough, and didn’t put up with crap (as she would say) yet was respectful and attentive to her customers. She was the best bouncer in the house, didn’t mince her words, and had no problem keeping up when the place was full. After many years of tending bar, Jan took a housekeeping position with Cheboygan Memorial Hospital where she worked until her retirement. After retiring, Jan earned spending money for her occasional visits to the casino by working at the concession stand at the Onaway Speedway.
An avid bowler, through the years Jan was on women’s bowling leagues at the Gold Front, Spare Time Lanes, and at Nautical Lanes in Rogers City. She played catcher on her women’s softball team in Cheboygan and traveled the state for softball tournaments during the summer months. She loved to read, play bingo online, and crochet. Thoughtful and generous, Jan made baby blankets for all the babies in the family. She absolutely loved living on Kleber Pond, where we might say she was the unofficial “Mayor of the Pond” because she knew everyone and everything that was going on. Jan loved her neighbors who were like family to her, being able to fish whenever she wanted, and watching the swans which were inspiration for her large collection of swan figurines.
Jan was known for being a gracious host and loved entertaining. She was an expert at cooking for a crowd; hosting many family reunions, holiday meals, and fish fries for her neighbors on the pond. She often made dinner for neighbors, friends, and family and was the best camp cook around. Each November, deer camp was held at Aunt Jan’s. The guys stayed with her and she cooked all their meals. One thing is for certain, it was always a great time and everyone’s bellies were full! In fact, no one who ever stopped at Jan’s house left without having a beverage or something to eat. She just plain loved making sure everyone was fed.
Jan was very close with her sisters and adored her nieces and nephews. When she and her sisters got together it was hard to say what would happen as they all had a little bit of a wild side! The three enjoyed traveling, going to the casino, and just being together. They had so many memorable moments including celebrating their birthdays together each year and their infamous vacation to Myrtle Beach.
It would be hard to find a person more genuine than Janet Tallman. With Jan, it was what you see is what you get, in fact, one of her sayings was “I’m a broad, not a lady!” She was as feisty and sassy as they come, yet kind, caring, and thoughtful. She was a gracious host who would do anything to help someone and was thankful for any help given to her. She showed her gratitude by cooking meals and baking cookies for those who helped her. It was not hard to know where one stood with Jan as she was honest and spoke her mind. She had a fantastic sense of humor and a nickname for everyone. One of a kind, Janet Tallman will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving Jan is her sister, Linda Davis, of Cheboygan; sisters-in-law, Diana Allaire and Mary (Ken) Asher; brother-in-law, Dick (Jane) LaFrinere; son, Rick (Cathy) Tallman and their family of Gaylord; stepdaughters, Tracey Charboneau and Carrie (Bill) Knaffle, and their families, both of Cheboygan; her nieces and nephews and their families who she was very close with, Jennifer White , Krissy (Mark) Beaubien, Jessica Allaire, Glen (Michelle) White, Rob (Jennifer) Rosenthal, and Dustin (Pauahi) Harris; as well as her dinner buddies, Dave and Chum; and her beloved 35 pound cat, Howie. Preceding Jan in death were her parents; husband, Dick Tallman; twin sister, Judy (Jim) Gahn; and her brother, Joseph Allaire.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday March 10, 2024 from 1 PM until 5 PM at the Cheboygan FOE, 626 North Main Street in Cheboygan. Jan’s family suggests that memorial gifts be made in support of Cheboygan County Humane Society, 1536 Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan, MI 49721. Please indicate in memory of Jan Tallman on the check memo line.

Patrick D. Preseau - August 04, 1953 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Patrick D. Preseau, age 70, of Onaway, died at home on Monday February 19, 2024. The son of Raymond and Mary (Scott) Preseau, Pat was born in Cheboygan on August 4, 1953. He spent his childhood years in Cheboygan and Marquette before moving to Onaway where he lived for most of his life.
A longtime employee of the City of Onaway, Pat worked for the Department of Public Works. A jack of all trades, his job included many duties but mainly he worked as a water services utility technician. He also had a little side business doing odd jobs, yard work, and keeping the grounds at the Onaway United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his side work very much and was especially fond of his customers.
To merely say, Pat cared deeply for people, animals, and the outdoors would be an understatement, as he proved this day in and day out in the way he lived his life. He found joy in helping others and was quick to say hello, strike up a conversation, or give a big hug. He had a special place in his heart for animals. He enjoyed feeding the birds, deer, and any other creatures who wanted a meal. And of course, he loved his fur babies. He and Linda’s assortment of dogs were his family and he adored every one of the entire pack.
Pat lived life to the fullest and loved an outdoor adventure. He was an avid fisherman, deer hunter, skier, rider, and ball player. He fished in bass tournaments and went on fishing trips with his buddies to the Two Hearted River. He enjoyed everything about Northern Michigan deer season…the preparation, the anticipation, the camaraderie, and the buck pole, not to mention the fabulous hunting stories which he was known to tell a few himself. This past November, Pat was proud to have bagged himself a dandy nine-point buck. His other outdoor hobbies included downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and riding his Harley Davidson. He skied with his wife, Linda and his late brother-in-law, Dave. He enjoyed all-day snowmobile safaris with friends and long rides on his motorcycle. A few years back he and his brother-in-law, Ray, rode their bikes out west to visit family. Pat and his brother, Mike, played men’s softball together, playing in numerous tournaments throughout the state.
A man of faith, Pat was a devoted member of the Onaway United Methodist Church and loved his church family. Social and very friendly, Pat will be remembered for his gift of gab. He loved to talk to everyone, often sharing one of his many fishing or hunting stories, leaving his listeners wondering if his tales were true, as Pat tended to enhance some of his stories! He certainly could spin a yarn and there are enough of his little sayings, “Patisms,” to write a book.
Pat leaves his wife, Linda, who he married 46 years ago on August 27, 1977; sister, Penny Ann Preseau and brother, Michael (Lynne) Preseau, both of Onaway; as well as his four dogs. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Virginia Malone; sister-in-law, Lisa (Pat) Waite; and brothers-in-law, Ray (Sharyn) Malone and Steve (Carol) Malone; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond Preseau Jr.; father-in-law, Harley Malone; and brother-in-law, David Malone.
Pat will be honored by his family privately. His family suggests that memorial gifts be made in support of Hospice of Michigan. Checks can be mailed to Hospice of Michigan, 989 Spaulding SE, Ada, MI 49301 or online at www.hom.org/donations. Please indicate the gift is being made in memory of Patrick Preseau on the memo line of the check.

Ella (Ellenberger) Droste Roberts - March 28, 1937 - January 31, 2024

Departed: 01/31/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Ella Faye (Ellenberger) Droste Roberts, age 86, of Onaway, died at Medilodge of Rogers City on Wednesday January 31, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 13th at Waverly Township Cemetery. Pastor James Brabson will officiate. Ella’s final resting place will be at Waverly Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Ella to the church of your choice.
The only daughter of George and Vivian (Strayer) Ellenberger, Ella was born in Onaway on March 28, 1937. She graduated from Onaway High School in 1954, went on to get her teaching certificate from County Normal, and then worked as a teacher in a one-room country schoolhouse. With the changes in requirements for teachers, Ella left the classroom to work as a secretary at the local radio station where she met her first husband, Paul Droste. They were married at the First Baptist Church in Onaway in December of 1961. To their union they were blessed with two daughters and a son. Though Paul and Ella eventually divorced, they remained good friends. Ella later married William Roberts Sr., “Bill,” on January 14, 1983, in Onaway. They made their home in Defiance, Ohio until Bill’s retirement in 2000 when they returned to their hometown to spend their retirement years. The were blessed with nearly 30 years of marriage at the time of Bill’s death on November 21, 2012.
A teacher, secretary, and factory worker were Ella’s vocations during her life, but her greatest job was being a wife and mother. Devoted to her family, she was selfless by putting their needs above her own. She encouraged them to be the best they could be. Her role as a mother and grandmother emphasized unconditional love, strength of spirit, and generosity. She was gentle, kind, and nurturing, yet had high expectations for her children and grandchildren. She loved her family above all, prayed for them constantly, and was proud of all their accomplishments.
Besides devotion to her family, Ella’s other great love was God. Strong in her Christian faith, she read the Bible and prayed every day. She was a member of the Onaway Baptist Chapel where she was the church pianist and a Sunday school teacher. She planned Christmas programs, church dinners, and gospel sings. In fact, through the years and the many places she lived and worshipped, Ella planned over one hundred gospel sings. A talented musician, Ella taught herself to play the piano, organ, and accordion. She played by ear, not learning how to read sheet music until after she had been playing for many years. Passionate about music, especially gospel music, Ella wrote her own songs and even made a record.
Ella was a longtime member of the Waverly Friendship Club. Her hobbies included knitting, tatting, writing letters, and sending cards. She knitted dish cloths, crocheted blankets, and tatted doilies, crosses, and beautiful Christmas bulbs. Throughout the year, Ella sent out hundreds of cards and letters, at the rate of six hundred postage stamps a year. She sent cards for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Christmas, and just because. Written with love, her letters were heartfelt and sent to friends, family, and sometimes to people she didn’t even know.
Ella accepted everyone with an open heart, open arms, and a perpetual smile. She had immense passion for her family, spiritual work, and music. She was gracious, kind, giving, and accepting. She had a way of finding good in everyone and every situation. Her prayer list was long as she prayed for everything and everyone. Short of performing miracles, Ella was a saint. And though she was a sweetheart with a gentleness about her, she also was tough. She spoke her mind when needed and had no issue voicing disappointment or disapproval. Being the baby sister to four older brothers, Ella was just a little protected, but she also knew how to stand her ground. She had a wonderful sense of humor, often joking or making funny remarks. As the little sister, she loved playing practical jokes on her brothers.
Ella will be missed and remembered by many lives she touched. She leaves her daughters, Joy (Gary) Elwell of Onaway and Ruth (Dan) Reid of Dade City, Florida; son, Paul Droste (Carla Lemmon) of Onaway; foreign exchange student son, Jose Hernandez of Alcapolco, Mexico; stepdaughters, Regina (Rick) Franks of Amarillo, Texas and Rebecca Roberts of Port Huron; stepson, Bill Roberts Jr., as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Fred Ellenberger of Onaway; sisters-in-law, Beverly Ellenberger of Saginaw, Lola Ellenberger of Millersburg, and Ginger Swoffer of Port Huron; brothers-in-law, Jack Roberts of Lake Orion and Gary (Jane) Roberts of Cheboygan; her former husband and good friend, Paul Droste and his wife, Kathy, of Frankenmuth; and many nieces and nephews.
Ella was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Roberts Sr.; stepdaughter, Kelly Grantz; brothers, Samuel, Edward, and Larry; and sisters-in-law, Bethel and Vivian Ellenberger.

Randell Charles McLean - April 18, 1954 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: After a courageous and heroic battle, Randell Charles McLean, 69, of Onaway peacefully passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024.
Born on April 18, 1954, in Onaway, Randy was the son of Robert and Kaye (Kesselring) McLean. He attended Onaway Schools, where he participated in basketball and football. Randy earned the honor of Eagle Scout and was an altar boy at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Upon graduation in 1972, Randy began his career as a lineman at Presque Isle Electric & Gas Cooperative, which spanned over fifty years. He thoroughly enjoyed his job and those that he worked with, creating lifelong friendships. In addition to his work as a lineman, Randy served as Union Steward for Local Union 876, was a volunteer fireman with years serving as Assistant Chief, taught Adult Education woodworking classes, served as a CDL instructor for the area, coached baseball, operated McLean’s Welding and Metal Fabricating, and formed Shoreline Development to bring his numerous property development projects to fulfillment. Randy will be remembered as one of the hardest working men, passing his work ethic down to his children and grandchildren.
Randy loved and always looked forward to his fall fishing trips to Ontario, where he would fish for pike and walleye with family and friends. In the early 1990’s, Randy purchased forty acres to create our beloved family retreat, The Cabin. He purchased a separate parcel of property in Cheboygan for the primary purpose of harvesting the logs off of it. Randy stocked a beautiful pond with bluegill so that his grandchildren would acquire his love of fishing. It was one of his best accomplishments and a place for everyone to gather and enjoy time together.
Randy’s greatest joy and proudest moments came in his role as grandfather. He adored his grandchildren and wanted to continually create lifelong memories with them. From annual kayaking trips on the Black River, to strawberry picking, decorating Christmas cookies, horse drawn sleigh rides, Easter egg hunts, fishing trips, time together at hunting camp, and a trip to look at Christmas lights in a fifteen-passenger van just so Randy could see all of his grandchildren’s reactions at once. Randy desired to experience life through his grandchildren’s eyes. He proudly supported and attended their sporting events, with the ability to go from Cardinal Red to Bulldog Blue sometimes in the same game.
Randy is survived by his wife, Cammy, of Onaway, his son, Erin (Allison) McLean of Onaway, his daughter, Abbey (Scott) Monthei of Indian River, and stepson Ryan (Rachel Nave) Reiger of Onaway. His loving grandchildren Morgan (Caitlyn), Madison, and Malaurie McLean, Ian, Mara, Ryann, and Tara Clancy, Amanda, Olivia, Katie, and Molly Monthei, and Stevie Reiger. Randy leaves behind his brothers Russell (Sue) McLean and Robert McLean, sisters Colleen (Tom) Greenwood, Patricia (Jim) Van Haaren, and Kerry (Keith Wilcox) Cruse, and half-sister Linda (Jamie) Walters, along with many nieces and nephews. Randy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Darrell McLean and Todd McLean, and niece Lindsey McLean.
In accordance with Randy’s wishes, the family will hold a private graveside service and burial in the Spring.

John J. McAfee - July 06, 1939 - January 27, 2024

Departed: 01/27/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: John Joseph McAfee, known as Jack, age 84, of Black Lake (Cheboygan), died at home unexpectedly on Saturday January 27, 2024. The son of John T. and Catherine (Kulczynski) McAfee, Jack was born at home in Highland Park, Michigan on July 6, 1939. Blessed with 60 years of marriage, he married Jean L. Olson on October 12, 1963, at the Redford Presbyterian Church. Self-employed, Jack worked as a lithographer in the printing industry. He owned and operated a trade shop, Wright Process, until his retirement in 2004.
Jack first visited Black Lake in 1961 when Jean’s parents owned a summer cottage on the lake. Through the years they spent many vacations there. After retiring, Jack and Jean moved from their home in Livonia to live at Black Lake permanently. Moving to Northern Michigan suited Jack well as he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and deer hunting. He joined the golf league at Rippling Rapids Golf Course where he also was a volunteer for the annual Area 33 Special Olympics Golf Tournament. Jack volunteered with the Sturgeon Guard program to protect the sturgeon at their spawning sites on the Black River as well as volunteering with the Feeding America organization. He was a longtime Mason, currently with the Rogers City Masonic Lodge and previously a dad advisor for Masonic associated organization for young men, DeMolay International. Jack belonged to the Redford Presbyterian Church for fifty years before joining St. Paul Methodist Church in Cheboygan where he has been a member for the last twenty years.
An avid fan of football, Jack’s favorite teams were the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions. Through the glory of winning seasons and the heartbreak and disappointment of losing seasons, there was an unbreakable bond between Jack and his teams making it altogether fitting that this past season he was able to see the Wolverines win the National Championship and witness the best season in the Detroit Lions history. Strong in his conservative values, Jack watched Fox News regularly and was always open to debate politics, especially with his granddaughter. He was patriotic with a great love of the United States as well as loyal, resilient, and trusted. With his strength of character, he stood up for what he believed in and had a strong faith in God. Most of all, Jack loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a supportive father, and a proud grandfather.
Jack leaves his wife, Jean, of Black Lake; sons, John (Susan) of Redford and Jeff (Laurie) of Livonia; grandchildren, Kristen (Craig), Jessica, Emily (Alex), John, Carl, Erin, James, and Sean; as well as four great grandchildren, Andrew, Benjamin, Evelyn, and Daphne. Carol J. Latsch - August 03, 1937 - January 24, 2024

Departed: 01/24/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Carol J. Latsch, age 86, of Onaway, died on January 24, 2024, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. The daughter of George and Hilda (Bowles) Wregglesworth, Carol was born in Onaway on August 3, 1937. She graduated from Onaway High School in 1955 and then went to County Normal briefly before moving downstate to work. It was there that she met Dale Latsch who she married on January 4, 1956, in Angola, Indiana. Within a few years, Carol and Dale became the parents of a daughter and two sons.
It was with great determination that Carol kept her home and raised her family as an attentive mother and devoted wife, all while attending college at Central Michigan to receive her degree in special education. She eventually obtained her master’s degree and was very close to completing her PhD. Carol made her career with the COPESD where she worked as a special education educator until her retirement in 1997.
Following retirement, Carol opened Still Meadow Bed and Breakfast where her guests were treated to her amazing home-cooking and wonderful hospitality. Carol’s breakfast included homemade casseroles, soft-gooey cinnamon rolls, farm eggs, fresh-baked bread, and jams and jellies made with handpicked wild berries. An avid berry picker, Carol could spend an entire day picking and go the next day for more. Each summer the huckleberries, blackberries, and wild raspberries she gathered were lovingly made into homemade jam which she often gave to friends and family. Carol’s Bed and Breakfast was surrounded by her beautiful flower gardens that she spent countless hours working in. Digging, planting, weeding, and watering were a labor of love for Carol. When her perennials were ready to split, she divided them to share with others who loved gardening as much as she did. Carol’s knowledge and expertise in the kitchen and garden were second to none.
When the winter months were upon her, not allowing for all the outdoor activities she loved, Carol spent her time painting and quilting. Quite artistic, she painted colorful flower blooms from watercolors and even made some of her artwork into greeting cards. Meticulous in her stitches, Carol made the most beautiful hand-made quilts. Each week she met with her sewing and quilting pals in the basement of her church to work on their quilting projects and quilted with the Thunder Bay Quilting Guild in Atlanta.
Carol enjoyed traveling. She and Dale visited South America several times and traveled to England as well. She enjoyed fishing trips to the most remote lakes in Canada where it was an adventure just to get there. Carol loved every minute of the treacherous, white-knuckle trek into the nearly inaccessible, secluded lakes where there wasn’t a soul around. Here favorite was Dossier Lake where she reeled in plenty of Brook Trout. Very adventurous and quite independent, at the age of eighty, Carol made a solo trip to Prince Edward Island in Canada. She absolutely loved the majesty of nature and the outdoors. Drawn to the water, the sounds of a flowing river or the beauty of a Northern Michigan lake always refreshed Carol’s soul.
Strong in her Christian faith, Carol was a longtime member of the Onaway Community of Christ Church where she was active with church activities and served as a priest to the congregation. She was a member of the Smiling Circle Club, Stepping Stones Garden Club, Thunder Bay Quilt Guild, and a former volunteer for hospice. Carol was a member the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel previously serving as area director and was currently serving on the Allis Township Zoning Board.
Carol was fiercely independent, tough as nails, and enthusiastic in all her endeavors. She was a wonderful homemaker who cooked, baked, and made a welcoming home with her graciousness. She was devoted to her family, her church, and to God. She prayed often and relied on God in times of trouble to give her peace and understanding.
Carol is survived by her sons, Brandon (Sharon) Latsch of Cheboygan and Mitchell (Jane) Latsch of Erin, Tennessee; daughter, Vanessa Latsch of Maywood, Missouri; grandchildren, Chelsea, Duane, Isabelle, Meghan, Caroline, Ashley, Michelle, and Joseph; several great grandchildren; as well as her sister, Leora (Mark) Dean of Onaway; brothers, Richard (Leota “Boots”) Wregglesworth of Onaway and Brian (Debbie) Wregglesworth of Wasilla, Alaska; sisters-in-law, Marion Wregglesworth and Eleanor Wregglesworth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale, on October 14, 2018; brothers, Terry, Ralph “Jim”, and Charles Wregglesworth as well as her infant brother, George. Visitation will be held at Chagnon Funeral Home from 4 pm – 6 pm on Sunday January 28, 2024, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM on Monday January 29, 2024, at the Community of Christ Church in Onaway. Family friend Cosette Rhein and Priest Carolyn Beck will officiate. Carol’s final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family has suggested memorial contributions to an organization dear to Carol’s heart, Outreach International, at www.oionline.org /Give!

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Onaway)
Obituary Preview: Muriel Ellen Reutter, aged 83, was called to her eternal rest on January 19, 2024. Born on June 26, 1940, in Detroit, to Ellen and Everett Brown, she lived a life marked by humility, a profound respect for all of God's creation, and an unwavering dedication to her cherished family. Her final days were spent in the sanctuary of her home, surrounded by family.
Left to honor Muriel's legacy are her devoted daughter, Laurie, along with Laurie's children, Scott, Elissa, Cherie, and Jessica; her sons, William, Michael, accompanied by his children, Stefanie and April, and Richard, with his son, Brandon. Her great-grandchildren, Zoë, Stella, Lorelei, Carolaine, and Gunner, will miss the gentle presence of their great-grandmother. Muriel now joins in Heaven her husband, Hugh, mother, Ellen, father, Everett, grandson, Brandon Haneckow, and her infant sisters, who preceded her in death.
Throughout her years, Muriel's career at AT&T was characterized by an unwavering work ethic and a spirit of service that left an indelible mark on her colleagues and the broader community. Muriel's faith was an integral part of her life, and she was a devout member of St. William Parish. Her life was a living testament to her values of gratitude, kindness, and reverence. In the quiet sanctuary of her garden, Muriel found a special connection to the divine, nurturing the earth with the same love and care she bestowed upon her family. After trying every spring for decades, the seeds from the Queen Anne's Lace grew for the first time this past summer.
The Reutter family invites friends, loved ones, and fellow parishioners to join in a Funeral Mass to celebrate Muriel's life of faith and love. The service will be held at St. William Parish in Walled Lake on January 30th at 10 AM, where we will gather in fellowship to offer our prayers and thanksgiving for the blessing that was Muriel's life on this earth. In memory of Muriel, we give thanks for her example of a life well-lived, for the grace she extended to others, and for the peace she now finds in the arms of the Almighty. May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
