Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to share the news with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life and be able to capture their personality and spirit in the writing.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or via email, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that their life is celebrated in the way they want. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or revised by family members or funeral home staff.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and accomplishments.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options. Funeral homes may also offer package deals that include obituary publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's not possible to make significant changes to an obituary once it's been published. However, minor corrections may be allowed. It's essential to proofread carefully before submission to ensure accuracy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may publish within a day or two of submission, while online platforms may post immediately.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including meaningful quotes or lyrics can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's values or spirit.

What if I don't have all the information needed for an obituary?

If you're missing certain details, you can still write a meaningful obituary. Focus on the aspects of the person's life that you do know well, and consider reaching out to other family members or friends for input.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues surrounding the person's death or personal life, it's best to approach them with care and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or a trusted advisor before deciding what to include.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Including information about charitable donations can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and continue their legacy.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance, consider reaching out to a funeral home staff member or professional obituary writer for assistance.

How do I share an online obituary with others?

You can share online obituaries via social media platforms, email, or messaging apps. Many online platforms also provide sharing tools or links that make it easy to distribute.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites offer a unique way to celebrate someone's life and provide a lasting tribute. They can include photos, stories, videos, and other memories.

What if I want to publish multiple obituaries for different audiences?

You can tailor separate obituaries for different publications or platforms based on your audience. For example, you might write one for local newspapers and another for social media or online platforms.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy, verify facts with multiple sources whenever possible. Double-check dates, names, and spellings before submitting the final version.

Can I include condolences or messages from others in an obituary?

Sometimes! While traditional print newspapers might not allow this, online platforms often provide space for condolences or guestbooks where others can leave messages.
