Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist with writing the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to celebrate the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are often shorter due to space constraints, while online obituaries can be longer and more detailed. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-300 words.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication fee.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

Is it necessary to include a cause of death in an obituary?

No, it's not necessary to include the cause of death in an obituary. However, some families may choose to do so if they feel it's relevant or important to share this information with others.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or updates, while others may not. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to ensure accuracy and completeness.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Online obituaries are often published immediately after submission, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I request corrections or changes to an existing obituary?

Yes, if you find errors or inaccuracies in an existing obituary, contact the publication or platform directly to request corrections. They will work with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?
