Joe Brown Banks - November 02, 1930 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Manchester)
Obituary Preview: Manchester, Tennessee – Mr. Joe Banks, age 93, of Manchester, TN, passed from this life Friday, March 15, 2024, at his home in Manchester, TN.
Mr. Banks was born in Manchester, TN to his late parents Andrew and Throna Banks. He and his first wife, Verna, were married for 56 years. Joe loved his family, loved the farm life, and loved construction. He was always building something and worked construction all of his life. Mr. Banks worked for many companies over the years, including B&C Construction with his brother-in-law Verne Carlisle, which was his first company. After, he went on to work for Hardaway Construction, Sain Construction, RPI and then owned and operated Banks Home Builders with his son, Mike. When he wasn’t working construction, you could find him living the farm life raising cows and hogs over the years. You could always find him on a tractor in the hayfield and when not on the tractor, he would be found in his massive garden that he grew yearly to feed all the neighbors.
Joe met his second wife, Virginia Black, at the Pickin Parlor in 2007 and they married November 2, 2008.
They loved to listen to music and dance. They enjoyed traveling and running the roads. They loved planting, growing, cooking, and “putting up” fresh vegetables and couldn’t pass by a farmers market, produce stand or an orchard without stopping. They would sit side by side and do search word puzzles. They read and studied the Bible every night as well.
Virginia had a stroke in November of 2011. Joe was her sole (soul) caretaker until she had to go to the nursing home. He was completely devoted to her, feeding her when she no longer could herself and even applied her makeup. It was amazing to witness.
Joe loved the Lord, he loved both of his wives, loved his family and loved the land that was such a part of him. He was the last hero I had left.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Andrew Banks; first wife, Verna Carlisle Banks; second wife, Virginia Black Banks; sister, Hazel Banks Denney; brothers, William “Dub” Banks, Infant Elroy Banks, and Horace Banks; grandson-in-law, Jeremy Brian Warren.
Mr. Banks is survived by daughter-in-law, Shannon Brewer Banks; grandson, Stephen Andrew “Andy” Banks (Tammy); granddaughter, Mindy Warren Sanders (Matt); great grandsons, Zachary Banks (Samantha), Cody Warren, and Remington Banks; great granddaughters, Belle Sanders, Lily Sanders, Khylee Harshman, Gari Harshman; a host of nieces and nephews; special friend, Coreena Robertson; and beloved cat, Bud.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Central Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 18, 2023, at 2:00pm in the chapel of Central Funeral Home with Bro. Danny Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Fredonia Cemetery in Coffee Co.
The family would like to thank Adoration and Hospice Compassus for their wonderful care during Joe’s illness. Central Funeral Home is honored to serve the Banks family, 931-723-7774, centralfuneralhome.com

Walter Leroy Elliott, Jr. - May 09, 1949 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Manchester)
Obituary Preview: Manchester, Tennessee - On March 1, 2024, Walter Leroy Elliott, Jr. passed away due to cancer after a short hospital stay at the age of 74.
Known interchangeably as Walter to his family and “Walt” to his friends, he was born on May 9, 1949 in Gallatin, TN. Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, work colleague, and friend. Walter graduated from Gallatin Senior High and later attended undergraduate and graduate school at Tennessee Technological University. For most of his adult life, he lived in north Knoxville and Hixson, TN, before moving to Manchester, where he quickly became a fixture in Coffee County. Walter was a mechanical engineer by education and a nuclear engineer by vocation. He was a long-time employee of the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1973-2004, serving as engineering manager at Watts Bar and Sequoyah Nuclear Stations, and Vice President of the Fossil Power Group. He then proceeded to retire and “unretire” four times, serving in consultant and executive roles for ARES, Shaw E&I, and SUN Technical. He was an active member of the Arlington church of Christ (serving as a deacon), Hixson church of Christ (serving as a deacon and elder), and Forest Mill church of Christ, where he was involved with the initiation of a ramp building ministry for the disabled, which has dramatically expanded its outreach during his service. He also volunteered with two local food banks in Manchester and helped with the monthly Outreach meal. He taught adult Sunday School classes at church for many years and delighted in taking part in small groups and numerous men’s morning Bible study groups. He supported numerous missionaries and traveled on several mission trips, including to China. Walter was an avid outdoorsman, as evidenced by his many hunting trips out west, bringing home numerous trophies. He delighted in handing out the meat he brought home or making his famous spicy beef jerky to share with family and friends. Walter also loved motorcycles, Corvettes, boating, bicycles, hiking, watching UT sports and soccer, and finding deals on firearms in local pawn shops. Walter, or “Wally Speedo”, was well known to many Tennessee highway patrolmen. Later in life, he became an expert in turning hand-crafted wooden bowls and gave away most of them, insisting on keeping a meticulous log of “who got what.” He was known for his compassionate spirit, desire for service of others, charming personality, and very dry sense of humor. He collected scores of friends during his lifetime from all of the places he lived, worked, traveled, and attended church.
Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Diane, his son, Benjamin, and his parents Walter Leroy Elliott, Sr. and Mary Ruth Elliott. He is survived by daughter Gina Wilson of Soddy Daisy, TN, son Steve (Jennifer) of Brentwood, TN, sister Anne Barnes of Lebanon, TN, and Nancy (Charlie) Glover of Gallatin, TN. An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial services. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

How long should an obituary be?
