William Raymond Tomassoni - June 22, 1931 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Eveleth)
Obituary Preview: Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at United in Christ Church in Eveleth, to be preceded by visitation at 10:00 a.m. A reception to follow at United in Christ immediately after the service.
William R. Tomassoni, age 92, a lifelong resident of Eveleth passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024. He was born on June 22, 1931 in Eveleth, Minnesota, the son of William (Pucky) and Josephine (Mashuga) Tomassoni.
Bill was a kind, optimistic, fun-loving, down-to-earth, loyal, strong and caring person. Bill brought people together with his charisma, warm and charming personality, which lit up a room, coupled with his gift of storytelling and coining his own phrases. He was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Bill loved spending time with his friends and family and being the center of attention in his Nip Nook at the cabin, where he invited family and friends to partake in “Kanoopers” with him. He also was a great bowler, fisherman and deer hunter. Bill was very proud of his Italian heritage and belonged to the Italian American Club and the Son’s of Italy.
Bill also was an avid sports fan who religiously watched the Twins, Vikings, the Timberwolves, and the Wild in addition to golf, bowling as well as any such other sporting event that may be on the television. Bill had a very close special relationship with his twin brother Bob, who passed away on September 16, 2022. Bill and Bob celebrated their birthdays every year together with a party with friends and family and talked on the telephone together several times a day, every day, which conversations were known for their brevity, i.e. “Hi Bobby”; “Hi Billy”; “How are you?”; “Fine”; “Good game hey”; “Yes”; “Okay, talk to you later”; “Ok, bye”.
Bill went to school in Eveleth and worked at U.S. Steel Mintac for 34 years and retired at age 55. After Bill retired, he spent every summer at his cabin on Lake 14 with his wife Donna. Bill and Donna would have been married 70 years on October 16, 2024.
Bill is survived by his wife Donna, daughter Kris Tomassoni (John Uhrbom), his sister Sharon Roos (Leroy), his grandchildren, Ashley Tomassoni (Jason Henderson), Colten Hennis, and Jonah Hennis (Ashley Wegner) and great-granddaughter Adison Henderson, as well as nieces and nephews, and other extended family. In addition, Bill was blessed to have his Lake 14 family, Jim and Lynda Hawkinson and John and Karen Trimble, and his wonderful and caring Eveleth neighbors, Ray Childs and the Mavec family.
Bill also had a very special relationship with John Uhrbom. As Bill lost his own son, Billy-John in 1992, he considered John his “son” and loved him dearly. John was also the lucky benefactor of Bill’s telephone conversations that lasted about 30 seconds, but which happened several times each day. Bill was very grateful for John’s presence in his life and loved having “Kanooper’s with him.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, William Tomassoni; his mother, Josephine Tomassoni; his son, William John Tomassoni; his twin brother, Robert Tomassoni; and his grandson Wesley Tomassoni.
Bill will be remembered as a tender-hearted, and kind man, a true treasure, who will be missed immensely by those whose lives he touched.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a historical record, providing valuable information for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details, charitable donation information, and other relevant data.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the obituary more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, contact the publication's obituary department directly. They will provide guidance on their specific submission requirements and deadlines.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their legacy is preserved and to spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only the most basic information. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the deceased person's life.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help make the obituary more engaging and memorable.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there is sensitive information about the deceased that you're unsure about including, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit it. Remember that an obituary is intended to be a celebration of the person's life, not a platform for controversy or drama.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's values and legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may have a delay of several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this is not always possible, so it's essential to proofread carefully before submission.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or flat fees.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, many online platforms allow you to publish an obituary solely online. This can be a cost-effective option and provides greater flexibility in terms of content and design.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with others who knew them.

What is a memorial website?

A memorial website is an online platform where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences for the deceased. These sites often remain active for years after the initial posting.

Can I include quotes or poetry in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or poetry that resonate with the deceased person's spirit or values can add depth and meaning to the obituary.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complicated family relationships in an obituary?

In situations where there are multiple marriages or complicated family relationships, it's essential to approach the writing process with sensitivity and tact. Consider seeking guidance from a funeral director or counselor if needed.

Can I include information about pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family, so including information about beloved pets can be a touching tribute.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook provides a space for friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and celebrate the life of the deceased. It can serve as a meaningful way to connect with others during a difficult time.

How long does an online obituary remain active?

The duration that an online obituary remains active varies depending on the platform or website. Some may remain active indefinitely, while others may have a limited timeframe (e.g., 30 days).
