Obituary Preview: Harrison Benjamin Payton was born in King George County, Virginia on March 6, 1929, to the late Silas Payton and Alberta Hodge. He quietly put on his gold and white wings to fly peacefully home on July 24, 2023.
Affectionately known to family and friends as “Granddad”, “Uncle Harrison”, “Harry” or “Hus”, he would always find time to give a hand up, and was often willing to help those in need. He’d be helping you and under his breath fussing about it at the same time, but his help was indeed appreciated and was sincere. If he saw you, he would size you up and give you a “new” name HE wanted you to have. For instance, he called one of his friends “Scooder Rooter”, a niece “Mitsubishi”, a friend “Gravel Gertie”, another friend “Puster Gut” and so on. But he was quiet, content, always watching, a father figure and mentor to many family members and others that he encountered.
Mr. Payton served his country as an active member in the U.S. Army. That gave him an opportunity to see how the World was while spending time in both Korea and Japan.
He lived in Washington D.C. for many years then moved to Prince Georges County, Maryland in his later years. He retired from Bakery & Confectionary Industry International as a truck driver.
Preceding Harrison is one daughter (Valerie Payton), one son (Alonzo Simons – “Bay Jack”), five brothers (James Peyton, Robert Payton, John Payton, George Peyton, Charles Peyton) and one Sister, (Charlotte Canada).

Geraldine M. Cole - July 12, 1955 - July 06, 2023

Departed: 07/06/2023 (Port Royal)
Obituary Preview: Geraldine Marie Cole was born on July 12, 1955, to parents James Dudley and Mary Agnes Elizabeth (Dorsey) Cole. She was educated in the Charles County, Maryland Public School System, where she graduated from LaPlata High School, LaPlata Maryland.
After graduating from High School, she was employed by Charles County Board of Education where she worked in the printing department for approximately 10 years. She took a brief hiatus to raise her twins, daughters Cherika and Cheneka. She was then employed by the United States Postal Service where she worked for 23 years until her retirement in October of 2020.
Geraldine was a very gifted artist. In her younger years she expressed that gift through her pencil sketches, embroidery, painting and sewing. One of her favorite things to sketch was television characters (actors). One sketch she cherished was her depiction of Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford, from the comedy series Sanford and Son. She also displayed her artistry through fashion. She would draw designs on her jeans and t-shirts and then embroider her designs to upscale the looks. She also showed her love for fashion by making paper dolls for her younger sisters, designing the outfits she envisioned in her mind for the dolls to wear. Her art was of such quality that the FBI was interested in her becoming a Forensic Sketch Artist, but she was not interested in pursuing that path.
Geraldine was a strong disciplinarian she did not accept her daughters misbehaving especially in school. Her daughters would tell of the time when one of them got into trouble and Geraldine was called to the school. In order to teach them a lesson Geraldine placed flour on her face and rollers in her hair and showed up in their school wearing a robe and bedroom slippers.
Geraldine was determined and had a strong will. You never had to wonder what she was thinking about because she didn’t hesitate to tell you. That strong will served her well during the latter months of her illness. In April of 2023 Geraldine was in the hospital and her family received a call to come to the hospital because she was not expected to survive the night, not only did she survive that night, but God restored her strength and she lived for 3 months more. She was able to come home and enjoy her family and friends. She had game nights with the family, she enjoyed outings, such as going to the beach and restaurants. Thanks to the love and dedication of her children, grandchildren, and good friend and cousin Christina Smith she was able to LIVE out her final days surrounded by love.
Geraldine knew that no matter what ever achievements a person may accomplished in life, it would be meaningless if you do not have a relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was baptized at Salem Baptist Church, in King George, VA. She also served on the Usher Board for a short period of time.
She was preceded in death by her parents James Dudley and Mary Agnes Elizabeth (Dorsey) Cole; her sisters Mary C. and Barbara Ann Cole; brothers Joseph, Phillip, and Bernard Cole. She is survived by her daughters, Cherika Cole, (fiance’ Jamaal), Cheneka Bailey, (husband Michael). Grandchildren Corvion Davis, Xavier Cole, Cynari Davis, Amir Cole, Camari Davis, Jasiah Cole (Bailey). Great grandson Kayveon Davis, Milton Harvey, (father of her children). Brothers Harold Cole, (wife Vivian), Pearl Cole, (wife Tina). Sisters Virginia Farmer, (husband Joseph), Shirley Thomas, (husband
Charles), Veronica Baylor, Charlotte Holton, (husband Antwan, now deceased); Catherine Proctor, Dorothy Bennett, (husband Alvin), Cecilia Cole, Audrey Cole and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Despite the contract changing multiple times, her employment was continuous for almost 47 years. In April 2023, she retired from Alutiiq Commercial Enterprises, a contracting company and employer. Thelma was a dedicated employee and continued to work while battling an illness. Upon her retirement, the Technical Director of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division gifted her a Technical Director’s coin to show their appreciation for exceptional support and job well done. Although Thelma was not a federal government employee, it was a great honor to receive this coin as a civilian.
Additionally, Thelma worked for the White Packing Company in Dogue, VA, and as a housekeeper for the Dennison family in King George, VA.
Thelma was loved by many whom she encountered. She left a memorable impression on people at Dahlgren, the bank, the grocery store, the church, the doctor’s office, family, etc. She had the most generous heart, an infectious laugh, a humble spirit, but was no pushover.
Amongst Thelma’s spiritual gifts, serving was a major part of her life. She was an exceptional cook and known for her many delicious dishes especially her “delectable” corn pudding. She used her gift of cooking during family gatherings, and on very special occasions. The dinner was not complete unless Thelma’s corn pudding was on the menu. In addition to cooking, she was a loving caregiver. This was demonstrated in the way she tended to her brother William, and her husband Mack during their later years. Colossians 3:23-24, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
Thelma was an avid fan of drag racing. In fact, she won a trophy for participating in an unofficial neighborhood drag race with friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Herman McNeal Williams; her son John Walter (“Mann”) Bushrod, and 9 of 11 siblings: John Bushrod, Violet Bushrod, William Bushrod, Pearl Smith (Benjamin Smith), Julia Murphy (William Murphy), Luellen Bushrod (Bertha Bushrod), Samuel Bushrod (Teeny Bushrod), and Russell Bushrod.
Thelma leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Annie Bushrod and Clarice Hairston, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Nothing was out of order when it came to the kitchen and the Pastor’s study which was immaculate. Annie was truly a faithful servant and reverenced the Lord and His house of worship. She would often say to those who dedicated their life to Christ. “Don’t play with the Lord”. Due to her health, she was unable to attend services on a regular basis and often would say. “I need to go to church,” it was always in her heart. Deacon William Johnson always held a special place in Annie’s heart and she always acknowledged William Johnson as “This is Deacon Johnson.”

Annie looked forward to Christmas, baking all night her homemade chocolate chip cookies for her nephews and nieces. We all made sure we got our cookies. What a treat! She performed her occupation as domestic worker passionately, efficiently, and faithfully. Elizabeth was innovative, and ahead of her time. She was pro education; able to teach her daughter to read and write before first grade when there was no kindergarten. Departed: 02/10/2023 (Port Royal)
Obituary Preview: Quietly and peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2023, God, in His infinite mercy, called our beloved Ruth home into eternal rest.
Ruth Celethia Ashton-Lewis was born in King George, Virginia on December 21, 1926. She was the fourth of ten children born to the late Deacon William F. Ashton and Deaconess Mary P. Ashton.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined the Salem Baptist Church in Shiloh, Virginia. She attended this church until she moved from the area as a young woman. Eventually she returned home and resumed her membership at Salem Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her health began to fail.
She was a graduate of Edgehill Training School in King George, Virginia, class of 1945. The class of 1945 consisted of only three students, Ruth, her brother Ralph, and first cousin Thelma Jones. The Edgehill Training School later became what we know as Ralph Bunche, where she also has been a life time member of the Ralph Bunche Alumni Association. After graduation, she moved to Philadelphia and became a hair stylist. Discovering that hair styling was not
her passion, she moved to Washington, DC. with support of family and friends. She was able to secure a position with the Federal Government, working for the US Department of State until she retired in 1986. During her time at the State Department, she also had a part-time job during this time because she had a dream to one day own and live in a house. That dream came true in 1970 when she had her home built and was able to return to King George, Virginia to live.
Also, while working at the Department of State, she met James P. Lewis of Spotsylvania, Virginia, and on June 26, 1976, they would become husband and wife.
Ruth joined Eastern Star Chapter #216 in 1988 and served as member where she received a 25 year certificate in 2013 and she continued to be an active member until her health began to decline. Ruth loved spending time with her family, as well as her church family. She especially loved her pastor Reverend Leonard Bland and First Lady, Carolyn Bland. The laughter she shared among her siblings was felt throughout the family. She had a great passion for cooking, and would often come up with new and different recipes. Family members became her favorite taste testers. She always
had a smile and carried a kind word for everyone. She was a very caring and loving person who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Margaret Toliver, Thomas Ashton, Dorothy Penn, Robert Ashton, Sr. and Earl Ashton, Sr. and a step-daughter, Pamela Lewis.
Ruth leaves to cherish her memory, her husband James P. Lewis; two children, Kelvin L. Tisdale; Stacie D. Ashton Anderson; two step-daughters Sandra Saunders (James), Rhonda Jernigan (Marcellus); two brothers Ralph Ashton (Helen), Vernell Ashton; two sisters Mildred Ashton Holmes and Athelia Garland; four grandchildren Danielle Ashton-Johnson, Bryan Frye, Jr., Donnell Ashton and Mikayla Ashton; four great-grandchildren, Dillion Johnson, Deylah Johnson, Riley Frye, Bellamy Frye; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

In 1995, Alan married Vanessa Chandler. It was a joyous, cherished union that blessed them with two sons, Austin and Jared, whom he treasured. While Alan was a loving and devoted husband and father, he also gave generously of his time and talents to offer support and encouragement to his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews, cousins, and many others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and words of inspiration. His advice was sound, and his intentions were pure. His kind and compassionate spirit endeared him to many.
