Barbara Ann McQuaid - May 31, 1937 - February 13, 2022

Departed: 02/13/2022 (Ware)
Obituary Preview: Barbara Ann (Letourneau) McQuaid, a lifelong resident of Ware, died peacefully on Sunday, February 13, 2022 with her family by her side. Barbara was born on May 31, 1937 at Mary Lane Hospital to the late Sylvio and Celia (Rymarski) Letourneau of Ware. After graduating from Ware High School in 1955, she earned a BS in Chemistry from Elms College in 1959, and a MS in Natural Science from WPI in 1981. She married her high school sweetheart, William McQuaid, in 1960 and their son was born four years later. She shared her love of chemistry and physics with hundreds of students, first at Chicopee Comprehensive High School and then for many years at Palmer High School.
A gifted pianist, Barbara accompanied area musicals, fashion shows, and senior-center sing-alongs over the years and even had a short stint with Happy Louie. She passed on her love of music to her son, Bill, and her oldest grandson, Sammy. She shared her love of horror movies with her youngest grandson, “Spooky” Luke McQuaid and was a voracious reader. Her backyard birdfeeders were never empty, and as an avid stargazer, she was always eager to witness a meteor shower or an eclipse. Barbara loved nothing more than spending time with friends and family, whether by her pool in the summertime or at holiday gatherings, to which she brought her (in)famous Polish borscht. A good listener with never an unkind word for anyone, Barbara was a joy to be with and never took herself too seriously.   Toward the end of her life, Barbara struggled with too many health issues to list, but maintained a great sense of humor and always put family first. She was blessed with a team of caring aides, especially, Val, Mary, Faith, and Marissa, who helped make her final months more comfortable. At the end, when she was through fighting, she even offered to write her own obituary. During a short collaboration with her son, she said, “Billy, you’re going to put these people to sleep!” So, we will wrap this up quickly now! Barbara leaves her son, Bill McQuaid, and his wife, Mari (Williams) of Melrose; loving sister, Suzanne (Letourneau) Higney and her husband, Kenny; and grandsons, Sammy and Luke McQuaid. She also leaves sister-in-law, Anna McQuaid of Ware; brother-in-law, Paul McQuaid of North Brookfield; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Philip Letourneau; her aunt, Josephine Rymarski; and her husband, Bill McQuaid, whom she decided to go see in time for Valentine’s Day.
Calling Hours will be held on Sunday, February 20, 2022 from 4 - 6 PM in the Cebula Funeral Home Chapel, 66 South Street, Ware. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 11 AM in All Saints Church, 17 North Street, Ware. After his retirement and move to the Cape, he was an active volunteer on the Town of Yarmouth Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Thomas identified first as an Engineer and, after his family, the Quabbin Reservoir was his great love. His life’s work was his proposed expansion of the Quabbin Reservoir as a regional solution to New England’s perennial water shortages. In addition to his work at the MWRA, he wrote three books on the subject: "Southern New England's Future Thirst, A Central Lakes Solution", "Southern New England's Future Thirst, Strategic Plan-Paradigm Shift", "Southern New England's Future Thirst: The Second Drop”, and lectured in universities and civic organizations about the need to plan ahead and update the “100 Year Solution” for potable water across New England that the Quabbin offered Metro-Boston at the turn of the last century. In 2008, in an article entitled “All Tomorrow’s Water” the Boston Globe profiled his work on the Quabbin that beautifully captures not only the scope of the problem that he sought to address, but his joy in contemplating a problem that few others understood and evangelizing for his proposed solution. Even in his final days, he tried to convince hospital staff and caregivers, taking any conversational opportunity he could, to get them to think about the future of the water supply across New England.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday January 24, 2022, at Saint  Pius X Church on Station Ave, S. Yarmouth, MA 02664. Burial will follow in the spring at the Quabbin Reservoir Park Cemetery. If circumstances do not allow you to celebrate his life with us, please raise a toast wherever you are and pledge not to leave the water running on the faucet. In lieu of floral offerings, please plant a tree. EMBED LINK: Link to “All Tomorrow’s Water”: https://archive.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/06/15/all_tomorrows_water/

Michael B. "Butch" Guzik - January 02, 1938 - December 17, 2021

Departed: 12/17/2021 (Ware)
Obituary Preview: Michael B. Guzik, best known as Butch and most importantly Big Dziadziu, passed away on December 17, 2021 after enduring respiratory complications due to Covid. Butch was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, six months, and six days, Judith C. Guzik, his daughter Lynn Marie and his son Brian M. Guzik. Butch leaves behind his son Chris and his wife Dawn Guzik, and his sons David Guzik and Michael Guzik of Ware. Also, his grandchildren Dakota Guzik, Dylan Guzik, Christopher Guzik and his fiance Ashley Robbins, and Niki Giguere and her husband Alex, as well as four great granddaughters Josie, Loretta, Loralei and Adaline (who will surely miss visits with Big Dziadziu and his freezer full of popsicles.) He also leaves his sister Pam Aucoin and her husband Phil, his sister Terry Dubois and her husband Tony, and his brother Richard Guzik and his wife Flora, as well as many nieces and nephews. Born in Ware on January 2, 1938, Butch stuck around and made himself a name in town. He served in the Navy, had a real estate business and took pride in the family Jeep dealership. Butch was a lifetime member at the Weir River club and loved to socialize and play cards. Butch enjoyed family time: teaching his kids and grandkids to fish and hunt, shoot pool, plant a garden, cook, but most importantly how to put on their dancing shoes. We will all remember him doing his favorite things with that contagious smile. Butch was always up for helping others- a tough guy with a kind heart who lived life fearlessly and to the fullest. To say he will be deeply missed is an understatement, but comfort can be found in our memories and in his reunion with his loved ones on the other side. Funeral services for Butch will be private with a memorial mass and a celebration of his life to be held at a later date. Donations can be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.  The Koziol Family of Cebula Funeral Home is assisting Butch's family with the final arrangements.  For more information and online guest book, please visit:  www.cebulafuneralhome.com .

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share information about the deceased with friends, family, and the community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for loved ones, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also give friends and acquaintances an opportunity to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to learn about their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to ensure their story is told accurately and honestly. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including lighthearted stories or humorous anecdotes can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or complicated relationships involved, it's essential to approach the situation with tact and compassion. Consider seeking guidance from a trusted friend, family member, or professional counselor.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about memorial contributions or charitable donations in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow corrections or updates.

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you notice an error in the obituary. They may be able to correct it before publication or issue a correction notice.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Sometimes families want to republish an obituary on significant dates such as birthdays or anniversaries. Check with the publication for their policies on republication.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives, visit local libraries or genealogical societies, or contact newspapers directly to access archived obituaries.

Are online obituaries permanent?

In most cases, online obituaries remain available indefinitely. However, it's essential to check with the specific platform for their archiving policies.

Can I create a memorial website or social media page instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to create online memorials as a way to share memories and pay tribute to their loved one. These can be especially helpful for those who live far away or prefer online communication.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers?

If you're receiving condolences from people you don't know, you can respond with a simple thank-you message or ignore them altogether. Be cautious when sharing personal information online.

What if I'm struggling with grief after writing an obituary?

Losing a loved one can be incredibly difficult. Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or professional counselors for support during this challenging time.

Can I use an obituary as a way to celebrate someone's life?

Absolutely! An obituary can be a powerful tool for celebrating someone's accomplishments, passions, and spirit. Focus on sharing stories that highlight their personality and impact on others.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?
