The Reverend Duane Gilbert Grage - June 24, 1938 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Park Rapids)
Obituary Preview: Duane Gilbert Grage was born to Gilbert Grage and Alice (Gewecke) Grage on June 24th, 1938 in Pipestone, Minnesota. His formative years were spent in and around Jasper, Minnesota where he graduated from High School in 1956. He then spent a year at South Dakota State University before moving to St. Paul to join his brother Loren at Hamline University. On June 5th, 1959 he married his High School sweetheart, Judith Jessen, in Hardwick, Minnesota. After he graduated from Hamline in 1961, he taught Mathematics at Wayzata High School for a year before moving to New Jersey so he could attend Seminary at Drew University. He received his Master of Divinity degree in 1965 and later that same year he was ordained a Minister in the Minnesota Conference of the United Methodist Church. Duane completed his formal education in 1970 after receiving a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. That was not the end of his educational journey – those who knew him will attest that he continued to learn and teach throughout the rest of his life. In 1989 he married Sue Ottarson, and their relationship was a loving, supportive partnership as she contributed her many gifts to his ministries.
During his ministry, he served churches in Minneapolis (Lake Harriet UMC), Litchfield, Rochester (Bethany UMC), Park Rapids (Riverside UMC), Mounds View (Sunrise UMC), Monticello (Community UMC), Moorhead (Grace UMC), Raymond, and Glenwood. He also served in the Department of Religion at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; as the director of congregational development for the Minnesota Conference; and as the director of Northern Pines Assembly Grounds. He formally retired in 2001 after 27 years of full-time ministry.
After retirement, his pastoral calling did not end as he served in interim positions at churches in Baxter, Walker and Hackensack. While living in Hutchinson from 2002-2015 he worked as a substitute teacher for the Hutchinson Public Schools and as adjunct faculty at the Hutchinson campus of Ridgewater College. In 2016 he returned to Park Rapids where he remained active in leading discussion groups and substitute preaching until his health forced him to take a less active role outside of his home.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy, his brother Neale, his first wife Judy and his niece Elizabeth Grage. He is survived by his wife Sue Grage, son Michael Grage (Andrea), daughter Duana Grage, grandchildren Neale Grage and Gwyneth Grage. He is also survived by his brother Loren Grage (Connie), niece Jennifer Schmaedeke (Mark), nephew Adam Grage (Melanie), and Sue’s children Jon Ottarson and Kristin Ottarson.
Duane was sought out as a transformational leader, shepherding congregations through times of struggle and overseeing major building projects to completion. Most importantly, throughout his life he had a significant passion for social justice, full equality for all humans and environmental stewardship for all God’s creatures especially their cats Simone and Marshmallow. He and Sue enjoyed traveling, both for pleasure and in service as they spent several months in Mobile Alabama helping the cleanup in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. He was known to be a kind friend to many and a good, wise, caring, and compassionate person. Throughout his life he never stopped learning, and he continued to pass along what he learned to others.
He was the most dedicated father, oftentimes driving for hours to watch his children’s high school sports games, sending articles and books of interest, and always making sure they felt loved and supported in all their endeavors. His grandchildren were a constant source of joy in his life; he marveled at every aspect of his dear Neale and Gwyneth’s journeys towards adulthood. They always looked forward to visits to see their Poppa. Above all, Duane was a man of deep integrity and compassion. We should all endeavor to live a life he sought: to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. (Micah 6:8)
The family asks those wishing to honor Duane financially to donate to The Alzheimer’s Association.

Randy was always willing to teach his craft to anyone who wanted to learn. Especially his nephew (son) Daimen Such. The two of them were side by side throughout the years. Anyone that knew his love of hunting and Minnesota Vikings, win, lose, or draw! In honor of this love, if you are attending this service we would love for you to wear camo or Minnesota Vikings attire.
On September 12, 1992, Randy married the love of his love, Ellen Shepersky. They have been together for 42 blessed years. Ellen had two daughters from a previous marriage, that soon became his.
