Eric Ekstam Lund - November 28, 1959 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Bemidji)
Obituary Preview: Eric Ekstam Lund, of Bemidji, MN, passed away April 19, 2024, surrounded by his family. Eric loved life and waged a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was thankful for the loving support he received from his family, extended family, and friends throughout those two years. He was loved and will be deeply missed. Eric was born November 28, 1959, to Gene and Louise (Ekstam) Lund in Moorhead, MN. He was the fourth of five boys, and he loved telling stories of growing up with his four brothers and spending time with his many cousins, aunts, and uncles. Eric graduated from Moorhead High School in 1978. He graduated in 1982 from Concordia College in Moorhead with majors in Mathematics and Philosophy. He attended graduate school at the University of Iowa, where he initially studied Physics and went on to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1990. In 1990, Eric joined the faculty of Bemidji State University, where he had a long and rewarding career as a professor of Mathematics. Eric cared deeply for his many students and colleagues; retiring early because of cancer was a great sorrow for him.
Eric married Danae Beattie in 1994. Eric and Danae were blessed with 30 years of marriage and three beautiful children- Ethan, Anna, and Britta. Eric treasured family time spent together at home and during their many travels and camping trips. Eric’s greatest joy in life was his family and he especially loved being a father. He was always available for his children with a compassionate ear, energy for a bike ride or a game of catch, help with their homework (especially math) or with music, and a ready willingness to climb on things that probably shouldn’t be climbed on.
Eric was a kind and intelligent man, and a man of many interests and talents which he pursued with passion. A gift he offered his children was his willingness to develop a keen interest in whatever they were interested in. Eric was a musician and played piano and viola. He especially loved playing the piano music of Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin, and this beautiful sound was regularly heard throughout the house. A great joy in his life was playing in the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra. Eric also loved Mathematics and regularly left pieces of paper all around the house which were covered with mathematical musings not decipherable to the rest of us. He was quick to identify numbers by their factors and enthusiastically pointed out prime numbers he came across; he was deeply moved by the beauty of Mathematics in the world. Eric loved literature and languages. He was well-read, and loved discussing books and authors. He loved the natural world, philosophy, history, and art. He studied art as a hobby and enjoyed painting landscapes.
Eric valued being physically active and was keenly interested in athletics. He pole-vaulted on the Concordia College track team and participated in this sport life-long, as did his brothers. Eric was especially thankful for how he was embraced by the Bemidji State pole vaulters and was welcomed to participate in vaulting during their track practices. In late 2022 Eric had a few weeks’ break from chemotherapy, and he took advantage of his increased energy by pole-vaulting in an alumni track meet at Bemidji State University. Eric was also an avid distance bicycler; his bike trips included a solo cycling and camping trip from Pacific to Atlantic. Eric also loved canoeing, wilderness camping, hiking, ice skating, cross-country skiing, playing catch with his brothers or his children, and watching sports, especially baseball.
Eric was preceded in death by his parents and by several uncles, aunts, and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Danae; children, Ethan, Anna, and Britta; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Diana, Rolf and Lisa, Victor, Nathan; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dean and Donna Beattie; brother-in-law, Daniel Beattie; nieces and nephews and their spouses, Matthew and Kim, Alycia and Brandon, Dan, Anders, Blake and Karissa, Destani, Karson, Demetri and Ryan, Jason, Jonah, Cecelia, Jaelyn, Ava, and Sammy; aunts, Mary and Diane; many cousins; and close friends Roger Avelsgaard and Barbara Maas.
Eric’s family wishes to express gratitude to family and friends who offered kindness and support in so many ways and for so long. We also express our thankfulness for Eric’s medical care team, especially Dr. Dan DeKrey, each of the nurses and providers at the Joe Lueken Cancer Center, and for the hospice team that offered such compassionate caring in the last week of Eric’s life.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, April 27, 2024 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Bemidji. The family prefers memorials to be directed to Hospice, Bemidji State University student scholarships, or Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.

Tomy Dennis Hegland - March 13, 1946 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Bemidji)
Obituary Preview: Tomy Dennis Hegland, 78, of Bemidji, MN died Sunday, April 14, 2024 at his home.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 26, 2024 at Aardahl Lutheran Church in Bemidji. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 pm on Thursday April 25 at the Cease Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at a later date at the Aardahl Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Tomy Dennis Hegland died peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, April 14. He was born on March 13, 1946 in Bemidji, Minnesota to Tom and Mary (Zaretsky) Hegland. He grew up on Grace Lake while attending Sunnyside School through the eighth grade and graduating from Bemidji High School in 1964.
He met his wife, Carolyn, in the fall of 1964 and they married on September 2, 1967.
Tomy was employed at Gill Brothers Clothing, General Products and Don's Tires before starting his career with Realty Sales. Soon he purchased Realty Sales, along with Mr. Don's (a.k.a. The Hair House), located on Main Street in Cass Lake and relocated his office there. Later, he opened another office in Bemidji selling primarily resorts and commercial properties. Towards the end of his career, he purchased Grimes Realty which focused on residential home sales. He valued and cared for all his employees throughout his career and truly felt they were an extension of his family.
His love for music and the outdoors started at a very young age. He was a member of several bands, but he is most remembered as the lead singer for the Shades of Soul. Over the years he sang at numerous weddings and funerals of friends and family and enjoyed reuniting with band members and their families every few years. When he wasn't singing, you would probably find him out in the woods hunting, in Canada fishing, or in the old Lund or pontoon fishing on Grace. Tomy was a member of Aardahl Lutheran Church his whole life. Two of his most memorable experiences were visiting Aardahl's sister church in Madagascar. He never forgot the wonderful people, the beauty of the island and the inspiration he received worshiping with them. Of course, fishing was a bonus!
He was active in his communities as a member of both the Cass Lake and Bemidji Chamber of Commerce. He was also one of the founding members of the Bemidji Eagles Club and was their first president.
In recent years, Tomy and Carolyn purchased a home in North Port, Florida and spent their winters there.
In between card games and cribbage, they would host visitors from Minnesota and elsewhere, and became close friends with several neighbors in their new community.
Tomy and Carolyn lived on Grace Lake most of their lives. They not only raised their two daughters, Nikki and Jennifer, but opened their home and hearts to family members and special friends in times of need or to simply enjoy time together. Tomy will be remembered as someone who cared deeply for the people he surrounded himself with and would lend a helping hand whenever needed. His handshake was better than a contract and he led his life with honesty and loyalty. He could always bring a smile and never met a stranger.
Tomy is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Hoppes) Hegland; daughter Nikki (David) Nordmeier of Elk River, Minnesota, daughter Jennifer Cole of Mounds View, Minnesota, and son-in-law Jeremy Cole of Fridley, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Anna and Chet Nordmeier, and Trenton and Kaiser Cole; his sister Marlene Moore of Bemidji; a special cousin Gwen Young and numerous nephews and nieces.

Dorothy Irene Naramore - March 15, 1922 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Bemidji)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Naramore passed away on April 7, 2024 at the age of 102. “Dotty” was born on the Ides of March (March 15), 1922 in Lakota, North Dakota to Elizabeth and Edward Sorensen. She was the third of four children, and graduated from Lakota High School in 1940. She then moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota and attended Aakers Business College. During World War II she worked for Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, California, returning to Grand Forks where she then worked for ten years in the Superintendent’s Office of the Great Northern Railroad Company.
More importantly, while in Grand Forks she was introduced to her future husband, George Naramore. George, having recently purchased property with the dream of having a resort, realized that this gal, who was a hard worker, would help him realize that dream. After a short engagement, the couple married in Grand Forks in 1953. Not wasting time, their first child, Scott, was born in 1954 followed by Nancy in 1956. The family moved to Bemidji in 1958, where George taught math at the Junior High School. His degree in Industrial Arts was useful for building cabins for the development of the Red Squirrel Resort. Third child Beth was born in 1959 to complete the Naramore family. Perfect together, George and Dotty enjoyed bowling, curling and dancing. Dotty also played a mean game of bridge (which, in turn, made her the queen of Skip-Bo in her later years).
In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, Dotty served as a bailiff in Beltrami District Court for over 12 years, was the first woman to be a director on the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce board, and a director on the Bemidji Hospital Community board. She worked for the Grand Rapids Herald Review in association with the Bemidji Area Vacation Guide for six years. She was active in the United Methodist Church, awarded “Special Mission Recognition” and belonged to PEO Chapter EX. Dotty clearly loved Bemidji.
For 54 years, George and Dotty’s Red Squirrel Resort became not just a vacation destination, but a relationship destination for the many people that became part of their and their children’s lives; relationships that continue to this day. It was so much a part of Dotty’s life that at 88 years young, she actually memorialized that love by tattooing a red squirrel on her leg.
Dotty was a numbers person; her favorite time on the clock was 11:11. Whenever she noticed that time on the clock, she and George would say, “I love you” and give each other a kiss. So, to remember Dotty, whenever you notice 11:11 on the clock, join her children and grandchildren and let someone know how much you love them.
The family will have a memorial celebration in the summer.

Lovetta Faye Hammer - July 09, 1933 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Bemidji)
Obituary Preview: Lovetta Faye Hammer (90), of Bemidji, Minnesota, died Saturday, March 16th surrounded by her family.
Lovetta Faye was born July 9, 1933, their only child, to Albert and Elda Gehrke of Adams, ND. She grew up on the farm milking cows by hand and tending crops; this is where her grit and work ethic were cemented. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and, in 1952, was one of four graduates from Adams High School.
After graduation, Lovetta headed south to continue her education at Concordia College. A fall handshake mixer– the story goes- is where Faye met her future husband, Donald Hammer. Much like speed dating, Don- a smart man- kept circling around for another handshake. This was the beginning of their great 64-year love story. Don and Faye married July 25, 1954.
The couple moved to New Mexico where Don was in the Army and Faye taught school. After a stint in Fosston, Don and Faye moved to Bemidji, MN. They would make this their forever home.
Mrs. Hammer is remembered by many as their librarian at Lincoln Elementary School. Her love of books and memorable reading voice enticed many of her students to become lifelong readers. Later, she would become the high school librarian at Park Rapids High School.
Her great loves were dancing with Don to “The Shades of Soul” at Jack’s Supper Club, feeling the tug of a walleye on her line while fishing on Lake of the Woods, or getting a hole in one while golfing. Faye was a master gardener and consummate entertainer. What a fabulous marriage of talents. Lucky was the couple that received a “Fayemous Foods” recipe book for their wedding gift!
Faye believed in hard work, dressing for success, and serving others. She had an aptitude for public speaking and loved her role as liturgist at First Lutheran Church. She was a true lady. She believed a woman could do anything a man could do- and did. She was the trailer backer upper, the wood stacker, the boat navigator, and fish cleaner. She believed a dog on a lap made everything better.
She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and unending honor that was shown in her care for Don.
Faye and Don lived the best of lives: great friends, great adventures, and a great love. It’s a beautiful thought that they are dancing together again.
Faye is survived by her three daughters: Colette (Robert) Erickson, Hayden Lake ID; Larae (Roger-deceased) Peterson, Reardan, WA; and Darcee (Curtis) Kissler Haynes, Fruita, CO; seven grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.
Lovetta Faye was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Don (2016).
Services will be held at First Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 11th at 1:30pm.
