Obituary Preview: Donald E. Heneberry, 93, of Media, Pa., formerly of Kennett Square, Pa., and New Carrollton and Ellicott City, Md., passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
Born Feb. 7, 1931, in Decatur, Ill., Don was a son of the late Will and Mary Alice (Bresnan) Heneberry. Don was raised on the family farm in Moultrie County, Ill.
He graduated from Bethany High School in Bethany, Ill. in 1949 and from the University of Illinois (U of I) in Champaign, Ill. in 1953, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, double majoring in French and library sciences.
With a deep love of music ingrained in them by their mother, Don and his twin brother, Dave, frequently sang two-part harmony at their church and high school. They continued performing at dances and other campus events while attending U of I, during which time they tied for first prize on the Horace Heidt radio show in 1950.
Don taught himself to play the banjo, and in the early 1980s, he joined the Federal Jazz Commission (FJC), a New Orleans-style jazz band formed in 1976 that became one of the longest-running musical acts in Washington, D.C., performing weekly at Colonel Brooks’s Tavern in the District’s Brookland neighborhood. Don played banjo and sang with the FJC for 25 years, including performing at the White House, the Smithsonian Institution and various locations in the United States and Ireland.
Over the years, Don and Dave sang together at every opportunity. Their last performance was on their 93rd birthday in February 2024.
While Don and his future wife, Joan Kirts, attended U of I at the same time, they didn’t formally meet until after graduation in Washington, D.C. where they had both moved in the mid-1950s. During a chance meeting at St. Patrick’s Church on 10th Street, they discovered they had grown up less than 90 miles apart in rural Illinois. From that day forward there were few days they spent apart. They were married at St. Mary of the Assumption in Sainte Marie, Ill. on April 12, 1958, and spent most of their lives living and working in the Washington, D.C. area.
Don enrolled in the Air Force ROTC program as a college student. Following graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Airforce and Reserves. Mary Berkman Sheppard Piectrazak - April 23, 1930 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Media)
Obituary Preview: Mary Berckman Sheppard Piectrazak (Toots) left us on March 10, 2024 from her own bed in her own room in her own home and she was not alone even in her last moments. Family was able to come to her to say goodbye, express their love of her and reassure her all of us are well. The angels who cared for her over the past four years came by to hold her hand, say goodbye and pass their love and care onto us. Mom loved all of those who helped her everyday saying, “I am well cared for. Don’t worry about me.”
Born on April 23, 1930, mom grew up in Nether Providence, PA with her mother, Maude, father Ted, and her two brothers, Frank and Teddy. She was described to us as a “pistol” in her childhood and cheerleading teen years earning her the handle “Toots or Tootsie.” She wore that nickname well.
How to describe mom? Toots loved a joke, specifically a dirty one. Toots was a dancer and a singer and a flirt. She enjoyed playing cards (poker) and cribbage as well board games cheating every chance she got. Her drink preference transformed from rum and coke to a spicy Bloody Mary and she became an avid reader with a solid liking of historical novels focused on strong, influential women of her generation – and movie stars. She loved black jelly beans, coconut Easter eggs, blue cheese dressing (the more the better) but not all together. Actually, she loved anything sweet. Her past-times included knitting, painting and pocket billiards.
Mom was brave. She saved her three young daughters by taking them away from their father and her abusive husband when being a divorced woman in the 60’s was a badge of shame. She, and therefore we, refused to wear that label.
She loved an adventure. Mom traveled to foreign lands and met people easily. Mom respected those “formally educated” but was never impressed by titles - with the exception of the British Royal Family.
Mom did not complain – sometimes to her detriment. She did not judge others and kept her nose out of others business. You knew when she liked you. And when she didn’t. Advice was offered if and when requested and was most often on target. Of course, she drove us crazy at times as all mothers do their children.
Mom married Marion Piectrazak in 1972. Mergy took we three girls as his own and gave into mom at every turn. We loved him too.
In her 50’s Toots transferred from the Sun Oil Marine Department where she was employed as a secretary to a position in the galley of the Sun Oil tankers. Shipping out from various ports around the globe, with a home port located in Marcus Hook, PA, she loved the sea and her shipmates. Mom worked in the steward department, made life-long friends and came home with sea stories of her adventures, ship mates and close calls. Her grandchildren thought she was a pirate! In retirement she did volunteer work as a cook on the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel of Wilmington, Delaware.
Toots is survived by her older brother, Frank Berckman of Massachusetts. Her younger brother, Teddy Berckman of California, predeceased her.  She has three daughters, Sharon Lee Rogers and husband Larry Horgan of Ithaca, N.Y, Pauline D. Michel and partner David Michel of Kennett Square, PA and Jennifer Mary Kontaxis of NYC. Toots has three grandchildren from Pauline and David. Hannah Eve Michel of NYC, NY, Sam A.D. Michel and his wife Ashlee of West Chester, PA and Maude Bess Michel and her fiancé Sam Schube of Los Angeles, CA. Sam and Ashlee gave Toots a great-grandson, Max A., in April 2023, who was a tremendous joy to mom during his first year of life and her last.
Over the last several years every phone conversation we had with mom began with us asking that she turn the TV down. Hearing aids were loudly suggested to her and her response was, “I don’t need hearing aids.” Then, she would report to us what movie she was watching – usually “the best movie ever made” such as Ben Hur, My Fair Lady, a World War II movie or Kingsman. “How are all the kids?! How’s my great-grandson?” was her opening line to me on each call or visit followed by showing her photos on my phone of her grandchildren and Max. We continue to love her and miss her funny and sometimes silly ways that we see reflected in each of us. Mom requested her ashes be scattered in the Delaware breakwater as this is symbolic to east coast seamen of coming home. She did not want an urn for her ashes – just a cardboard box so as not to “waste the money.”
Please plant a lilac, her favorite shrub, and salute her with a spicy, like her, Bloody Mary. Smooth sailing mom.

Laura's interests were as vibrant and diverse as her personality. She liked to garden and soak in the sun, preferably on a beach. Her passion for cooking was evident in her quest for new recipes and the joy she found in watching cooking shows.
Traveling was another of Laura's pursuits, with each new destination creating unforgettable memories. Closer to home, she was a dedicated fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, her spirit soaring with every touchdown. She passed on Super Bowl Sunday but she was rooting for Andy Reid's team and they won.  Laura's playful side shone bright in her love for the thrill of gambling, from the simple pleasure of her lottery rubs to the excitement of playing her numbers and the slots at the casinos.
Laura was a huge Trump supporter. She often found herself in Facebook jail and in debates with her family and friends. Boy, did she like to debate; she would agree with that!  Those who knew Laura would describe her as the epitome of friendliness, her generous nature touching countless lives. She was a warrior with a vibrant personality and a great sense of humor. She loved her family, dog and friends fiercely and spoiled us all as much as possible. Her caring and loving heart will be missed by all that knew her.
Laura was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Budroe, and father, Francis DiFabio.
She is survived by her loving husband, Louis Gioia, her daughters, Christine Bedard and Kathleen (Robert) Leneweaver and stepdaughter Christa (John) Grimditch. Laura will be forever remembered and forever loved!
No services will take place, as Laura requested, but we do appreciate your love and support during this difficult time.

George Thomas Denney, III - October 04, 1942 - January 08, 2024

Departed: 01/08/2024 (Media)
Obituary Preview: George Thomas Denney III passed peacefully into the Church Triumphant on the evening of Monday, January 8, 2024. Born in Southwest Philadelphia on October 4, 1942 to Catherine and George Denney, George spent his early days playing baseball, building his erector set and model train sets, and riding his bike with his childhood friends wherever he could go. He reached the level of Star Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, and loved his camp visits to Treasure Island with his Scout troop
At 19, he met the love of his life, 17-year-old Rosanna, when he visited the soda shop where she worked and she made him “the best chocolate milkshake he ever had in his life”. Their days of young courtship meant proms, trolley rides, and dates to parties at Kappa Sigma, his college fraternity.
A graduate of John Bartram High School, George was a student at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in accounting. He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy on his graduation day in May 1964, and served on the USS Barton and the USS Corry before becoming an accountant for Rohm and Haas Company in Philadelphia.
George and Rosanna were married in August of 1966, and were blessed with four wonderful daughters, Michelle, Natalie, Elaina, and Sharon. Among hundreds of treasured childhood memories are vacations in Avalon; sledding at “The Big Hill”; visits to Disney World; backyard croquet tournaments while catching lightning bugs; board game nights; and boat rides on the Susquehanna River. George and Rosanna found a way to make even the simplest things truly magical for their girls.
George had the great fortune of working with many wonderful and lifelong friends at both the Bridesburg plant and the home office of Rohm and Haas on Market Street in Philadelphia. He had so many happy memories of his “work family”, and his children joyfully remember company picnics, visits to the Bridesburg plant, and visiting the office in the city at Christmas time. He always had a nice story to share of the many wonderful people he worked with there, and even after retiring in 2004, nearly one hundred of his colleagues would continue to get together for an annual holiday lunch to celebrate their time as part of the Rohm and Haas family.
In retirement, George greatly enjoyed his annual golf trips with his best friends from childhood; visiting many Civil War battlefields, including his treasured trips to Gettysburg; spending time with dear friends, Bud and Wanda Amos, at the family cabin on the Susquehanna River; creating a complete N-gauge model train layout in his home; his football league gatherings with his team, the HaasBeens; taking Rosanna on many trips to quilt shops, near and far; and tirelessly caring for his koi pond and the birds who loved visiting his yard.
Nothing made him quite so happy as time with his family, however, and most of his days were occupied with time spent with Rosanna and his daughters; many family gatherings; and enjoying every ballet recital, field hockey game, soccer game, basketball game, theatrical production, and musical performance that his four grandchildren were in. As was the case watching his daughters grow up, he was a part of every moment and never passed up the chance to see his beloved family and to tell them how proud he was of them. Humble, fair, and generous, he truly enjoyed his life in every way, knowing that each and every moment was a precious gift. He told his family how much he loved them as often as he could. While we all wish we had more of those moments with him, we know how much we were loved, and he knew how much we loved him.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Rosanna; his adoring daughters, Michelle, Natalie, Elaina, and Sharon; his wonderful sons-in-law, Frank and Brian; and his beloved grandchildren, Abigail, Carter, Daniel, and Evangeline.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Wallingford Presbyterian Church (110 E. Brookhaven Road, Wallingford, PA).

John T. Kennedy, Jr. - December 24, 1933 - January 06, 2024

Departed: 01/06/2024 (Media)
Obituary Preview: John T. Kennedy, Jr., 90, of Gwynedd, PA (formerly of Glen Mills), passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Foulkeways at Gwynedd following a three month battle with metastatic cancer. Born on December 24, 1933 in Greenwich, CT, he was the son of the late John, Sr. & Teresa (Loughlin) Kennedy and was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Mary Woods Kennedy.
A proud graduate of Fairfield Prep, Connecticut, John went on to the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1955. Following graduation, while working in New York, John met Mary on a blind date. Mary, a nurse in Philadelphia, quickly became the love of his life. Their engagement led to John's decision, with Mary's encouragement, to join the Navy's Officer Candidate School (OCS). Enlisting in July 1957, John and Mary married the same month and spent their early years of marriage in Newport Beach, CA. John honorably served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) in the U.S. Navy until July 1960 and continued his service in the Navy Reserves until February 1968.
After his military service, John earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business in 1962. This academic achievement paved the way for a distinguished and fulfilling career spanning over four decades, first as a sales leader with IBM and subsequently with Memorex.
John and his family were deeply committed to the community. He and Mary were passionate supporters of the local Democratic Party. John was a trailblazer in local politics, becoming the first Democrat elected as Supervisor for Concord Township Delaware county PA in the mid-1970s. His grassroots campaign, marked by personal door to door community engagement, showed that passionate community focus trumps political ties.
His dedication to community was further demonstrated through his long-standing involvement with the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree knight, our Catholic parish and the Notre Dame Club of Philadelphia. Our parish, St Thomas the Apostle, was a core part of John’s life. With Mass each Sunday, children attending the parish grade school, chairing fundraisers like the annual art auctions and the St. Thomas country fair, many lifelong friendships were formed here.
John and Mary shared a beautiful life, full of shared interests, partnership, and love. They both had a passion for tennis, often found playing at Concord Country Club with friends. Their gardens were a source of pride and joy, with John's expertise as a master gardener complementing Mary's own green thumb. Together, they nurtured large vegetable and flower gardens that were not only a testament to their teamwork but also a haven of beauty and tranquility. That teamwork came to “play” with their monthly dinner bridge parties, a joyful highlight of their social calendar.
Family was at the core of everything for John, and the annual family shore trip was a highlight. John and Mary's beach trips were a harmonious blend of relaxation and activity, creating countless cherished family memories. As Mary found her bliss soaking in the sun's warmth on the beach, John and the boys reveled in the joys of the sea. Their days at the shore were a perfect mix of tranquil sunbathing and spirited ocean adventures. Following a day basking in the sun and riding the waves, the family's enthusiasm shifted towards the bay. Here, John and his sons would engage in flounder fishing and crabbing. These moments on the bay were as much about bonding over shared experiences as they were about the thrill of the catch. Whether they were gently bobbing on the water in a boat waiting for a flounder to bite or excitedly pulling in crabs from the dock, these experiences were treasured components of their beach outings. As evening approached, the family's day at the beach would often conclude with a visit to Springer's for John’s favorite treat - ice cream!
Upon retirement in the late 90s, John and Mary relocated to Georgetown, Delaware to indulge in their love of the scenic beaches and golfing at Sussex Pines Golf Club. These years were filled with relaxation, enjoyment of nature, and the continued pursuit of their hobbies in a serene coastal setting.
Following Mary's passing in 2008, John moved to Foulkeways at Gwynedd, a wonderful retirement community where new friendships were formed. Ellen Beschen was a special companion whose friendship brought joy to the last years of John’s life.
John cherished his role as Granddad to his seven grandchildren and supported them in all their activities and endeavors. He loved cheering from the sidelines of sporting activities and burst with pride at high school and college graduations, news of first jobs and all updates from the kids.
In 2016, John was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and joined a pioneering Phase 2 clinical trial that significantly improved his life while also advancing the understanding and treatment of the disease. His involvement contributed to important discoveries in Alzheimer's research. John was very proud to have been the first patient showing the effectiveness of the therapy - thwarting the symptoms - allowing ‘something else to get you’ ( ended up being an unrelated cancer case).
John is survived by his children, John T, III (Julie) and Michael B. (Christine) Kennedy; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, William, Ryan, Michael, Andrew, Matthew, and Thomas; sister, Mary Keenan; brother-in-law, Hugh; and sister-in-law Margaret Humpf.
The family is grateful to the caregivers at Foulkeways who provided him with dignity and support and suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association research in honor of John:  A hyperlink can be found at the bottom of this page.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life at his Visitation on Saturday, January 27th, from 9:30 to 10:30 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 430 Valleybrook Rd., Glen Mills, PA 19342. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 am, with interment in St. Thomas Cemetery.
John's life, a testament to love, dedication, and service, will forever be cherished in the memories of those who knew and loved him. His integrity, generosity, and devotion to his family, career, and community have left an indelible mark.
