Beth E. Cary - April 20, 1935 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Cashton)
Obituary Preview: Beth E. Cary, 88 of Westby, WI, passed away peacefully Monday, February 19, 2024 at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. Beth was born April 20, 1935 to Earl and Elva (Smith) Thomas outside of Ontario, WI. She married Jerald Cary on September 19, 1953.
Beth and Jerald raised five children on the farm where they instilled the values of hard work, being kind and helpful to family, friends and neighbors. There were lean years and better years, but always good years and good times. They raised the usual farm crops of hay, corn and oats. They even did pickle and strawberry patches. When raising tobacco Beth fed the crew every day, to some that may sound like a lot of work, but Beth loved to bake and cook. She always grew a large garden and canned much produce from it. She would find innovative ways to preserve food for the winter, including using a wringer washing machine to churn their own butter. This was during an NFO milk strike in the 1960’s. The butter rose to the top and the leftover “whey” was fed to the pigs so it was a dual purpose.
After the kids were grown and moved off the farm, Beth and Jerald moved into the village of Cashton. Beth went on to school at WWTC in LaCrosse and earned a degree in dietary management. She then served as the dietary manager at Norseland Nursing home until retirement.
Beth is survived by her son, Robert (Heidi) Cary, daughters, Janna Olson, Deb (Tim) Hundt, Anne (Mark Fluekiger) Cary; brother Terry (Kim) Thomas, sisters, Kay Sullivan and Elaine (Merle) Mueske; brother-in-law, Ed (Joanne) Cary; grandchildren, Victoria (Kevin) Asauskas, Zachary Cary, Angel (fiancé Vincent Servais) Mytas, Charles (Melissa) Hundt, Cole Hundt, Caleb (Kayla) Hundt, Jacob (fiancé Sara Donskey) Miller, Samantha (Greg) Pedretti, Kayla Nelson, Inga (Angela Koehler) Barnes, Jerad (Rayna) Cary, Jesse Cary and Shelby Cary; 19 great grandchildren; along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, and great family and friends.
Beth was preceded in death by her husband, Jerald Cary who died in 2006; son, Daniel Cary who died in 2013; parents, Earl and Elva; son-in-law, Michael Olson (2014); granddaughter, Kelly Cary (2016); brothers, Dale (Betty) Thomas, Ronnie (Delores) Thomas; sister, Connie Thomas; mother and father-in-law Phillip and Josie Cary; sister-in-law, Mary (Rex) Bufton; brothers-in-law, Roger Sullivan and Jack (Eunice) Cary.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 23, 2024, 11:00 am at the Dell United Methodist Church, E11196 E. Bloomingdale Rd, Westby, WI. Rev. Jorge Ochoa will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends are invited for visitation Thursday, February 22, 2024, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Cashton, WI. John Bernard Hundt - August 20, 1933 - October 01, 2023

Departed: 10/01/2023 (Cashton)
Obituary Preview: John Bernard Hundt, 90, of Cashton, WI, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Sparta, WI.
John was born August 20, 1933, to Frank and Agnes (Silha) Hundt. The family moved to Cashton when his father bought a small farm and farm implement business. He attended and graduated from Cashton High School.
John was a gifted welder and spent his career working at Hundt Implement. His days were filled traveling to farms in the area to fix equipment that had broken down. In 1991 he was blessed to meet and marry Rose (Leis) Mayer. John was thrilled to have a best friend and traveling partner but also a built-in family. He and Rose lived in Cashton where they enjoyed traveling with friends, playing cards, going out for long drives in the country, and enjoying time with their countless family and friends.
John had a love for going to Hatfield taking family and friends boating, skiing, and hunting. He and his buddy Ernie Schm itz made many trips north. He loved to hunt in Hatfield and at Ft. McCoy, and always had a squirrel dog. John looked forward to his hunting trips, and he only forgot to bring his gun twice. He would play cards anytime he could find a game and had his own stool at Huber’s Bar.
He loved filming events with his 8mm movie camera. He documented the good times with family and friends during his trips to Hatfield, Christmas celebrations and other parties. John’s farm in the valley was his pride and joy where he enjoyed taking friends there to swim, fish and go 4 wheeling. John’s Amish neighbors were there to help him out if he needed it and in return, he was there for them anytime they needed it; and loved when their children would come over and skate on his pond.
John is survived by his brother Tom (Gloria) Hundt; sister-in-law Donna Hundt of Cashton, WI; and many nieces, nephews; along with Rose’s children, Kathleen (Allan) Johnson of La Crosse, WI, John (Mary) Mayer of Safford, AZ, and Robert (Jody) Mayer of Minnetonka, MN; and all of their children and grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife Rose; siblings Raymond (Sally) Hundt, Jerome “Butch” (Martha) Hundt, Donny (Nook) Hundt, Frankie Hundt, Agnes (Milton “Buck”) Blair, and Jim Hundt; nephew, Dennis Blair; nieces Patty Simpson, Judy Dixon, and Kari Strand.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cashton, WI. Father Michael Klos will officiate. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends are invited for a visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
John’s Family would like to thank the staff at Maplewood Assisted Living in Viroqua and Rolling Hills in Sparta for their kind and respectful loving care. Family asks that memorials be given to a charity of choice in John’s memory.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, accomplishments, and details about their life. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and the community about the passing of a loved one.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share memories and stories, and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing an obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and any notable accomplishments. It may also include details about funeral services, memorials, or charitable donations in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?
