William Joseph Cross - May 29, 1949 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Hot Springs)
Obituary Preview: William, Joseph Cross, known to family as, Billy, passed away, April 17, 2024 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Born on Galveston, Texas on May 29, 1949. Billy grew up on the island and was always proud to carry the local badge of honor, "Born On Island - BOI." Billy was a Texan, a Dallas Cowboys fan, and a huge Elvis and Dolly fan.
Despite the intellectual and emotional challenges of his life, which exacerbated with age, Billy found Jesus as a child. Some question his poor decision making, and subsequently question life decisions as a reason to condemn him and assume God rejected him. We are grateful that when we are adopted by the Father, we are adopted for eternity. Billy is now mentally, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and spiritually healed and enjoying time with his Savior.
Billy was instrumental in bringing our young family back to church. In the 1960s, after a difficult childhood and our family's difficult divorce, our single working mom and the four younger children moved back to Galveston. Billy decided we needed to go to church. We're all grateful for that as we joined Bible Baptist Church, of Galveston. His decision has affected almost 100 family members for Jesus.
Talking to Billy you'd find some common denominators: if you asked him, "Can I get anything for you," his answer was, "a million dollars." He showed up for free food. Many times he'd go somewhere he didn't want to be as long as there was free food. He cracked himself up, quite frequently. He loved talking about Texas. He enjoyed being around people who were talking about the Lord. He loved being around family, even if he were only sitting and watching. And, you should never serve him a glass of tea with a teaspoon and lemon.
He retired from Walmart after 3 decades working in Mexia, TX, Galveston, and Hot Springs, AR.
Billy moved in with our mom in May of 2008, just a few months before Hurricane Ike hit the Island. The family home and all belongings were lost in the storm. This prompted their move to Hot Springs, to be closer to family.
Billy and our mom loved visiting churches with local relatives and did so, frequently, from 2009 - 2012. At that point, he primarily attended Crossgate Church of Hot Springs. His Sunday School class was kind and loving to him.
Billy is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Cross, his mother, Helen (Enbey) Buss, oldest brother, John Cross, and that little dog with the misnomer, "Angel." He is survived by our sister-in-law, Gloria Cross (our late brother John), of Mexia, TX, brother Ed Cross (Oksana), of Hot Springs, sister Lillie Skerry (Paul), of Shirley, MA, brother Danny Cross (Carol), of Benton, along with more than 50 nephews and nieces, several cousins, and a load of great "Uncle Billy" stories to share.
Thanksgiving and Christmas will never be quite the same.
Visitation will be at Caruth-Hale Saturday, April 27, from 9:30 to 10:00. Services will be officiated by Rev. Theodore Cross, from 10:00 to 11:00. Burial will be at Old Rondo Cemetery, in Rondo, AR at 2:30.

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Hot Springs)
Obituary Preview: It comes with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Brian Boyce Grant on April 14, 2024, at the ripe old man age of 45.
Survived by his loving wife, Amber Grant; children, Triston, Arianna, and Olivia; and granddaughter, Alayna. He also leaves behind his parents, Cristal (Mark) Blue, Clint Patton, and Vic (Penny) Grant-Forga. His siblings, Donny (Ktrina) Patton, Brandi (Chris) Nichols, Ashley (Ronnie) Colvin, Chase Patton, Dakota (Amanda) Patton, and Mason (Tea) Thornton; grandparents, Charles and Melva Thornton and Clinton Patton who will fondly remember his vibrant spirit. He is also survived by many loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends who cherished his company.
You may know Brian as the owner of Discount Developers and Flex Fitness, but he was so much more than that. Everyone who knew Brian understood that it was always all or nothing with him. Everything he did, he did big (you've seen his truck). He always brought energy and laughter to the room—sometimes a little too much, but that's Brian, always loved showing his butt (you've probably seen that too). He loved the outdoors; whether it was kayaking, fishing, hiking, camping, or scuba diving, he wanted to be a part of nature. He also loved 'getting jacked, tan, and juicy AF'! His passion for fitness and love for loud clothes and shoes always had him standing out in a crowd. Most importantly, however, he loved his family. There was nothing he wouldn’t have done for us, and nothing we wouldn’t have done for him. He will always be remembered, cherished, honored, and celebrated. We love you Brian. We love you big.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please comment on Caruth-Hale Funeral Home’s website or reach out on social media to be added to the contact roster. Brian celebrated life in a big way, and that’s exactly how we’ll celebrate him. Thank you all for your love and support.

Ruth Elizabeth Bates - September 17, 1942 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Hot Springs)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Elizabeth Bates was born on September 17, 1942, to Louis and Hazel Oliver in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She rejoined her parents and her husband, David Bates, in Heaven on April 13, 2024, one year from the date of her diagnosis of cancer.
Ruth, the youngest of five children, graduated in 1960 from Hot Springs High School. Following high school she started working and did not stop until June 2023, at the age of 80. While working as a secretary at Whittington Elementary and then Eastside Elementary Schools, she developed a love of working with children. Although she detoured and worked as an insurance adjuster with Crawford and Company and then with Weyerhaeuser, she never lost her love for teaching. Later, she juggled working full-time, owning and operating the Bald Mountain Softball Park, and going back to college without complaining or missing a step. Her actions were a model for others to follow.
When her daughter, Robin, was a senior in college she challenged Ruth to go back and finish her degree and become a teacher, and she did. She graduated at the age of 50 from Henderson State University and taught for the next 14 years. Her favorite teaching assignment was as a reading specialist at Leary Schools. “Seeing children starting to read and come to love reading was the best feeling I ever had as a teacher.” After retiring, she wrote several books for children.
Ruth retired in 2007 she and David traveled. Before he died in 2017, the couple had been to 49 of the states - never made it to Hawaii - as well as Paris, France.
Ruth loved to eat pie and a favorite thing of hers was to go with her friends from Sunday School to restaurants just to have pie and coffee. Unfortunately, none of them were good with directions and often took “the long way” to get where they were planning to go.
In 2020 when COVID shut down schools the need for online teachers grew. Once again, Ruth’s skills as a teacher were needed. Even though she had to learn how to manipulate cameras, Google documents, and other technological challenges, she taught young children how to read. In June 2023 she signed off for the last time and ended her career in education.
On April 13, 2023 she was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She did not endure the disease alone. Robin, Drake, and Kayce were able to be with her until her last breath. Robin, nicknamed “the Warden” by Ruth’s friends, took her to doctor appointments, University Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City, and UAMS in Little Rock for procedures and hospital stays, not to mention more doctor appointments and hospital stays in Fayetteville and Rogers.
Ruth and Drake loved watching NCIS, the Rookie, and Monk together and having ice cream when Robin said “no.” The last day she could sit up, Wednesday, the 10th, she spent the day creating a door design for Kayce’s preschool classroom.
She loved watching the Arkansas Razorbacks in all sports. The day she designed Kayce’s door, her friends, Becky and Tommy brought her an autographed bobble-head by Coach Eric Musselman. More than the Razorbacks, she loved college women’s sports — especially Kim Mulkey.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Hazel Montgomery, her husband of 54 years, David Bates, and three brothers, Edward Gene “Pete” Oliver, Bill Oliver, and Manley Oliver.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Leonard Beckwith of Hot Springs, her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Randy Hilton of Texarkana, her two grandchildren, Drake Welch and Kayce Welch of Fayetteville, her sister-in-law, Judy Parker of Alexander, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Highlands Oncology Group in Fayetteville for the exceptional care she received through this ordeal, especially Dr. Lynsay Brautnik and her nurse practitioner, Amelia Gleber. Drs. Lyle Burdine and James Meek at UAMS in Little Rock, as well as The Hope Cancer Center in Springdale, Arkansas.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 18, 2024, at the Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, 155 Section Line Road, Hot Springs, Arkansas, from 5-7 pm. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 19, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home, at 10:00 am. Another memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 20 E Dickson Street, Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Tuesday, April 23, at 10:30 am.
Donations can be made to the Hope Cancer Center, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. Springdale, AR 72762.

Leonard Max Wittman - March 26, 1933 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Hot Springs)
Obituary Preview: Leonard Max Wittman passed away peacefully at his home in Hot Springs on March 27, 2024 one day after his 91st birthday. Max was born on March 26, 1933, in Stuttgart, Arkansas. Max was preceded in death by his father, Leonard J. Wittman, his mother, Wilamena (Rittman) Wittman, and his sister, Patsy Ahrens. Max is survived by his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Goetz Wittman, his daughter, Tracy Dunn and her husband, Steven (Mountain Home), his grandson, Matthew Dunn and his wife, Jessica (Port Richey, FL), and his granddaughter, Katherine Young and her husband, Cole (Tampa, FL) and a niece, Linda Syler (Doug).
Max was raised in Stuttgart, attended St. John's Lutheran School and graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1951. After high school Max joined the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army, he attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. It was during this time that he met his wife, Phyllis. After graduation, he and Phyllis moved to DeQueen, where Max worked for Dierks Forests Company and Weyerhaeuser Company as a manager in the Wood Products Division. At the time, there were no Lutheran churches in DeQueen, so Max became a Methodist. He served as chairman of the board at the churches in DeQueen and Hot Springs, and taught Sunday School, led Bible and book studies and served in many other capacities within the church. Over the years, Max has volunteered with the Gideons, served on various civic boards, served as a Stephen Minister and volunteered at The Caring Place.
Max was a friend to many, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and had a deep and unfailing love for his Savior. He had a good sense of humor, most of it self-deprecating, laughing at himself. In high school he was an excellent athlete and throughout his life maintained a passion for sports and the Arkansas Razorbacks. He also enjoyed duck hunting and fishing and spent many days doing both with his grandchildren. He enjoyed singing hymns, which he often did to inspire his family in the duck blind on those mornings when nothing seemed to be flying. Many wonderful memories were made during the times he spent with his family at his home on Lake Hamilton. Max loved the Lord and rarely missed an opportunity to share his faith with others. Max admonished his family with an ageless, timeless message that we, as believers, are indwelt with the Holy Spirit and God promised to never leave us and never forsake us.

Why are obituaries important?
