Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information for those who wish to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide an opportunity for loved ones to share memories and condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with writing the obituary. The writer should be someone who was close to the deceased and can provide accurate and meaningful information about their life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be more suitable for online platforms or memorial websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and is often longer and more narrative in style.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows individuals to reflect on their life and legacy. It can also help to ensure that their story is told accurately and in their own words.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have specific guidelines for submitting obituaries. You can usually find this information on their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, there are many online platforms and websites that allow you to publish an obituary. These may include funeral home websites, online memorials, social media groups, or dedicated obituary websites. Online obituaries can reach a wider audience and remain accessible for years to come.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspaper obituaries can range from $50 to $1,000 or more, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options. Some funeral homes may also include obituary publication in their services.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

What is an online memorial?

An online memorial is a virtual space where friends and family can share memories, condolences, and stories about the deceased. These memorials often include photos, videos, and other multimedia elements to celebrate the person's life.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may require 24-48 hours' notice before publication, while online platforms can publish immediately.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the publication or platform's policies. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to minimize errors.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the passing of your loved one, you can opt for a private or limited-access online memorial. This way, you can still share information with close friends and family while maintaining privacy.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. This information can be included in the obituary along with details about the charity and how to donate.

How do I handle condolences and messages from strangers?

If you're concerned about receiving condolences from strangers or unwanted messages, consider using a private online memorial or limiting access to close friends and family. You can also set up a condolence book or guestbook at the funeral home or memorial service.

Can I create a video tribute or slideshow with the obituary?

Yes, many online platforms allow you to create multimedia tributes that combine photos, music, and text. These video tributes can be shared alongside the written obituary to create a more dynamic memorial.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them active indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform before publishing.

Can I republish an old obituary?

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate your loved one's personality and spirit. Just be mindful of your audience and ensure that any humor used is respectful and tasteful.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy when writing an obituary, verify facts with multiple sources (e.g., birth certificate, family records), proofread carefully before submission, and have others review for errors before publication.
