Mary authored a memoir of her life entitled, Mary Camilla Rinehimer Diehls; A Good Long Life in which she shared the following in her own words:
“ Mary Diehls has lived three lives.  During her first life, Mary grew up in the small town of Afton, Wisconsin, where her parents ran the local general store and nobody was a stranger.  Her relatives lived throughout the neighborhood, so she was always near family.  She lived in a unique house, where one side was the family home, and the other a local tavern, run by her father.  Her care-free childhood was spent playing with the neighborhood children, ice skating on the local pond, picking apples, visiting relatives daily, taking care of her horse, and as she got older, working in the store.
Her second life started when she married Evan Diehls.  She and Evan bought a dairy farm and worked hard to make it a success, also raising five boys at the same time.  The cold winters in Wisconsin helped them eventually to decide to move to Howard County Missouri and raise beef cattle. The unexpected and sudden death of Evan from an aneurysm started her third life, as a widow. She became an avid horseback rider, and active member of the Eastern Star and a devoted grandmother and great grandmother.”
A memorial service honoring Mary’s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Carr-Yager Funeral Home in Fayette.

Joy Marie Phillips - August 10, 1930 - October 14, 2023

Departed: 10/14/2023 (Fayette)
Obituary Preview: August 10, 1930, to October 14, 2023, Age 93 Joy was born on August 10, 1930, in Howard County MO, near Fayette, MO, the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Pemberton) Settle.  The third of five siblings and the oldest of three daughters, Joy grew up during the depression and World War II on the family farm near Fayette.
After graduating from high school in 1948, Joy started college in the fall at Central Methodist College (CMC).  She met Admiral (Ad) Noah Phillips of Doniphan, MO, who was also attending CMC on the GI bill.  A year later, they married on June 12, 1949, at what was then the Ashland Christian Church, just over the hill from the family farm. After Ad graduated from CMC in 1950, they moved frequently due to Ad’s military service as a chaplain in the Air Force, then later Ad’s service as a Methodist minister in the Missouri West Conference.  Towns include Dallas, TX where son David was born; Granger, MO; Long Island, NY; El Paso, TX where son Richard (Dick) was born; back to the family farm in Fayette (while Ad served in Korea); Presque Isle, ME where daughter Joy was born; Kidder, MO; Grant City, MO where son Lee was born; Stewartsville, MO where son Paul was born; El Dorado Springs, MO; St Joseph, MO; Trenton, MO; and Salisbury, MO.
Joy was a devoted mother and grandmother, a classic “mama-bear,” showing her love for family by always protecting, sacrificing and advocating for her children.  To help financially support the family, she finished her undergraduate degree and master’s degree while teaching and raising a family in St Joseph and Trenton.  In Salisbury, Joy and Ad opened their home to foster children and foreign exchange students.  Also while in Salisbury, grandchildren started arriving, and Joy was an active and devoted grandparent.  She showered her grandchildren with fun times and love, helping them learn how to study, cook and quilt.  She was always ready to play a game and often carried a game in her purse.  She would help with babysitting and sewing projects and made many items for her kids and grandkids: a “quiet” book; Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls; suits; dresses; christening dress; M C Hammer pants; curtains galore; etc.  She was an excellent cook; family favorites were homemade bread and biscotti, hot buttered biscuits and rhubarb or gooseberries, and especially her homemade crescent rolls.  Several of the grandchildren learned to make them with her.
Joy learned many skills including needlecraft, knitting and quilting, and she enjoyed the friendship of friends who shared her passion.  She particularly enjoyed Hardanger embroidery, an intricate style of Norwegian needlework.  She made beautiful heirloom Hardanger wedding samplers and birth samplers for her children and grandchildren.  Joy was also an excellent quilter; one of her pride quilts was “an impossible 30-year quilt” with over 2200 pieces.  A fond memory for family members and friends is when they would receive a crocheted snowflake from Joy in the mail every Christmas.
After Ad died in 1984, Joy continued to teach in Salisbury for several years, retiring in 1995.  In 2005, she moved to Independence, MO, then in 2013 to an independent living villa at The Fremont Senior Living in Springfield to be closer to family.  Joy was a member of Wesley UMC and P.E.O., and enjoyed the friendship of those wherever she lived. During retirement, Joy also enjoyed visiting most of the national parks in the US and Canada with family.  She especially loved birding and hiking.  In 1993, she started working summers at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO and continued working summers for 15 years, mostly in the library.  She loved hosting family and friends, guiding them around the Y, Estes, the Rocky Mountain National Park and points beyond.

Departed: 08/07/2023 (Fayette)
Obituary Preview: Pamela Andrena Noland 1968 – 2023
Pam was born in Independence, Missouri on February 29, 1968.
She graduated from Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri in 1986 and Merrill University in Jefferson City, Missouri in 1987 with a degree in Cosmetology.
On April 30, 1988, she married Larry Noland.  Two years later, shortly after the birth of their first child Cory, Pam and Larry both surrendered their lives to Jesus and accepted Him as their Savior.  Together, they served the Lord at Open Door Baptist Church in Columbia and welcomed two more children, Matthew and Andrena.
Pam’s love for her Lord and family were evident to everyone who met her, and her bright smile and beautiful laugh lit up any room she entered.
In 1998, the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where both she and Larry attended Bible school.  In addition to attending school, Pam also homeschooled their three children and served faithfully in the married student ministry at the college.
In 2002, Larry and Pam were accepted with All Points Baptist Mission to serve as missionaries in the Western Canadian Artic, an area largely unreached with the gospel.  With three children in tow, they left everything behind in the states to share the gospel and care for the people in the remote village of Aklavik.  Alongside ministering with Larry through their church, Pam helped start and was the director for the community garden and greenhouse for several years.
In 2021, Pam was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer.  After 20 years serving the Lord in Aklavik, Pam and Larry returned to the states so Pam could receive the cancer treatment she needed.  In April of 2022, they joined Sweet Springs Baptist Church in Huntsville, Missouri where they continued to serve the Lord together.  Pam taught ladies and children about the Lord and helped support young homeschool families.
As the cancer spread and Pam’s homegoing became imminent, Pam and Larry traveled to Callahan, Florida to spend the remaining weeks of her life with their children, their daughters-in-law and 3 grandsons, Walker, Chase and Everett.
Holding Larry’s hand, Pam went home to heaven on August 7, 2023, where she is finally whole.  She is preceded in death by her mother, Norma Whitmarsh-Stocker and her two grandchildren, Rylan and Haven Noland.
On earth, her legacy o love for the Lord and family continues through her husband, Larry, son Cory, daughter-in-law Shelley (sons Walker and Chase), son Matthew and daughter-in-law Annah (son Everett), daughter Andrena and her father-in-law and mother-in-law Irvin and Janet Noland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and information about surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to inform others of the person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, education, military service, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include funeral or memorial service details and any charitable donations or tributes in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have an online submission form, while others may require you to email or fax the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed away. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate their life and make the tribute more engaging.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make minor corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published. However, this is not always possible, so it's essential to proofread carefully before submission.

What if I want to publish an obituary in multiple newspapers?

You'll need to contact each newspaper separately to submit the obituary and discuss their specific requirements and fees. You may also consider using an online obituary platform that allows you to publish in multiple locations simultaneously.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personalization to the tribute. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits for copyrighted material.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publication varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish within hours or days, while others may take longer due to editorial review processes or print schedules.

Can I request corrections or changes after publication?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in the published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately to request corrections. They will do their best to make changes as soon as possible.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be overwhelming. Consider consulting with family members, friends, or a funeral home for guidance on what information is essential and how to structure the tribute.

Yes! Many online obituary platforms allow you to include links to social media profiles, memorial websites, or charity pages. This can help visitors learn more about the person's life and legacy.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform for their policies on archiving and accessibility.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Absolutely! Memorial websites offer a unique way to celebrate a person's life and legacy through photos, stories, videos, and other multimedia content. They can also serve as a central hub for sharing memories and condolences.

What if I'm concerned about privacy when publishing an obituary?

If you're worried about sharing sensitive information or protecting surviving family members' privacy, consider omitting certain details or using vague language when necessary. You can also consult with a funeral home or trusted advisor for guidance on balancing transparency with discretion.

Can I republish an old obituary from years ago?

In some cases, yes! If you're looking to reprint an old obituary for a special occasion or anniversary, contact the original newspaper or online platform to inquire about their policies on reprinting archived content.
