Departed: 04/30/2024 (W Warwick)
Obituary Preview: Jose Roig passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Concepcion “Conchita”, and his two daughters, Mila and Patti. He was 89. Born in northeastern Spain in a small farming community on July 10, 1934, Jose was the son of the late Jose Felix and Maria Roig, and brother of the late Juan Roig.
Jose began his culinary journey in Barcelona, where he met his wife, Concepcion, or as he liked to call her, Conchie. Jose worked honing his culinary skills in Barcelona until he was asked to move to French Algiers with Conchita to be a chef for a wealthy French family. It is here where they had their first child, Milagros “Mila”. A few months after the birth of their daughter, the French Algerian War broke out and they decided they needed to leave. They packed up and headed to Paris where Jose spent the next six years continuing to perfect his culinary skills under several French chefs in several restaurants. After about 6 years, Jose again was asked to move to work at another restaurant, this time in Montreal, Canada. They packed up and off they went. About 3 years there, he again was asked to move to work at another restaurant. Packing their bags again, off they went to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania where he worked for The Covered Wagon. It was 1969. The following year, their second and final child was born, Patti. Several years passed, then Jose decided to open a restaurant in downtown Philadelphia. It proved to be very successful, but he decided to open a different restaurant in a more family-oriented community; so, in 1980, he and Conchita decided to buy an old house from the late 1800’s in northeast Philadelphia, and convert it into a restaurant and home for their family. They called it La Paella Tio Pepe. It specialized in Spanish and French influenced cuisine, as Jose utilized all his prior work experience, and used vegetables and herbs he grew on the property in his large garden. The restaurant was a mainstay for the community for all the years they were there, until in 1999, Jose decided it was time to retire. They sold the restaurant and embarked on their final journey. With Mila married and now living in Rhode Island, they decided to join her. Their daughter Patti soon followed, moving to Rhode Island and bringing the whole family back together. Jose loved living in Rhode Island, with all its coastal communities. It afforded him the opportunity to spend time with his family, and continue his hobbies of gardening and especially fishing. Finding many great spots around Rhode Island, the family enjoyed his many catches. His was a full life, well spent.
Jose is survived by his wife Conchita of Warwick, daughter Mila and her husband Richard Salvadore of East Greenwich, daughter Patti and her husband Ray Lynch of Warwick, as well as his is five grandchildren, Catherine, Christina and Lauren Salvadore, and Patrick and Lucas Gesmundo.

Obituary Preview: Robert Bruce Baxter, known as Bob to all who loved him, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024, at the Green House Homes, #15 at Saint Elizabeth Community, East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
The only child and devoted son of Francis Hess Baxter and Blanche Edna Teeple Baxter, Bob was born on November 16, 1936, and spent his formative years in Massillon, Ohio. There, he developed a work ethic by delivering the newspaper on his bicycle in the early mornings before school. Bob was a proud Ohioan who enjoyed sharing that he hailed from the town of the Massillon Football Tigers, where Paul Brown started his football dynasty.
After completing his education at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, in 1958, Bob was brought to Rhode Island by the United States Navy. There, he was stationed in Newport and served on the USS Charles H. Roan, Destroyer. He retired as a Lieutenant, and it was during his time in the Navy that Bob developed a love of travel and a desire to see the world.
Much of Bob's career was spent at the Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank in Providence, Rhode Island, where he retired as a bank officer. He believed the best way to build a community was to support and invest in local, Rhode Island businesses. He rounded out his career as a Financial Consultant with Smith Barney in Providence. He was known as a "belt and suspenders" kind of person who believed in measured and safe decisions and also wore beautifully appointed suspenders while caring for and looking after his client's savings and retirement investments with honor and integrity.
Bob was a former member of the Turks Head Club, University Club, and Wannamoisett Country Club, where lifelong friendships were made on and off the golf course. He also loved history, the United States, and genealogy and was a member of the Rhode Island Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution, Order of Founders and Patriots, and Society of Colonial Wars.
A lover of red cars, the New York Times Crossword, an avid reader, and a Midwesterner at heart, Bob always said hello to strangers when he took his daily walks. He loved gardening and admiring the annual and perennial blooms that attracted many birds, butterflies, and wildlife to his small properties.
In the spring of 2002, Bob was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer just after his retirement. After undergoing experimental treatment and surgery, Bob was given an additional twenty-two extra years of life. He never took those years for granted and cherished his second chance at life. During this time, Bob witnessed the growth and development of his most extraordinary gift of all, his seven grandchildren. He attended their baseball, soccer, and field hockey games, visited them on their farm, shared his childhood train set, and instilled in them a love of reading, education, and history.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of nearly forty years, Mary Jane "Susan" Baxter. Together, they shared a passion for traveling the world, gardening, making friends, savoring wine, and indulging in a good piece of blue cheese.
He is also survived by his five treasured children: Brook Anne Baxter of North Kingstown, RI, Lee Robert Baxter (Lynn Gray Baxter) of Harmony, RI, Kirby Murphy (Paula D. Rasco) of Pascoag, RI, Kevin Kennedy Murphy (Theresa Tevyaw Murphy) of South Kingstown, RI, and Christine Kennedy Murphy Costello (Kevin M. Costello) of Canaan, NH. Bob was the proud grandfather to: Olivia Baxter, Landon Hess Baxter, Lydia Brook Baxter, Matthew McCann Murphy, Margaret Kennedy Murphy, Abigail Rose Murphy, and Charles Landrigan Costello.
Bob measured his life not by grand gestures but by the small, reflective, and joyful moments he shared with others. He consistently showed up for those in his life and in the end, he lived a life well-lived. Kindness is what defined him. Bob's life was made complete by quietly helping others and the love of his friends and family. Robert Bruce Baxter was a gift to all who knew and adored him. His generosity of spirit will always be remembered and live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Departed: 04/12/2024 (W Warwick)
Obituary Preview: Isabella “Bella” Grace Fontes, born on Sunday, February 26th, 2023, passed away on Friday, April 12th, 2024 at the tender age of 13 months at Boston Children’s Hospital surrounded by the love of her parents and brothers. Isabella was the treasured daughter of Andrew and Ashley (Bolarinho) Fontes of West Warwick, and the adored younger sister of Quincy Fontes and Oceanna Fontes, and twin sister of Amari Fontes.
Despite all she had to endure in her short 13 months, Isabella was the happiest girl with a strength that was unmatched. She loved to watch Frozen and loved to sit up in her blue tumble form chair while snuggling her pink flamingo lovey and her 1st Easter lovey. In fact, Bella loved all of her stuffies. Playing peak-a-boo with mommy and daddy, snuggles from her brothers, and always getting kisses from her big brother, Quincy, were some of her favorite things. Without a doubt, her smile was infectious. When she had a leak from her trach tubing, her little voice that came through was the absolute cutest thing you have ever heard. We could never forget the conversations she had with us, the bubbles she would blow to us, or the kisses she would give.
Bella was blessed with the absolute best team of nurses from Women & Infants from the time of her birth until July, and the received that same amount of love and care throughout her time at Boston Children’s Hospital. She loved her snuggles from the night shift nurses/attendings when she needed the extra love. Her nurses loved to dress her up, especially one special nurse practitioner who customized her many outfits which included her first birthday, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter. Her own daughters even made bracelets for Isabella. We are truly thankful to all those who loved our sweet girl. They loved her until the very end.
In addition to her parents and brothers, Bella is survived by her maternal grandparents: Gina Kanis & Jose Bolarinho of East Providence; maternal great-grandfather: Leo Kanis; aunt and uncles: Justine Bolarinho, Joey Bolarinho, and Jason Bolarinho; and many cousins, extended family and friends, by whom she was loved beyond words. She was predeceased by her paternal grandmother: Kelley Hoard.
Visitation for Bella will be on Monday, April 22 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick, RI. Her funeral service will be held at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 23 at 11:00 AM, immediately followed by her burial at Quidnesset Memorial Cemetery, 6365 Post Road, North Kingstown.
