Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, achievements, and funeral arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorials, and charitable donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries may be longer due to the lack of space constraints.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a nice way to personalize the obituary and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may have specific requirements for formatting, length, and content. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and with dignity. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life accomplishments and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, its circulation size, and the length of the obituary. Online obituaries may be free or low-cost. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it has been published in print. However, online obituaries may allow for corrections or updates.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately after submission. Traditional newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish an obituary.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so feel free to include lighthearted stories or humorous anecdotes that capture their personality.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the funeral details, you can simply omit that information from the obituary or indicate that services will be private.

Can I include charitable donation information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest memorial donations in lieu of flowers. Be sure to include the charity's name and address in the obituary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately to request corrections. They may issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have access to an old printed copy of an obituary, you can scan or transcribe it and publish it online through various platforms or social media channels.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary?

Yes! When writing an LGBTQ+ inclusive obituary, use respectful language and acknowledge the person's gender identity, sexual orientation, and relationships. Be mindful of using pronouns correctly and avoiding heteronormative assumptions.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider enlisting the help of a family member or friend who knew the deceased well. You can also consult with a funeral home director or online resources for guidance.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or interests.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

Most online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link into your own posts or messages.

Can I create a memorial website instead of publishing an obituary?

Yes! Memorial websites allow you to create a dedicated space for sharing memories, photos, and stories about the deceased. They can be especially useful for those who prefer not to publish in traditional newspapers.
