Obituary Preview: James Mark Ceriani age 70 of Boalsburg, PA; died on Wednesday April 13, 2022 at Providence Point Healthcare in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on May 15, 1951 in Brockway, PA; he was the son of the late Julio J. and Elaine Martin Ceriani. James was a 1969 graduate of the Brockway High School. After high school, he went on to attend Penn State University where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1973 and obtained his Masters Degree in 1975. Retired,  James was employed as a Ceramic Engineer at O-I in Ohio and later for Kimble Glass in New Jersey. James was raised in the Catholic Faith. He was a member of the Harris Township Lions Club, enjoyed being a volunteer at the Penn State Arboretum and was a member of the Audubon Society. He enjoyed playing golf. James is survived by a brother William (Flozanne) Ceriani; 2 sisters: Holly (Mark) DeVries and Laurie (Richard) Audenaert; 2 nieces: Janel DeVries (Terry) Geesey; Claire Ceriani and a nephew Eric James (Samantha) DeVries. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by an aunt Anna Ceriani. There will be no public visitation. All services will be private at the convenience of his family. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Eugene "Gene" A. Strishock - September 09, 1930 - April 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: August Eugene “Gene” Strishock age 91 of Clayplant Road Brockway, PA; passed away from natural causes on April 4, 2022 while a guest at DuBois Village Person Care Community in DuBois, PA. Born on September 9, 1930 in Brockway, PA; he was the son of the late Stephen Edward and Mary Ann Sedlock Strishock. Gene was a graduate of the Brockway Area High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran stationed in Germany where he proudly served his country in the 103rd Engineer Battalion earning the Army of Occupation Medal Germany and the National Defense Service Medal. Upon completion of his tour of duty, he returned to Brockway and began what would become an illustrious sales career which he thoroughly enjoyed. Gene was a family man and an avid story teller who enjoyed nothing better than being outside on his John Deere, and bringing smiles to anyone lucky enough to share a moment or two of his time. Gene was an active member of St. Tobias Catholic Church in Brockway where he assisted with daily mass, serving as Eucharistic Minister, assisting in numerous funeral mass’s, and was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. One of his greatest joys at the church was delivering food to home-bound families during the holiday seasons while sharing stories, hugs and smiles to brighten their days. Gene and Margaret Louise “Peggy” Rittenhouse Strishock were married on September 14, 1963. Surviving family members are daughter Bridgit Ann Strishock of Brockway, PA; son Christopher Gene Strishock and his wife Gina Verne Strishock of Sandy Hook, VA; and son Darin Nicholas Strishock of DuBois, PA; 2 grandsons Mark and Brandon Huffman. He is also survived by a brother Daniel W. Strishock and wife Joan of Oakton, VA; sister-in law Rhoda Strishock of DuBois, PA;  sister Dolores Farrell and her fiancé Steven Blau of Derwood, MD; and a sister Marilyn Shaffer and husband Raymond also of DuBois.  In addition to his parents and his wife of 46 years Peggy, he is also preceded in death by a brother Stephen A. Strishock, a sister Erma Lou Walters and her husband Claude Walters. Calling hours will be on Thursday, April 7 from 4PM to 8PM at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway. Born on December 13, 1921 in Ridgway, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Cecilia Scherer Rees. Zita was baptized at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Ridgway, and attended and graduated from St. Leo’s Catholic School. After graduation she attended business college in Harrisburg, PA. On September 7, 1957 she was married to William P. Verne also at St. Leo’s Church, and he precedes her in death. Retired, Zita had been employed at the Ridgway Record Newspaper, at Brockway Glass and also at St. Tobias Church where she remains a member to this day. She also is a member of the church Rosary Society and the Brockway Progressive Women’s Club. Zita was an avid bowler. She is survived by a son William (Jane) Verne of Catawba Island, Ohio; 2 grandchildren: Antonio (Shelby) Verne and Kristina (Ghattas) Alkhoury;  4 great grandchildren: Sophia Verne, Giovanni Verne and Dominik Alkhoury, Vincenzo Alkhoury. She is also survived by 72 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband she is also preceded in death by siblings Paul, Eugene, Margret Mary “Sis” Dussia, Karl, Rose Mary Yarmey, Adeline Rees, Yvonne “Bonnie” Weidert and Patricia Koval. Born on November 24, 1952 in DuBois, PA; he was the son of the late Eugene Cromwell and Mary Olive Longwell Stuart. On March 27, 1993 he was married to Lori Johnston and she survives. Retired, Bob was a Registered Landscape Architect and he and Lori owned and operated Terra Nurseries for over 30 years. He was a member of the DuBois Presbyterian Church. Bob enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of the Hill Top Howlers Snowmobile Club, was active in the Case 219 organization opposing a land fill in the local area, was a member of the ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects), the Christmas Tree Growers Association and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed reading, especially history, hunting and just being outdoors. In addition to his wife Lori he is also survived by a sister Nancy (Charles) Poust of Pine Grove Mills, PA; a niece Mary Margaret (Tom) Barrentine; a great niece Kristy Brown and a great great nephew Phoenyx, a nephew John (Lauren) Stuart, a niece Caroline (Tom) Francis; great nieces Sara and Anna Francis, and a nephew Robert (Shannon) Poust; great niece Elliana Poust and great nephew Anthony Poust. Duttry and he preceded her in death on November 2, 2021. After graduating from high school, Pauline attended beauty school in Erie, and was a licensed beautician for over 30 years. She also enjoyed working at Conneaut Lake Park in the summer months for many many years. Pauline also was a mother and a homemaker. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Falls Creek, was a member of the Rosary Society and the Slovak Social Club. Pauline enjoyed cooking, baking and watching the QVC channel. She is survived by 2 daughters: Cindee (James Hicks) DeJohn and Sharon Mooney Ream both of Falls Creek; 3 sons: Scott (Cindy) Duttry of Byrnedale, PA; Kirk (Nancy) Duttry of Reynoldsville; Rick (Pinkie) Duttry also of Falls Creek; a brother Lawrence (Dee) Weisner of Hawaii; 9 grandchildren: Heather Ecklund, Larry “Beaner” DeJohn, Leslie Rinyu, Jimmy Duttry, Michael Duttry, Travis Mooney, Paula Roland, Jason Duttry and Maria Wright. Pauline is also survived by 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Obituary Preview: Paula Jean Prechtl, age 63, of Brockport, Pa passed away peacefully on March 14th, 2022 surrounded by family at her home.  Born on March 20th, 1958 in Dubois, Pa, she was the daughter of the late H. Robert and Avismae (Starr) White and sister of Sherry (John) Frazier who preceded her in death.  Paula was a loving wife, sister, mother and grandmother. She was married to Tim Prechtl on October 4, 1986 and he survives. Paula is also survived by a daughter Jenna (Alex) Suppa; sons Eric (Sue Ann Gilbert) Kriner and Brent Kriner; four grandchildren, Nathan and Aubrey Kriner and Adelynn and Elaina Suppa. She is further survived by her mother and father-in-law Patty and Gerald Prechtl; siblings Bob White and Cathy (Mark) Facchine and many nieces and nephews.  Paula worked at the Brockway Area School District for many years and loved working with the children.  Paula spent her life thinking of others, making countless connections and friends along the way.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren and swimming in her pool.  Paula grew flowers every season that benefited many charities.  She loved to walk in the outdoors with her cousin, Don Cherubini and her friends.  Paula was a member of the United Methodist Church.  She helped for many years with Vacation Bible School and would plan the outside games and activities for the children.  She will be remembered as the kind and loving woman that she always was.  The family would like to thank the special people in her life who were there for her during her last year, including “her people”, Sue Gilbert and Nancy Walk.  Friends and family will be received on Friday, March 18 from 6PM to 9PM at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 19 at 11AM at the Brockport United Methodist Church with Pastor Ann Foor officiating. Violet DeMario Kopp - November 16, 1919 - March 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Violet DeMario Kopp age 102 of Kearney Road, a life long resident of Brockway, PA; passed away peacefully on March 1, 2022 at the DuBois Nursing Home. Born on November 16, 1919 in Brockway, PA; she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nicolina Mascaro. Violet was married to Joseph DeMario her first husband who passed away in 1976. She later married John Kopp of DuBois who passed away in 2007. Retired, many residents of Brockway will remember Violet as the friendly smiling front desk clerk at Paris Cleaners on main street where she worked for over 30 years. She was a member at St. Tobias Church in Brockway and was a member of St. Tobias Sodality for women and was honored to be chosen May Queen, a religious celebration in honor of the Blessed Mother. She was president of the Brockway Progressive Women’s Club from 1963-1966. Always interested in learning more she enrolled in a two year correspondence course for Dress Making and Interior Design, later opening a dress shop in her home. For several years during the 1940’s she walked a mile or more to teach Catechism to young parishioners at St. Tobias Church. Violet traveled extensively during her lifetime and her favorite country was Italy. She enjoyed working in her garden and was talented in art, crafts, sewing and painting which she took up later in life. One of her proudest moments came when she was awarded a Top Prize in an amateur water coloring contest her very first year. She will be remembered by her family and many friends as someone who throughout her life cared about the welfare of others, whether it was visiting the sick or giving a helping hand when needed. Everyone was always welcome in her home. Violet was a devoted mother to Mary Janet (Larry) Youngdahl of Brockway and Mark (Karen) DeMario of Virginia Beach, VA; grandmother to Christopher Viglione of Reynoldsville, PA; and her many nieces and nephews who knew her as “Aunt Vi”. She was the last surviving member of the Mascaro family generation. In addition to her parents and her husbands she is also preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Violet never lost her enthusiasm for life and wanted the memory of her to be about living life to the fullest and to be an inspiration for kindness and goodness. “ Death leaves a heartache difficult to heal; love leaves memories no one can steal.” Taken from an Irish gravesite, written in 1806. Robert E. "Oz" Calhoun - March 30, 1923 - February 27, 2022

Obituary Preview: Robert E. “Oz” Calhoun age 98 of Calhoun Road, a life long Brockway, PA resident,  died on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at the Jefferson Manor in Brookville. Born on March 30, 1923 in Brockway, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Olive Morrison Calhoun. On March 13, 1943 he married Patricia Ward and she preceded him in death on October 17, 2014. Retired, Robert had been employed at Brockway Glass in Central Maintenance in the Repair Crew. He was a U.S. Army, WW II Veteran serving in the Army Air Corps as a Nose Gunner on a B-25 in the Pacific Theater. Robert was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Brockway. He enjoyed hunting, bowling and was an avid farmer all of his life. Later in life he enjoyed planting crops to feed the deer. He was a member of the N.R.A. and the Brockway Sportsmen’s Club. Robert and Patricia enjoyed traveling to Winter Haven, Florida during the cold winter months, and they made and enjoyed these trips for 15 years. He and Patricia also participated in the Appalachian Wagon Train for 6 years,  Pat riding in the wagon and Robert on the horse. They also operated their own green house for 6 years. Robert was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  He is survived by a daughter Patricia Hamblin of Brockway; a son Clifford (Sheri) Calhoun also of Brockway; 9 grandchildren: Shane (Julia) Hamblin of Cross, SC; Clayton Calhoun of Brockway; Megan (Nick) Frank  of Martinsburg, WV; Ty (Shannon) Calhoun of Erie, PA; Courtney (Josh) Snyder of Punxsutawney, PA; Stormey (John) Collins, Cali Craven, Zebulon (Casey) Undernehr all of Bentonville, AR;  Elijah (Rebecca) Undernehr of Tulsa OK; 14 great-grandchildren: Zachary and Kane Hamblin; Jax Calhoun, Ava and Quinn Snyder, Anthony Meley, Maddox and Maisie Craven, Eleanor and Juniper Undernehr, Liam and Brooklyn Calhoun, Xander and Berkeley Collins and 3 great great grandchildren: Givonni, Zelda and Poppy Meley. He is also survived by a sister-in-law Kay Calhoun; a daughter-in-law Penny Calhoun both of Brockway and a son-in-law George Undernehr of Bentonville, AR as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife he is preceded in death by a daughter Robyn Undernehr; a son Dennis Lee Calhoun; 2 sisters: Mary Belle Corbett and Bonnie Bell and 3 brothers William, Dwight and Wayne Calhoun. He then married Alda M. Matthews and she survives. Retired, Lee had been employed at Brockway Glass as a Mould Maker. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a member of Parson-Marnati Post #95 of the American Legion in Brockway. Lee was a member of the Tri-County Church in DuBois. He enjoyed anything to do with cars especially racing, flea markets and yard sales. Lee had a particular quality to him in that he never in his life met a stranger. He could talk to anybody, about anything, anywhere his journeys in life took him. Born on December 8, 1940 in Pittsburgh, PA; she was the daughter of the late George and Anne Neilson Klotz. On June 14, 1975 she was married to Richard A. “Dick” Moore and he survives. Retired, Judy had been employed at Brockway Glass as a Trucker for 25 years. She was a member of the Sugar Hill Presbyterian Church.  In her youth, Judy wanted nothing more than to be a cowgirl and rode horses in the rodeo, specializing in the barrel race. More recently, she enjoyed reading, baking and was an avid pet lover. She also loved to go on motorcycle rides with her husband and was a member of H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group). Judy was a wonderful caregiver to her friends and the community. In addition to her husband she is also survived by 2 daughters: Angela (Ben) Stopper of Oakland, CA; Shelli (Tom) Fordyce of Fredonia, PA; 1 son: Mike (Joan) Gardill also of Fredonia, PA; a sister Dolly Walbert of Claysville, PA; 5 grandchildren: Candice (Chris) Chiccarino, John Gardill, Megan VanSickle, Justin Gardill, Jenna Gardill and one great-grandson Callan Chiccarino. Judy is also survived by 2 nieces: Jennifer and Theresa, a nephew Joe; a brother-in-law Tom (Debbie) Moore and a sister-in-law Gale Clark. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a daughter Sherri Gardill; a niece Donna, a nephew Jimmy and a brother-in-law Jim. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 26th 2022 at the Sugar Hill Presbyterian Church 11939 Route 28 North Brockway, PA 15824 with Pastors Dave and Emily Koehler officiating. Born on October 7, 1931 in Johnstown, PA; he was the son of the late Ronald L. and Hazel J. Vinz Sager. He was married to Janet Windus and she preceded him in death. Retired, George was a programmer at Manufactures Hanover in Manhattan. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. George was an avid collector and shopper, and was very computer savvy. His greatest enjoyment came from the outdoors and wildlife. He loved wolves, birds, flowers and more wolves. After his parents and his wife passed away, George always had a companion dog – he loved dogs. After he was injured from a fall from the roof of his house, he was unable to have a pet of his own. Thankfully he often had visits from family members who would bring their dogs to visit “Uncle George” or the numerous visits by Therapy Dogs at the DuBois Nursing Home that would spend time with him and brighten up his day. He is survived by a brother Richard (Judy) Sager, a sister-in law Theresa Sager; nieces Mary Jane (Bob) Flook, Sheri West, Sheila Nunemaker, Ronda (Greg) Frenette, Linda Sager, Nancy Woody; a nephew Larry (Michelle) Sager; and cousins  Larry (Debby) Miller, Tim (Pam) Miller and Wanda Miller; great nieces Erica Nunemaker and Rachel Sager; great nephews Adam (Erin) Flook, Ryan (Lizzie) Flook, Colin Nunemaker, Matthew Frenette, Christopher Frenette, Bradley Woody and two great great nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife he is also preceded in death by a brother Ronald Sager. Retired, John was a school teacher at the St Marys High School where he also served as the high school wrestling coach. He also owned his own fly fishing business for many years. John loved to travel and made many visits to Europe, India and South America. He also made numerous trips to the continent of Africa. John is survived by 2 sisters: Clementine “Dena” Heglas of North Kensington, MD; Maria Dickstein of Miami, FL; 3 brothers: Clyde (Carol) Salandra; his twin brother Anthony (Kay) Salandra and Donald (Karen) Salandra all of Brockway. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by 2 brothers: Cesare and Alphonso Salandra. There will be no public visitation. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Church in Falls Creek with Fr. Ed Walk Presiding. Burial will follow in St. Marys Cemetery in Reynoldsville. He is survived by 3 daughters: Marilyn (Jack) Tully; Sandra (Alan) Groves both of Falls Creek and Jean Bunyan of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Heather Farkas, John Tully, Tim Groves, Susan Timcheck, Katie Russell; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents and his wife he is also preceded in death by a brother Robert Lundberg, a sister Betty Jean Lill, a son-in-law Edward Bunyan and a grandson Michael Tully. There will be no public visitation. Friends will be received on Friday, January 28 from 10AM to 11AM at the Beechwoods Presbyterian Church 14 Beechwood Road Falls Creek, PA 15840. Anthony R. Berardi - November 25, 1951 - January 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Anthony R. “Tony” Berardi, 70, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Saint Peters Hospital in Albany, NY.
Born November 25, 1951, in DuBois, PA, he was the eldest son of Dominick and Edith Berardi. He married March 4, 1978, to Linda Hood and celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Anthony attended and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Dubois, PA. He went on to earn two Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh.
Anthony started his career at RadioShack where he was quickly promoted to District Manager in Rochester, NY and then subsequently promoted again to District Manager in Boston, MA.  He spent six years in Boston where three of his children were born prior returning to Rochester, NY to join Kodak.  Anthony worked at Kodak for 19 years, during which time he welcomed two more children into his family and rose to become the World Wide Director for Magnetic Media and Retail Operations. After a long tenure at Kodak, Anthony went on to take positions at ITT as Manager of International and Homeland Security Business Segments and Corning as Manager of Global Portfolio Management before eventually retiring.  In retirement he spent considerable time volunteering with local business development groups and Veteran non-profit groups in the Rochester, NY area.  He helped entrepreneurs create successful businesses of their own as part of SCORE and worked with the Veterans Outreach Center to help veterans become financially stable.
He is a devout Catholic; as a young boy he served as an Alter Server at Saint Tobias in Brockway, PA where this love of the church carried throughout his life and his faithful dedication to attending weekly mass became an inspiration to others.
Although Anthony’s life is marked by significant professional achievements and a commitment to the Catholic Church, he felt his single greatest accomplishment was his family. He took tremendous pride in being a faithful husband and a deeply loving father to his five children.  Anthony valued nothing greater than family and spent his life as a living example of those values.
Throughout every avenue of his life, Tony made life-long friendships and was deeply touched and endeared by all of these individuals. He carried these friendships very close to his heart and they were with him until the very end.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Berardi of Clifton Park, NY; his mother Edith Berardi of Clifton Park, NY; his five children Nicholas (Melinda) Berardi of Vienna, VA; Christopher Berardi of Washington D.C.; Catherine Berardi of Rochester, NY; Theresa (Phillip) Leslie of Milford, PA; Megan (Levi) Pascher of Troy, NY and his seven grandchildren (his 8th due any time), his brother Randal (Michele) Berardi of Lancaster, PA and a large extended family.
Friends will be received from 5-7 pm Sunday, January 16, 2022 at the Carlson-Shugurts Funeral Home in Brockway, PA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Monday January 17, 2022 at St. Tobias Church in Brockway, PA with Msgr. Charles Kaza presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Tobias cemetery. On September 8, 2007 she was married to Charles “Chuck” Sherwood and he survives. Emily was employed at Highland View as the Unit Secretary, and was just promoted to Business Office Manager. She enjoyed crafting and Baking, especially birthday cakes for her children which were always over the top. She also enjoyed going on side by side rides especially if they were for a benefit, and afternoon rides from home to the Dixon Corner Store for ice cream with the kids. In addition to her father and her husband she is also survived by a daughter Claire, a son Liam, a sister Rachel Snell and her paternal grandmother Elaine Harris. She is also preceded in death by her paternal grandfather John Harris and her maternal grandparents Albert and Vesta Irvine. At Emily’s request all services will be private at the convenience of her family. Burial will be in the Temple Cemetery at Hazen. A Celebration of her Life Service will be held later this year during the summer months and will be announced.
