Departed: 08/29/2014 (Hope)
Obituary Preview: Eugene Walter McWhirter, age 85, (retired Boeing engineer and supervisor for 37 years) passed away at his home on August 29, 2014. He was born November 17, 1928 in Dover, Tennessee to James Walter and Lucy (Biggs) McWhirter. After the death of his mother in 1939 when he was 11, the family moved from the farm in Dover to Nashville, Tennessee. Following graduation from Cumberland High School in 1948, Gene worked in his father’s wood-cabinet shop and with his older brother J.B. as a painter, carpenter, and home builder. In 1950 Uncle Sam chose Gene to serve in the 4th Infantry Division, trained at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Fort Benning, Georgia, and was deployed to Germany where he served for 18 months. After his release from the Army, Gene attended the University of Tennessee on the G.I. Bill. The Boeing Company was moving B-52 work from Seattle to Wichita in 1956. Gene was hired as an engineer and a dream came true. As a kid Gene built model airplanes of all kinds and collected cards from cereal boxes of fighter planes and bombers. Working for Boeing was exactly what he desired. Gene was always involved in sports – tennis, softball, baseball, basketball, roller skating, football, and bowling. In 1956 he met Arlene in a bowling alley and on November 23, 1957 she became his wife for life (56 years). At age 27 he thought if he could hit a moving baseball, a stationary golf ball would be easy. He acknowledged it wasn’t that easy but kept trying until he was over 80 years old. Gene loved to stay busy in the yard, garden, or his woodcraft shop. We would not forget how much he enjoyed fishing or bird hunting with his son Doug, in-laws, and friends. His prize catch was a 4-pound rainbow trout caught near Pinedale, Wyoming. The fish was mounted and now hangs in a special place in the McWhirter home in Wichita, Kansas. Gene is survived by his wife Arlene, of the home in Wichita, Kansas, son Douglas, his wife Ann, and a granddaughter Sara Kaitlin McWhirter of Cody, Wyoming, oldest brother James Biggs McWhirter (J.B) of Nashville, Tennessee, and many nephews and nieces on both sides of the family.
