Jean Barbara Graves was born in Atlanta, GA December 16, 1932 to Louis and Mattie Graves. She was educated in the Public Schools of Atlanta, graduating from David T. Howard High School in 1950. Jean was voted to be Miss David T. Howard.  She joined Liberty Baptist Church as a young girl when Rev. B. L. Davis was Pastor and dedicated her life to Christ. Her aunt, Madeline Graves was a member and teacher in the Sunday school.
She did her college training in Secondary Education at Alabama State College graduating in 1955. It was at Alabama State that she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Before leaving for college she met the love of her life, C. J. Tookes. They dated and became engaged while in college.  When she graduated from college, her parents gave her hand over to her fiancé’ in marriage. On August 24, 1955, she was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, C.J. Tookes. God blessed this union with the two sons, Darryl and Quintin. Darryl was born in 1960 and Quintin was born in 1963.
She and C.J. moved into their new home during her final year of college. In the fall of 1955, she began working as a teacher in the Atlanta Public School System. She eventually trained to teach hard of hearing students. She retired in 1981 from the Atlanta Public School System.
She was a supportive wife and mother. C.J. and Jean were married 61 years until his death in 2016. They remained living in the same house C.J. took her over the threshold in until he transitioned. She spent her remaining years at the residences of her sons.
Jean’s most prized achievement was her marriage to C.J. for 61 years, and the loving family they built together as a team. They successfully raised their two sons in a loving and supportive Christian home. Her family was always her top priority. She was committed to helping her sons to become the well-rounded, secure and responsible men they are today. She taught her sons the value of prayer.
In addition to being a loving wife and devoted mother, Jean was also a woman committed to her faith and bringing others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Jean played the piano and at one time she was the pianist for one of the church’s choirs.
Jean along with her husband, C. J., devoted time to expose their sons to different experiences with family travel. She was an invaluable role model to her sons and others. Her two grandchildren, Quintin II and Alexandria, were also her pride and joy.
Jean always demonstrated a kind and elegant demeanor. She treated everyone the same with a humble and kind spirit. She will be remembered for her kindness, unwavering faith, and the love she exhibited to everyone. She was a gracious lady, respected and admired by many for her warmth and compassion.
Sunset arrived for Jean Barbara Graves Tookes,  Saturday morning on April 16, 2022. God came and told her, “Thy faithful servant, come home and rest.” She leaves to cherish her memory, two children, Darryl (Venus), Quintin (Leslie); one brother-in-law, Albert Tookes; two cherished grandchildren, Quintin II and Alexandria; one step grandchild, Peter Hayes; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Edward M. Hughes - April 29, 1964 - March 09, 2022

Departed: 03/09/2022 (Atlanta)
Obituary Preview: Edward Milton Hughes
Edward Milton Hughes was born on April 29, 1964 in the US Airforce Hospital in Toul, France.
His father, William O. Hughes traveled here with his wife Elaine M. Hughes and their older son William Lowell.  The family spent a little over 2½ years before returning home to Atlanta, meeting extended family and adding Laura Elaine to the local Hughes-McEwen family.
Edward started his education at Henderson’s Preschool on West Lake Ave, down the street from his maternal grandparents.  Before the end of kindergarten the family was off to Oslo, Norway and became adequate skiers.  After a short stay in Fort Knox Kentucky and 3 years in Okinawa Japan, Edward and his siblings were good in the snow and at home in the water.  These moves left Edward with a flair for language and working with people.
Upon returning to Atlanta, Edward attended F. L. Stanton Elementary school, Frederick Douglass High School, graduating in 1982 and North Georgia Military College.
After an active healthy adult life, Edward lost his right leg below the knee and developed kidney problems from an infection caught while helping nearby families with flood damage.  He was also diagnosed as diabetic that year.
Edward journeyed forward after receiving a prosthetic leg and became active in several groups and organizations while receiving dialysis treatments three times a week.  He was a Support Group Member and Group Facilitator with the Amputee Foundation of Greater Atlanta before starting SWAAMP Support Group – Southwest Atlanta Amputees.  Edward was a patient and family adviser for one of the Emory University Hospital Renal units as well as a peer counselor for patients that recently became amputees.  He worked at Mercer University, Georgia Tech and Georgia State with Physical Therapist as a practice subject and information source for students.  Edward also was active for several years with the Amputee Coalition Annual Conventions. Gibron’s words from The Prophet seem poignantly fitting in thinking of Edward’s life while facing the grief of his death:
the deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.  When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.  When you are sorrowful, look again into your heart and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
Edward leaves behind his sister Laura and his mother Elaine, aunts, uncles and a host of cousins.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 11 a.m. at our chapel, with Reverend Damon P. Williams, PhD., officiating.  The remains may be viewed on Friday, March 18, 2022 at the chapel from 1 to 5 p.m.

Bobby Lee Rosemond - October 04, 1947 - January 30, 2022

Departed: 01/30/2022 (Atlanta)
Obituary Preview: Bobby L. Rosemond Highlight Reel
Bobby L. Rosemond joined our ancestors on January 30th, 2022.  Bobby was born October 4, 1947 to Florie Rosemond and Elliot Rice, in Seneca, South Carolina. His greatest influence as a child was his grandfather, George Mack Rosemond.  Bobby was his mother’s only child.  He was one of three children, including Sandra and Pamela, from his father.  He was a happy child that grew up playing in the creeks and running through the fields of rural South Carolina with his cousin/brother, Gerald.
Florie and lil Bobby moved to Camilla, GA during his childhood years, where he spent the rest of his formative and teen years. After graduation, Bobby enlisted into the United States Air Force and was stationed in Tucson, Arizona. He worked alongside older black men who looked out for him and gave him very profound advice about life and how to conduct himself as a young black man in a military and country that viewed him as inferior. Bobby’s experience had a profound impact on his world view.
After serving one enlistment in the Air Force, he decided to use his G.I. Bill and enroll into Albany State College.  He was a fulltime student, majoring in Business Administration and worked two jobs, so he could send money home to his mother, something he had done since he entered the service.  Attending Albany State College was a pivotal time in his life.  In addition to being a fulltime student; working two jobs; throwing weekend parties; and pledging Kappa Alpha Psi, which he eventually dropped because his time was limited, he met the love of his life, Carolyn Williams (Booga Bear) of Eufaula, Alabama.  This was the beginning of their 51 year journey.
After residing in Albany for a short period of time, Bobby and Carolyn migrated north to Atlanta, GA.  He decided to settle in Decatur versus Marietta, because he wanted to raise his family in a strong black community. Bobby continued his 26 year, military career with the Army National Guard, grew a successful accounting business, and retired from Delta Airlines after 10 years.
Bobby was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.  While he is physically gone, he continues to live through his wife, Carolyn Rosemond; his children, Devany Tonae King (Eric), Abdalla Rashad Tau, and Maurice Jamall Rosemond; his grandchildren, Denzayah King, William King, and Marissa Rosemond; his sister, Sandra Beverly; his nephew, George Beverly; and his cousins Gerald Rosemond, James Kirksey, Curtis Rosemond, Doris Fuller, Hilda Collins, Terry Rosemond; and his aunt, Ann Rosemond.

Sandra later met and married her beloved husband Michael Moultrie, and they had one daughter, Maya Michelle Moultrie. Sandra valued her family and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, family member, and friend. Maya, Sandra’s daughter, was her greatest pride and joy. She often shared with family and friends, how having Maya in her late years was God’s greatest gift to her.
Preceding her in death were her parents; sisters, Katrina, Cheria (Leon), and Carolyn; and nephew, Lance. She leaves to worship her cherished memories her husband and daughter, sister, Dr. Donna Turner-Asante (Kofi); great aunts, Glennelle Marcus, and Alice Moultrie; great uncle, Huley Moultrie (Doretha); aunts, Estella Duhart, Mattie Persley, Velma Moultrie, Julia Mae Thomas, Ernestine Johnson, Sarah Turner, and Ann Turner; uncle, George (Gloria) Turner; first cousins considered sisters: Gwen, Veronica, and Kim; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Susie Mae Jones - November 16, 1923 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Atlanta)
Obituary Preview: Susie Mae Adams (Bell) Jones
Susie Mae Jones was born November 16, 1923.  Our matriarch, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, surrounded by many loved ones passed away peacefully on January 22, 2022.
Susie was a lifelong resident of Atlanta, Georgia.  She loved to and did venture far to many places in the world in her lifetime, almost always a "family trip".
Susie was fiercely loving, dedicated, loyal and a tenacious cheerleader and supporter for her entire family whether through blood or addition. She graciously molded many through the strength of her love and caring to which created in large part what the family is today.
She found pleasure in many things, homemaking, cooking, gardening, music, reading and a variety of social and family events. She loved the outdoors and preserving the nature around her.
It is so fitting that on this first day of national "Black History Month" Susie is being laid to rest and will be commemorated in that heritage for that in all of history, there's no one the family knows that more generously contributed to the lives and character of the many people that were privileged to have known or met her.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years Mr. Lewis C Jones. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?
