Thomas Bergan Brown - April 09, 1965 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: WILTON - Thomas Bergan Brown loved his family and his friends and led a life cultivating those relationships and cherishing the experiences he shared with the people he loved. Bergan died on Easter Sunday April 17, 2022, surrounded by his family, just eight days after his 57th birthday and a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.
Love is what mattered most to Bergan and the love he had for his sons Owen and Devin reached a depth he did not know he could experience. The number one joy in his life was watching Owen and Devin grow, laugh, and mature. He once said he was born to be a dad and the reason he knew it, he said, was because he felt so happy and natural in that role.
His best experiences were always the ones he shared with Amy, Owen and Devin, and one of their labs, Lucy or Brownie.
Bergan felt blessed and privileged to be a member of many families - his immediate family, his sibling family, his college family from SUNY Plattsburgh, his Grateful Dead family, his McGregor family and Brown Brothers, where their workers were treated like family. He made genuine connections and so many people were touched by his love and kindness.
Bergan spent his working years in business with his brother and felt lucky to have such a wonderful, loving partner in Mike. He also worked with Kearney Brown Real Estate.
Basketball was one of his passions. He played in the backyard constantly as a kid and then for Bishop Maginn High School. He coached at the VI Community Center, refereed, and coached Owen's teams whenever he could. Bergan was a natural athlete from the time he played baseball at Westland Hills Little League right up until recently when he played golf with his dear friends. Some of them shared in the celebration of his two holes in one.
The outdoors gave Bergan a lot of joy. He reached 42 of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, canoed, swam and took the boys fishing all over, at Lake George, Forest Lake, Cape Cod and Florida.
He was also a passionate sports fan and loved his Yankees, Dolphins, Lakers and Bruins.
For Grateful Dead shows, Bergan relished the chance to share a ticket, always buying extras so that he could sprinkle just a few miracles on his fellow Deadheads. He liked to reward the quiet, mellow fans.
Bergan was fun and he loved to get people together. He had a good, playful sense of humor, even during his chemo treatments.
In the last few years, Bergan expressed his love even more often. He said I love you at every opportunity and let people know he appreciated them. He became clear that love was the most important thing to give, and he taught us all to remember that.
Bergan was a special, loving person and enriched countless lives with his words and actions. His lovelight will shine on in the many lives he touched.
Bergan was predeceased by his parents, Kathleen Bergan Brown and Thomas W. Brown. He is survived by his wife, Amy Whiteman Brown, his sons, Owen and Devin, and lab Brownie; his siblings and their families, Cailin, J., Fiona and Liam Leary; Kerry, John, Kathleen, Shelagh and Maeve Conley; Megan Brown, Jeff, Justin and Brynn Anderson; Michael Brown and Karen Hauth; his in-laws, Robert and Rita Whiteman; Anne, Matt, Alex and Braeden Parenteau; and Wendy Whiteman and Roy Ketring.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday at 11:30 am at St. Clement’s Church, Saratoga Springs. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bergan’s family on Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Ave. Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Kathleen "Kate" O'Brien - September 29, 1949 - March 29, 2022

Departed: 03/29/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: ALBANY – The light of our lives has passed on.
Kathleen “Kate” O’Brien died on March 29, 2022, at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born September 29, 1949, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Ellen Killian.
Kate grew up in Deferiet, NY. She attended Carthage Augustinian Academy and later graduated from both SUNY Potsdam and Maria College. During her second year at Maria, she met a first-year law student. She boldly predicted the night they met that they would marry, which happened the following July. Kate was a devoted mother. She spent years as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, loyal supporter and volunteer at National Little League and Central Babe Ruth, and religious education instructor. She hosted endless gatherings and attended more football and baseball games and tennis matches than could be counted.
Kate was employed as a Registered Nurse by Albany VA Hospital and later by the Albany County Health Department.
She was a voracious reader, lover of going to the movies with contraband popcorn, and never met a sale that didn’t yield at least one bargain. The back door at 311 was always open and the kitchen table is where Kate held court. No matter the hour (the later the better) she served as confidant, coconspirator, and counsel. She loved … everything. Preferably in excess. There wasn’t a matching T-shirt, flashing hat, sparkly knickknack, or bag of candy she could resist (or pretend to resist). She loved going out to eat, being near water, spending time with friends and family, and was the self-appointed ringleader of every adventure. Her laugh was uncontrollable and contagious. Kate was the most generous and thoughtful friend and sister one could hope for. Her seat at the head of the kitchen table can never be filled.
Kate is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Charles E. O’Brien; her children Owen O’Brien, Mary (Christopher) Stehr, and Kevin (Elizabeth) O’Brien. She is the cherished grandmother of Connor and Nolan Stehr. Kate is the sister of Barbara (Joseph), Richard (Carol), James (Patricia), Patricia (Gary), and Kevin (Mary Beth). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10:00 at St. Vincent DePaul Church, 900 Madison Ave., Albany. All attendees are asked to wear a facial covering.  Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Church, prior to Mass. Private interment will follow in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. At the request of Kate’s family and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, (givenowlls.org), 1 Marcus Blvd. Suite 104, Albany, NY 12205 or Kidney Research Institute, (kri.washington.edu), Box 359606, 325 9th Ave., Seattle, WA 98104. Ruth C. Hans - October 04, 1918 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Albany)
Obituary Preview: Albany - Ruth C. Hans, 103, peacefully passed on March 24, 2022 at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born on October 4, 1918, in Albany, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (McCardle) Bleichert.
Ruth was retired from The Hartford Insurance Company where she was a supervisor for many years.  She was a 59 year member of the West Albany Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and was awarded Sister of the Year in 2018.
Known as Gram to many, she loved life and spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, especially with her late niece MaryAnn Tozzi and her husband Tony.   She spent many summers at her camp in Saranac Lake.  Her camp bedrooms would be full and any number of grandchildren could be found sleeping on her couches, cots, or wherever space could be found.  She would not have wanted it any other way.  Many happy hours were spent with her loved ones in front of camp fires, playing cards or just sitting and chatting while overlooking the lake.  In recent years Gram spent many happy hours with family camping on The Great Sacandaga Lake.
While it was painful to some of her grandchildren, Gram was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and would never allow a bad word to be said about “her guys”.  Baseball was a passion she picked up when she was in her 80’s but her amazing longevity allowed her to be fan for over 20 years. She never missed an opportunity to watch their games on TV.
The family was blessed that she was on this earth for 103 quality years.  She would never allow an illness to keep her down long.  Before you knew it she would be back on her feet.  Right up until her last days she was able to recount events and experiences throughout her life with clarity and great detail.
Ruth passed on the 15th anniversary of her husband’s death.  Ruth and Victor Hans were married on June 21, 1939 and celebrated 68 years together.  She was also predeceased in death by her two daughters, Claire E. Why are obituaries important?

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary as part of their services.
