Obituary Preview: Thor O. Tornberg, 72, of Ishpeming, died Friday morning, September 22, 2023, at his home, following an illness.
He was born December 7, 1950, in Ishpeming, a son of the late John and Effie (Kangas) Tornberg. He was a 1969 graduate of Ishpeming High School and a lifelong area resident.
Thor married Susan Junttila in Ishpeming on September 13, 1969.
He was employed as a welder and a roofer for several construction companies over the years. His interests included hunting, fishing, restoring classic cars, but most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.
Thor is survived by his wife, Susan Tornberg of Ishpeming; children, Christine Tornberg of Ishpeming, Debbie Tornberg of Gwinn, John (Catherine) Tornberg of St. Clair, MI and David (Kerry) Tornberg of Negaunee; 9 grandchildren, Ron, Alexsis, Jordan, Jaimie, Meghan, Jake, Taylor, Jillian and Olivia; great-grandchildren, Jaicyon and Alaysia; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Rita Saari, Jean Isaacson, John Tornberg, his infant brother and his nephew Randy Peterson.

BRIAN JON PICKETT - September 05, 1954 - July 16, 2023

Obituary Preview: Brian Jon Pickett made his final Irish goodbye on July 16, 2023. He was born with perfect teeth and perfect feet in Highland Park, Michigan in 1954, and raised in Waterford, Michigan. As an adult he had the strength of 10 men, the eyes of a hawk, and the reflexes of a cat. He served four years in the U.S. Navy without ever setting foot on a boat, yet sent coconuts home to family. He parlayed his skills as a radio technician into broadcasting, and then to information technology, serving as a vocational education teacher at the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District, and later as its Director of Technology. In retirement at his home in Michigamme, he was a tree farmer; avid outdoorsman; and a loyal and active member of the Baraga County Democrats and the Superiorland Woodturning Club.
He is survived by his daughters, Heather (Jason Schneider) Pickett and Pearl Pickett; brother, Dale (Ronda) Pickett; sisters, Mary Kay Thompson, Anita (Steve) Schmansky, Karin (Dave) Hopcroft, April (Warren) Simon and Lu Olivich; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a doting great-uncle. Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Jean (Fleming) Pickett and John “Jack” Pickett.
Ever the wallflower, he has requested there be no service. He was generous to a fault and committed to evolving in pursuit of social progress. His memory can be honored through gifts to Habitat for Humanity, Feeding America, and United Negro College Fund. You may also honor his memory by killing a local squirrel. WILLIAM LOUIS OTTMANN, Jr. - April 07, 1935 - February 28, 2023

Obituary Preview: William Louis Ottmann, Jr. passed away on February 28, 2023 at the Mission Point Nursing Facility in Ishpeming.
Bill was born in Ishpeming on April 7, 1935, to William and Marguerite (Tatrault). He graduated from IHS in 1953, served in the US Army (1958-60), Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines, and subsequently worked on the iron ore boats, where he occasionally navigated iron ore freighters in Great Lakes’ harbors. That distinction earned Bill the good-natured nickname “Captain’s Pet” from his mates. In retirement he lovingly cared for his parents, his Aunt Blanche (Ottmann), and cousin Steve Gleason.
Bill was a gentle soul with a fine sense of humor and a keen memory, the latter of which served him well as the family historian. He had a generous heart, and on occasion surprised his parents with exotic gifts from Europe, such as German glassware and Irish linens. Throughout his life Bill was an avid reader and maintained an interest in current events until the end. He will be missed.
Preceding Bill in death are his parents; brother, Jim; sister-in-law, Ann and their daughter, Jan; cousins, Larry Nault and Paula Olson; and friends, Daniel Harrington and Hartley Swanson. Survivors include niece, Joan (Ron) Rhoades and their sons, Jim and Steve; cousins, Pauline (Bill) Grawey, Blair (Lisa) Tatrault, Joseph Tatrault (Susie Hoffmann), Audrey Pettersen (Gary Nelson), Jerry (Etta) Simula, Tom (Cindy) Simula, Albert (Beverly) Nault, Stephen (Sarah) Nault, and Mary Brigid Dickson, Larry Nault’s daughters, Barbara Henderek and Brigid Nault; and special friends, Roy Dymond, Bill Terres, and Victor Valente.
Special thanks to the Mission Point Nursing Facility staff for their caregiving efforts throughout the past few years. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Rev. Ryan Ford officiating. Visitation will be held in the church from 10 am until the time of the Mass. Interment with military honors will be held in the Ishpeming Cemetery in the spring. HARRIET V. NOWELL - February 22, 1924 - February 15, 2023

Obituary Preview: The fourth and last born child of Henry and Lillian (Lind) Oskierko, Harriet Nowell of Ishpeming and recently Negaunee passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, to be reunited with her husband of 53 years (Kenneth), her parents and three siblings, Edward Oskierko, Mary Jane Doubek and LaVerne Glassner, just shy of her 99th birthday.
Born February 22, 1924, Harriet attended Chicago schools, graduating from Bowen High in 1942. She met and married Ken in 1951 in Chicago where he served in the 5th Army and then moved to Ishpeming following his discharge in 1952. She loved her life in the UP and considered Ishpeming her little piece of Heaven.
She has been a proud and active member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming for 60 years where she enjoyed Bible studies and being a member of Golden Link. She volunteered for several years assembling Wesley's famous pasties. She was employed at the R.G. Williams Medical Clinic for 20 years, retiring in 1985. Harriet found pleasure and satisfaction working with the public and being able to assist those in need.
Harriet and Ken were blessed beyond measure with the birth of their only child, Kim Eloise. Kim married Paul Midthun of Minneapolis and they had grandsons, Ryan Midthun of Negaunee and Nowell (Audrey) Midthun of Charlotte, NC. The boys were their pride and joy. Harriet was then blessed with 5 great-grandchildren, Trevor Midthun of Ishpeming, Lydia and Norah Midthun of Waldorf, MD and Genevieve and Connor Midthun of Charlotte, NC.
Harriet is survived by her daughter, Kim and son-in-law, Paul who cared for her in their home for the last 14 months; grands and great-grands listed above; nieces, Linda and Tina Slager, Susan (Lloyd) Lasher, Lynn Glassner, Mary Jane Gill Drummond; nephews, Edward (Barbara) Oskierko and Rodney Gill; several great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins also survive.
In addition to the loss of her husband, parents and 3 siblings, she was preceded in death by her in-laws, Mary Elizabeth Matthews and Reginald Nowell, Albert Slager, Irwin Doubek, James Glassner, Marjorie Gill Bearden and nephews, Kenneth Gill and Roy Glassner.
Honoring Harriet's wishes, there will be no services at this time.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church, UPAWS, Tunnel to Towers or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

LOIS MAE ERSPAMER - May 11, 1925 - February 12, 2023

Obituary Preview: Lois Mae Erspamer, 97, of Marquette, died peacefully Sunday evening, February 12, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of U.P. Home Health and Hospice and her caregivers, Ada Dalgleish and Sue Reider. Lois was born on May 11, 1925 in Norway, Michigan, a daughter of the late Ernest and Anne (Dellatorre) Ropele. She was a 1942 graduate of Norway High School. On June 5, 1948, Lois married Jim Erspamer at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Vulcan, Michigan and together they were married for 63 years. Lois received a Bachelor's degree from Columbus Hospital (Loyola) in Chicago. She was then employed as a registered nurse at Columbus Hospital, Iron Mountain and at the former St. Mary's Hospital in Marquette from where she retired. In her free time, Lois most enjoyed following her grandchildren's sporting activities as well as baking, cooking and caring for her family. She was a longtime member of St. Michael Catholic Church as well as its altar society. She is survived by three children, Beth (Don) St.Onge, Dan Erspamer and Tom (Cathy) Erspamer, all of Marquette; 6 grandchildren, Amy (Ricky) Riley, Matt (Kim) St. Onge, Bobby Erspamer, Lynne (Nate) Taurence, Katie (Erik) Paveglio, and Bryan (Jade) Erspamer; 9 great grandchildren, Brayden, Allie, Hailey, Hannah, Morgan, Taylor, Madison, Callahan, and Locklyn; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents was her husband, James Erspamer on June 17, 2011; a sister, Ernestine Moln and brother, Marvin (Veronica) Ropele. The Erspamer family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, February 16 beginning at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Catholic Church until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 12 noon in the church with the Rev. Greg Heikkala officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A luncheon will be served in the Zyrd Parish Center immediately following the Mass. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the St. Michael Church Memorial Fund, 401 W. She was surrounded by her loving daughters and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice and the staff of Teal Lake Assisted Living. She was born in Humboldt, MI, a daughter of the late Victor and Maria (Plukka) Mustamaa and had resided in the area for most of her life. Laila was a "Rosie the Riveter" working as a machine operator for Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit during WWII. She then earned her high school diploma at Hazel Park High School in Hazel Park, MI. She worked as a long distance telephone operator for Michigan Bell where she received awards for her excellent service to the servicemen and women during a time of war. She also worked as a sales clerk at Montgomery Wards in Warren, MI, JL Hudsons in Troy, MI where she earned recognition for her service and Hagelstein Bakery in Royal Oak, MI. Laila was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Republic. She was an excellent seamstress, she also enjoyed crocheting, crafts, taking road trips and fine dining. Her family will remember her as someone who was always willing to help anyone in need if she was able to without hesitation. She is survived by her children, Dana (Sharon) Maze of Sterling Heights, MI, Rhonda (Thomas) Casselman of Negaunee, Laura Maze of Republic and Don Maze of Marquette; 5 grandchildren, Danny (Lisa) Maze, Wendy (Dan) McAllister, Andrew Henderson, Jr, Troy (Sarah) Henderson and Kara Stahl; 10 great-grandchildren; and friend, Irene Harvala of Marquette. Cook, 94, of Champion, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday morning, January 4, 2023 at Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming after a long battle with Dementia. Pauline was born on May 15, 1928 in Flint, MI to the late Andrew and Bertha (Brooks) Rising. At a young age she moved to Prudenville, MI where she was a 1946 graduate of Houghton Lake High School. Here she met her husband, Robert E. Cook and they were married February 7, 1948. Pauline worked at in Roscommon State Bank in Houghton Lake initially as a teller and loan officer then as a Vice President for NBD Houghton Lake until her retirement 1984. After retirement she and her late husband traveled the country enjoying the state parks, fishing, rock hunting and companionship with her many friends. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Roscommon. Survivors include grandchildren, Andy Finch and Christa Cook; great grandchildren, Anthony Chiaurro, Aiden Finch and Madalyn Finch; step-great grandchildren Laylla Asher and Stella Asher. Besides her parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Cook on June 5, 2001; daughters, Karen (Cook) MacLachlan on July 9, 2020 and Brenda (Cook) Finch Dec 15 2020; and her sisters, Arlene (Rising) Cousineau and June (Rising) Cousineau. Obituary Preview: Edward James Lundin, 87, long-time Ishpeming resident, passed away peacefully due to kidney failure on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility with his loving wife at his side and under the care of UP Home Health and Hospice. Ed was born on June 13, 1935 in Big Bay, MI where his father was an officer for Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Big Bay. He was a son of Clarence M. and Helen (Jeffery) Lundin. Ed served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Coral Sea Carrier from 1952-1956 and recently enjoyed going on the UP Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Ed retired after 26 years from the Marquette County Road Commission as a heavy equipment operator. He had a passion for Harley Davidson Motorcycles, and owned several new ones. Ed and his wife traveled many miles covering a lot of the United States and Canada. He was self-taught handyman, he always said, and could fix about anything except a broken heart. Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Katherine A. "Kay" Lundin of Ishpeming; sister, Helen M. Grenfell of Valencia, CA; two nieces, Cindy Saylor of Phoenix, AZ and Kim Kresch of Moon Township, PA; two great-nieces and three great-nephews; his Lundin cousins; and two brothers-in-law, John L. Mullins and Michael R. Mullins. Besides his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Byron W. Grenfell. Obituary Preview: Paul Curtis "Duck" Derocha, 65, of Ishpeming, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022 at Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming. Duck was born on May 11, 1957 in Ishpeming, a son of the late William and Clementine (Revedo) Derocha and was a lifelong U.P. resident. He was a 1975 graduate of Ishpeming High School and then attended Michigan Tech University. Duck worked in the family restaurant business for many years. He later moved to Pelkie where he was employed by the Michigan State Department of Corrections in their food service department until he was injured there. His passion was Belgium horses and farm animals. At one time he owned 20 milking cows. Duck also was a member of Marquette County Search and Rescue and was part of the original R52/131 accident extrication team, a position he held for many years with the Marquette County Sheriff's office. He was an EMT specialist and in 1982 received an outstanding achievement award for his leadership and dedication to the Marquette County Search and Rescue Unit. Duck is survived by a sister, Mary Catherine Derocha of Apache Junction, AZ; two brothers, Roger (Carrie) Derocha of Lake Geneva, WI and Joseph Derocha of Champion; also several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death besides his parents was a brother, Michael Derocha. Visitation will take place on Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church at 4 p.m. with Rev. Ryan Ford, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will take place in the Champion Cemetery. Terry was a 1983 graduate from Marquette Senior High School Terry valued his family and loved spending time with them especially his nephew Easton and nieces Vanessa and Alexis. He also was a talented artist, hand carving small intricate animals out of wood, often making walking sticks to give to friends and family. He loved to draw and had a passion for pencil and charcoal drawings. Terry loved the outdoors and had a deep appreciation for mother earth and father sky. Terry was a loving care giver and often took care of family and friends in their time of need. Terry is survived by his nephew Easton Butler of South Dakota, nieces Vanessa Butler of Marquette and Alexis Johnson of Ishpeming. Two sisters, Dawn Butler (Dave Outinen) of Big Bay and Alice (Paul) Reynolds of Marquette Several other nieces, nephews, and numerus aunts, uncles, cousins, Special friends, Chrissy Cleary (Ann Arbor), Leah Johns (Marquette), Hunter Schultz (Champion), Stan Plis (Negaunee) and his animal companions.
