Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also provide an opportunity to share memories, celebrate achievements, and acknowledge the impact the person had on others.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes an obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to capture their personality, accomplishments, and spirit.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include a photo, quotes, or anecdotes that reflect the person's character.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be suitable for online memorials or personal websites.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. A eulogy is more personal and emotional, focusing on the speaker's relationship with the deceased and sharing stories and memories.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the deceased's personality and make the obituary more engaging. However, it's essential to ensure that the tone remains respectful and doesn't offend anyone.

Should I include photos in an obituary?

Including photos can make an obituary more personal and help readers connect with the deceased. Choose recent photos that showcase the person's personality or highlight their accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Writing your own obituary can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. It can also give your loved ones guidance on how to honor your memory after you're gone.

Is it necessary to include funeral information in an obituary?

Including funeral details can be helpful for those who want to attend the service or send condolences. However, it's not required; some families may prefer to keep this information private or share it separately.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Absolutely! Many families prefer donations to a favorite charity or cause instead of flowers. This can be specified in the obituary along with instructions on how to make a donation.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error or inaccuracy in an obituary, contact the publication or funeral home immediately. Corrections can usually be made quickly, especially if it's an online publication.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes! You can still write an obituary as a way to honor and remember someone who passed away years ago. This can be especially meaningful for those who never had a formal farewell or recognition.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?

Yes! When writing an obituary for a veteran, include their military service details, such as branch, rank, and awards received. You may also want to mention any patriotic organizations they were part of.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's personality or philosophy.

How do I deal with sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

Treat sensitive information with compassion and discretion. If necessary, consult with family members or close friends to ensure that you're handling sensitive topics appropriately.

Can I write an obituary for a pet?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family and want to acknowledge their passing. A pet obituary can be a heartwarming way to celebrate their life and memory.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who died under unusual circumstances?

Treat these situations with sensitivity and tact. Focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death. Consult with family members or professionals if needed.

How do I preserve an online obituary?

You can save a copy of the online obituary as a PDF or screenshot it for future reference. Some online platforms also offer options to create permanent digital memorials or archives.

Can I update an existing obituary?

In some cases, yes! If new information becomes available or corrections need to be made, you may be able to update the obituary. Contact the publication or online platform for guidance.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. It provides a virtual space for people to come together and support one another during difficult times.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The publication timeframe varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may be published immediately, while others may take several hours or days.
