Sharon Lee Carr - July 01, 1941 - November 17, 2023

Departed: 11/17/2023 (Bloomington)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Grandma Honey. Sharon Lee Carr age 82 of Bloomington IL passed away at 4:14 PM on Friday, November 17, 2023 at Luther Oaks, Bloomington IL. The family invites friends and acquaintances to a visitation for Sharon on Monday November 27 3:00 PM-5:00 PM at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home Bloomington IL. The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Private family interment Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington, IL. Rev. Steve Evans will be officiating.
Sharon was born July 1, 1941, in Herrin, IL, the daughter of William Edmund and Evelyn Jane Gosnell Drake. She married Robert Stephen Carr on August 25, 1967, in Herrin, IL.
Sharon is survived by her greatest joys, her husband Steve, and her son Stephen (Michelle) Carr, Bloomington IL, 3 wonderful and nearly perfect grandchildren, Avery Renee, Caroline Elizabeth, Stephen Drake Carr, Jr, Bloomington, IL. She was so proud to be called “Grandma Honey” by each of them, a name which came about because she called them her “Honeybunnies” when they were little.
Sharon is preceded in death by her parents.
Sharon graduated from Herrin High School, Herrin, IL. She graduated from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Master’s Degree in Guidance. She taught in Belleville, Champaign, and Urbana, all in Illinois, Baltimore, Maryland and Jackson, Mississippi when Steve was in the F.B.I. Sharon later returned to Bloomington as a guidance counselor at Stevenson and Washington grade schools. Later in life she taught part-time at KinderCare and I.S.U.’s Child Care Center. Her greatest joy came from being with the little ones. Sharon had wonderful skills but more importantly, she had an abundance of love, particularly, for the little ones that needed it most. Sharon always realized that a teacher can’t be all things to all students, but sometimes, just sometimes, a teacher can be the right person at the right time. They can be the exact teacher that one child needed more than anything.
Sharon was married to Steve for 56 years. They were really soulmates and inseparable for all those years. As they aged, they found themselves thinking of all the yesterday and they enjoyed themselves as they aged. When Sharon passed away, a little bit of Steve went with her and his life will never be quite the same.
Sharon was loved by everyone who knew her. She was simply a good, sweet, gentle person. She had a certain simplicity in the way she lived and in the way she interacted with the people around her. She loved her little family so much and she cherished each one, particularly her son. She has gone to wait for Steve now and together they will hold hands and walk through the clouds. “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are gray, you’ll never know dear how much I love you, please don’t take my sunshine away.” Please view the obituary and share your condolences and memories online at www.calvertmemorial.com

Alma V. Samuels - April 06, 1926 - November 10, 2023

Departed: 11/10/2023 (Bloomington)
Obituary Preview: Our Mother passed away quietly on November 10, 2023 at the age of 97. Throughout her lifetime of unwavering faith in God, she was blessed with grace, strength, compassion and a kind and generous heart.
She was a devoted Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother who was filled with a spirit of unconditional love for every member of her family. She taught us to take pride in our talents, obtain an education and have a career to support ourselves. She helped all members of the family gain respect for God, life and others.
Mother was born, Alma Viola Glenn, in Little Rock, Arkansas on April 6, 1926 to Albert and Willie Marie Glenn. Her parents joined the Great Migration North and settled in Chicago, Illinois where she grew up with her nine brothers and sisters. Alma attended Carter Elementary School and DuSable High School on the south side of Chicago. It was at DuSable that she met Leroy Wyatt Edgerton, who was a drum major for the high school band, and she was a majorette. They married, lived in Chicago, Illinois and Gary, Indiana and had three daughters—Carmelita, Michelle and Camille.
Alma dedicated her life to being a loving Mother who excelled at motherhood and was the foundation of the family—whether it was supporting Carmelita through college; or encouraging Michelle to pursue a career in business or Camille to dedicate her life to social justice. She was our cheerleader and supporter.
Alma was employed by the University of Chicago’s Comptroller’s Office in the Payroll Department. Later, she met and married, the love of her life, George W. Samuels, who predeceased her in June, 1986. After his passing, Alma retired and relocated to Bloomington, Illinois in 1988. She volunteered at the Bloomington Daycare Center and joined First Christian Church. Alma loved tropical fish and enjoyed country line dancing, baton twirling, sewing, ceramics, and reading.
